I have always wanted to go to a Nascar Cup race, never had the chance until now.

I am looking at going to the Pocono 400 on June 10th.

Is there any advice anyone can provide me with as a newbie? Any particular area of the track to sit at, and any to stay away from? Is there a specific type of ticket I should buy? Also how difficult is it to perhaps take pictures with the cars and maybe even meet a driver or two? Or will I need specific tickets to do this?

Thanks!

I,m older so I always sit in a section with chair backs and real arm rests and if its a day race I sit up high under an over hang. These seats are much more expensive but to me its necessary and part of having a good time. Also they usually go quicker so you have to buy earlier. If you are young, sit medium high on a bench seat in the middle of the party. Its cheaper there too. They have some of the cars near the merchandise trailers in front of the speedway outside the gates but if you want you can get a pit pass for before the race.

Go to www.poconoraceway.com and there you can find tickets for a Pit/Paddock Pass which is good for the weekend for $50. You can read what it includes, but it doesn't include the garage area. To get there, you have to go through NASCAR or with a sponsored group. Personally, I prefer sitting between the last turn and the start/finish line, but some people love to sit where they can see the cars coming out of the pits. At Pocono, it really doesn't matter because all the seating is on the front stretch. You will want to rent a scanner and there will be more than one place where you can rent one. Get there early so you can mill around the souvenir trailers and if you get a pit pass as well. Sun screen is a must and be prepared to stand while the green flag is out. They don't call them stands for nothing. Again, you can get all kinds of info at the Pocono web site. Good luck and have fun.

Sit up high and get a good view of the entire track. Take some binoculars too. Also, if possible, take your bicycle. My son and I take our bikes to MIS and it saves us a tremendous amount of time and energy getting around the facility. It also allows the luxury of being able to make repeat trips back to the vehicle to drop off merch and get drinks or snacks. We chain our bikes to the fence near the grandstand exit and it helps us quickly get to our car after green flag and beat the traffic.

Read the track fan guide regarding coolers.

Also a tip, put your ice and beverages/food inside a small trash bag before you put it in your soft side cooler. It will keep it from leaking on you and your fellow race fans.

And again, sunscreen. Do not skimp on sunscreen and re apply every 2 hours. Don't forget to put some on your ears.

One of the most important things is to try and take some time to relax and soak it all in. Take a few deep breaths from time to time and just enjoy the fact that you are at a Cup race. Take a look around at everything. And if you enjoy people watching you will find that NASCAR events offer the best people watching on earth.:)

Like others have said make sure you sit high and bring binoculars.

Also you didn't ask this and no one mentioned it but Pocono has some of the absolute worst traffic since there is basically only one road in and out of the place.

So I highly suggest bringing chairs and food for tailgating after the race, this way you can sit and relax while everyone else fights the traffic and then in about 90 minutes to 2 hrs after the race you can cruise on out of there.

Pocono. Arrive early and plan on staying a long, long time afterward. Especially if you are heading north to I-80 to make your way home. Bring a small grill and sit back and relax after the event back at your vehicle. Let the rookies leave the track early to get a jump on the traffic. They're also the ones that you see sitting in their cars long after the event, waiting in line to head home. You'll have a far better time and probably get quite a few laughs at their expense while road-rage rules.

Freeze some 8oz water bottles the night before the event and use those in your walk in cooler. You never have to worry about a wet cooler a$$ on your way out of the track. Plus, when you run out of adult beverages, it's a great way to finish off your days hydration.

If money is any issue at all, pack whatever snacks you want and save yourself lots of $'s over the course of a day @ the track.

Borrow a scanner or rent one at the track. People seem to like the NASCAR Fan Scan item that the rent at the tracks. Personally, I like the basic scanner when I'm sitting in the stands. I'd rather watch the race than some little television screen that tells me who is fast. I can see that for myself when I watch the event unfold in front of me. They have large portable TV screens in the infield for any replays you may want to see.

Bring some tailgating games for the parking lot. Table. Cards. Music.

Make friends with your neighbors. I've made lifelong friends at some of these events. There are a bunch of good people that attend these races. Besides, that neighbor may be me and I always bring lots of extra beer. :D

Seating. The higher the better at Pocono. It is a long way from those main grandstands on the front stretch over to the tunnel turn. Binocular's, like what was previously mentioned, are a plus. If you sit low, the view of the track between turn's one and two are obstructed by the infield RV's. Spend the extra bucks and move up. Also, many don't take advantage of it but Pocono offers ticket insurance, as most all tracks do. For a couple extra bucks you can get reimbursed for your tickets and more should the event have to be cancelled and run on another day. That is if you are required to be back at work on the day that they run the race. It's worth the peace of mind IMO. Pocono Ticket Insurance info can be found here.

Overall, relax. Don't be in a hurry. You'll have a great experience.

First , welcome to the forum Paradigm , hope you will be back after the race to give us your thoughts . Pocono is a great track , situated in some of the prettiest ski / cottage country in the world . Like they said , plan to leave for the track and get there as early as you can ,at least by 10.00 am , much earlier if you plan to try and access the pit area . There is plenty to see and do before the race . Sit as high as you can , it is a big track and you will want to see accross to the other side of it . I don't think there are any bad seats. Bring the binoculars and tape the race at home so you don't have to worry about missing anything .

