In lieu of this week's question of the week, I have a possible rule change for 2017 that I want all of you to give me feedback whether we should make this change or not. I've ran this past the Player's Council already and heard their views on it and now I will ask to hear all of your opinions on it. This will be the first of possibly several rule proposals for 2017.
2017 Rule Proposal #1:
At the start of 2017, you will receive 2 "saves". If you are absent for a race, your first save will be used and you will receive as many points as 75% of the last place score. Meaning, if the last place finisher in that race scored 12 points, you will receive 9 points as compensation. For your second absence, your second save will be used and you'll receive half as many points as the last place score. So if the last place finisher in that race scored 12 points, you will receive 6 points as compensation.
Once your 2 saves are used, you will be given a warning and you will lose Chase eligibility after your 3rd absence. From your 3rd absence and any future absence in that season, no points will be given for compensation. This rule would replace the current rule of 0 points for an absence and 3 consecutive absences resulting in loss of Chase eligibility.
Saves can only be used during the first half of the season (first 18 races for Cup, 16 for Xfinity, 11 for Trucks). We want to put emphasis on the race to the Chase and the Chase itself and want to avoid the case of someone moving on due to points received from a save. The rule in the Chase will remain where you need to win AND participate in all 3 races in the round in order to lock yourself into the next round of the Chase. If you miss a race in the Chase, you must advance by points in the round where you missed. And it is also for this reason that saves will not be allowed during the Chase.
If the last place finisher scores 2 points, absent players in that race with at least one save will receive 1 point regardless if it is their first or second save. If the last place finisher scores 0 points and is given the 1 bonus point for participation, then absent players will "waste" a save since they would lose a save and get 0 points. If a player regularly scores 0 points and causes saves to be wasted, then that would be dealt with individually should that become a problem.
This rule proposal is made in result to the increasing number of absences in all 3 series as well as absences due to website crashes and real-world responsibilities.
The Player's Council voted 4 in favor, 1 not in favor, and 1 seeking improvement before approval. But my vote is the one that matters as my vote decides whether this rule will be implemented in 2017. My vote will be based on the feedback I receive from the Player's Council and the entire league.
Dodge (#89) is in jeopardy of missing his 3rd consecutive Cup race, which could make him the 3rd winner to go inactive.
During the first half of the Combat Wounded Coalition 400, he lead changed hands between 5 different players. In face, Numbah10hatah (#38) was the only player to lead that has already won a race this year. But from the halfway point onward, Jakub Smetana (#42) was putting the rest of the field to shame. Others may have tied him for the lead, but he consistently held that top spot. He had some competiton with 2015 champ Kevin20fan (#20) who was up front all day long and led late. But Mile501 (#21) methodically moved his way up through the field, just moving up one or two positions each update, and he took the checkered flag for his first win in 2016! While Jakub Smetana didn't win the race, he did win his 2nd Dash4Champs bonus and claims a Chase spot. There are no more Cup Dash4Champs races in 2016. Final results, awards, and points below:
