FDA investigating 5 Hour Energy after 13 reported deaths

There probably would have been 14 had Bowyer been able to gain access to Gordon's hauler.

Not to trivialize the actual deaths if they indeed were a result of the energy drink but probably like the recent announcement about energy drinks, these people probably already had some sort of health issues.

You're right but there's a lot of people who are walking time bombs not knowing they have a medical issue.
My brother, 32 years on the local PD, retired as a LT. Passed all the physicals with flying colors. Quit smoking and drinking when he was 30. Exercised regularly, ran 5 and 10k marathons. He was pouring himself a cup of coffee one morning and was dead before he hit the floor. Brain aneurysm. 52 years old.

Sorry to hear about your brother, SST. My sister suffered a similar fate at the age of 39.

But before blaming 5-Hour, one must know how much of the stuff that the victims were consuming before coming to any conclusions regarding the safety of the product.

There's a story of a guy who developed lung cancer from microwave popcorn and got a judgement of over $7M. But this guy ate 2 bags per day for 10 years straight. Was it the fault of the popcorn or the fault of the consumer?

Everything in moderation, I suppose...

The EU has strick labeling laws for energy drinks.

Remember Brian Vickers blood clot? Remember who his sponsor was? There's a few reports that 1 can of RB makes a persons blood 'sticky' and may lead to clots.

First Monster now 5 hour. I don't have the energy to keep up with all this.
Here you go :D

Gotta love America. A bunch of people who drink a product that they shouldn't drink since they have heart problems end up suffering complications and their families whine to the government. I'm tired of this Nanny State mentality. Natural selection at it's absolute very finest.

If they regulate energy drinks and I have to pay more for them because of stupid people being too stupid, I'm going to be pissed.

"The agency is under extra pressure after the parents of a 14-year-old Maryland girl sued the company that makes Monster Energy Drink last month, saying caffeine in the drinks killed her. The autopsy report attributed her death to “cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity.”

That's what you get for using SST as your news source.

"Anais had consumed two 24-oz. Monster Energy drinks in a 24-hour period, the last drink just hours prior to her death,” her lawyer, Kevin Goldberg of Silver Spring, Md., said in a statement."

That's 48 ounces... that's A LOT to consume for anyone. Also, I'm betting she consumed them both at once.

Regardless, this is the only case that's been reported where someone didn't have a heart problem prior to consuming these beverages. Are you really saying we should regulate a product because of one odd case?

But, seriously, we're having a national knee jerk reaction to 13 deaths in four years? Hot dogs cause more deaths per year.

Thats horrible SST. RIP.

And RIP to all the others as well.

I am disappoint, It didn't work on Steven Wallace.

Just as long as you understand that it isn't always as SST said.

I don't see any 'knee jerk' reaction by the FDA. They have to look into it because some people actually like having the facts before they decide. Europe did, and they found even more cause for concern.

It takes like 5,000-10,000 mg. of caffeine in one day to kill a normal, healthy person. In other words, you'd have to drink 25+ cans of Full Throttle in one serving to legitimately die from caffeine intoxication. I'm betting that even that 14 year-old girl had health problems that aren't being disclosed.

You are mostly correct. 10,000 mg or 10 grams of caffeine causes caffeine toxicity, not intoxication. a cup of coffee contains about 80 milligrams of caffeine. Caffeine simulates the effects of Theophylline and both cause cardiac dysrhythmias.

Ok, I'll call the FDA and tell them to forget the whole thing.

They need to look into it, partly because these drinks have a lot more than just caffeine and nobody knows how they interact.

More people die from eating unregulated McFatty burgers than energy drinks.

but at least we think we know what the burgers are made of and what it does to our bodies. lol.

I honestly don't think a 14 year old girl should be drinking energy drinks. Her parents should be the ones responsible not Monster. Seriously how does a parent let their 14 year old daughter drink 2 24oz Monsters in one day?? My daughter is 5 and isn't even allowed to drink soda. My mom is addicted to caffeine and soda, and she has passed it down to me. I don't drink alcohol or smoke, but I do drink too many sodas a day. That is something I don't want to pass to my daughter. So I will wait until she is older, and then if she wants a soda it will be in moderation. Energy drinks though? Nope, probably not until she is 18. lol.

As a stupid person , I take offence at that.

This is America. Land of not having to accept responsibility for your actions.

Whatever happened to a simple cup of coffee for a little shot of energy at 3:00?

Used to do that at night when traveling just to stay awake. Only problem is, I stopped for the coffee when I was already tired. I'd have to wait a half hour just to drink the unbelievably hot java. That's when I started with the energy drinks. Drink it right away and they act quick. Good stuff IMO.

I drop a piece or two of ice in my coffee when I need a quick fix. Tried energy drinks, make me jittery, also fatter from the super load of calories.

The lawsuit says that Monster does nothing to warn you of dangers of over consumption or caffeine. They sure do, pretty sure 14 still qualifies for "CHILDREN"

It also says she, a 14 year old drank a 24oz can in the evening then one the next afternoon. My question is why the hell was your 14 year old daughter up all night? And what did she have between the 2 24oz cans to drink?

I drink mine as hot as it can be as I don't care for it when it starts to cool down. I remember my old man used to set a cup of black tea by the bed every night and drink it cold in the morning before he got up....ugh.

Too each their own, right?:)

Andy, what's your cholesterol? Blood pressure? Do you know? You know for certain all your internal plumbing is in A #1, Tip Top shape? Absolutely positive you don't have a 'weak' spot just begging to burst, a aneurism, or that your heart goes "wonky" under certain conditions, IOW a cardiac arrhythmia.

You're a young guy, why do you need a energy drink? Eat 3 squares and get 8 hours sleep and you don't need a energy drink.

No one needs them but the marketing machine for Red Bull is one of the best I've ever seen.

True enough, we all like it our own way. Cold coffee is not for me but I guess I'm used to the coffee that comes from my pot at home. I don't think it's anywhere near the temps that it seems to be when I stop when traveling.

Check this out..... Our local small town store has the 5-Hour energy drink sitting on the shelf as you check out. Right next to it is another small bottle energy drink, I think called 6 Hour Power. The 6-Hour Power is about 50 cents more than the 5-Hour energy drink. Normally the 6-Hour Power drink is almost always sold out. What makes a person decide to spend an extra 50 cents on that additional hour? I'm seriously contemplating creating my own 7-Hour Max Energy Boost, raising the price an additional 50 cents on top of that and sit back and rake in the bucks. Who's with me? :D