Paridigm, Welcome! We all hope that you share pictures of your adventure!
There are some basic things that apply to attending any race event.
Check the track website to see what is allowed inside. Weapons, umberallas, alcoholic beverages, hard-sided coolers, glass bottles and the like may be prohibited inside the gates.
Always write down your parking location - or take a picture of the closest landmark after parking.
You might want to take a small backpack if you are planning on buying lots of DIGGER gear.
Comfortable Shoes
Sunglasses
Sunscreen
Aspirin
Windbreaker
Ear Protection
Sense of Humor
Binoculars
Cash
Patience
More Cash
Refreshments
Camera
Scanner or Race View (really pretty cool to rent)
Prescription Medications - as needed cause it will be a long day!

And remember to take your race tickets with you!!

Enjoy!

Great list in PP but I would add a small poncho to the list.

I have a Kyle Busch seat cushion I will mail to you if needed. :D

LOL Does it have a picture of his face on it?
Cause what could be better than sitting on Pee Wee's face for 4 hours??!

...no Danica jokes, please...

Welcome to the forum.

I have never been to Pocono so the advice of others will be better.

But I prefer small Styrofoam coolers, it ain't PC but just leave it and and you have less gear to carry after the race.
Submarine sandwiches can be kept cool, and eaten anytime of the day.

For a track that size binoculars and radios are a must I prefer the binoculars to be small an easy to carry. If the radios are cost prohibitive at least get an FM radio headset to follow mrn. If your party is a big one it may be too costly to set up everyone with scanners as well, the simple radio sets might work best for the budget . On some occasions we have shared a scanner by using an adapter to feed more than one headset, but that does restrict you to following the same drivers. Again anything that works is better than nothing.

I like getting there early and mapping out a good exit. If that means tipping the parking attendant I have in the past to get a desired spot. Parking near good exit perimeters also allows for more people watching if that matters to you.

I prefer taking almost all photos prior to the race, and just enjoying the race after the green drops.

Also remember to paint your doors black on Thursday, and letter them up with the white threes on Friday to allow for drying prior, If the aroma of the paint is desired then go with the silver for the most punch. Exotic Russian brands of silver are best, they ain't afraid of a little led.

Wear your old Earnhardt cap slightly off center and look a little psycho to be most credible

Laughing Out Loud - cause this is soooo true!
Well-played, Greg!

Definitely bring sunscreen. I got a minor sunburn during the Nationwide race at Bristol in March. Also, plan on doing A LOT of walking depending on where you park.

Don't plan on seeing the cars on the part of the track furthest from you very well (if at all). At the two 1.5 mile tracks I've been to (Texas and Charlotte; both smaller than Pocono), the cars on the part of the track furthest from me can be a little hard to see. The higher up you sit, the further out you can see.

You guys are awesome, thanks a lot for the replies.

Can anyone suggest a good area to stay in? I was thinking of staying in either Scranton or Stroudsburg

Also in terms of buying the paddock pass, I noticed general admission is required as well. Which day would be better to see the cars in the paddock - friday or saturday? I assume on friday there won't be much happening as compared to saturday with the ARCA race as well as the cup qualifiying?

I would just call the ticket office and ask about pricing and pit passes. The reps are likely to be very helpful and will work with you to get you a seat on an aisle or more up on the high rows.

Furthermore, do I need to stay seated in the grandstands, or can I use my paddock pass during the race to stand around in the paddock? Also can I roam the infield and other areas of the track during the race?

How about pissing on it?

Well, I did an event at a Wal-Mart in Concord area last week. There were several show cars there and hero cards to go along with most of them.

Before loading up my car on the trailer, I decided to use the rest room and had seen this when I stepped up to the urinal.

I swear, I wasn't the one to do it.

...sure...

Pretty funny in a sick sort of way!

Check the track website.
As a rule, the paddock and pits are closed to the general public during a race.
Infield access is another issue and the policy changes from track to track.

Absolutely freakin perfect. Sure you did it.

Nah, not me.

I was never one to throw stuff in urinals or write on the walls.

After cleaning toilets and whatever in the military, I wouldn't wish that job on anyone.

That's just wrong. He belongs in the crapper. ;)

Well I went to the race and really loved it. I have been to an F1 Race (Montreal), IRL (Toronto) and now NASCAR, and this was by far my favourite (although I normally only watch NASCAR on TV and not the other two).

The sound of these machines are unreal. Overall it was an amazing experience, and my only regret was not purchasing the pit/paddock pass. I plan to go to either Michigan or Watkins Glen in August for another Cup race, where I will definitely get the pit pass.

Thanks for sharing these, Paradigm.

Why do I always think of a fish when I see Jack wearing that puss, and is Gordon sporting a mini Mullet?

Great photos, PD! I am also happy that you had fun!

Was there anything we missed with all of the suggestions we gave you?
Was there one suggestion that you think was best?

Thanks for sharing!

Why do I always think of a fish when I see Jack wearing that puss...

He always looks like he just ate a bad Rocky Mountain Oyster!
