Going back to one race per track besides Daytona, Talladega, Martinsville, Bristol would really help some of these tracks. For some reason Talladega still knows how to get people to show up pretty well.

When you hype everything including a driver passing gas, after awhile there is nothing to get excited about.

Talladega is one of Nascar's better attended races but perspective is definitely needed in this case. Talladega used to have 148,000 seats that sold out and now has 78,000 or it may even be less now. 78K is a great crowd......148K is an insanely large crowd.

run more road coursees and short track and cut back on the mile and halfs track that would help alot and the racing would be much better.

Get another Earnhardt...outside of that maybe Jr’s legion of fans go to Chase place was pretty loud when he took the lead today

Yea the backstretch seats are gone correct?

I got it... two words: Talladega Roval.

I've never attended at race at Talladega but relative to other tracks I've been to recently (Pocono, Michigan, Kentucky) there still seems to be a helluva lot more than 78k seats. I know they eliminated the backstretch and some seats out of turn 4 but in the grand scheme of things that wasn't a lot. Did they widen the seats to cut down capacity that way? Maybe I'm missing something but next to Indy and Bristol 'Dega seems to have the 3rd most seats still. Even more than Daytona.

I got my seating info from Jayski as it shows the former capacity of several tracks and what it is now.

Was nice to see what appeared to be close to a full house yesterday. Well, with the exception of the member that posted in the pre-race yesterday that they weren't going to take the 2 hour drive because of the threat of rain. That reminds me, where's this weeks bonehead thread?

I know for a lot of us here short tracks are nirvana but when you look at tracks like Daytona (even excluding the 500) and Talladega they do exceptionally well in attendance and TV ratings. The Talladega chase race will be the second or third most watched race of the last 10 and will have the largest attendance by far. Give the people what they want.

Yeah, fans do tune in at home for this event, or so they have..... Haven't seen numbers from yesterday yet. Butts in the seats are a different story. I think yesterday's success in that area rode the shoulders of DE Jr. He's not coming back. Will the fans? IDK

I hope the fans keep returning as I am used to seeing lots of unsold seats at Richmond, Dover and MIS but seeing Charlotte and Bristol with empty seats is jarring to me and I would feel that way about Talladega too. I don't mind the empty seats at the second Daytona race as the weather can be iffy and 100K for a race is unrealistic if it isn't the 500, IMO.

We don't attend races with near the frequency that we used to. That's mostly due to other commitments. Well, that and discretionary income. We've got about three more years of other commitments and then we'll start going more again.

That was me pal. Always thought of you as being a little bit above taking a swipe at someone, looks like I was wrong about that too.

dpk is a stand up guy and I am sure he meant no harm in what he said. Now if someone like me, aunty or SOI said it I would be angry...........:D

The spring race attendance was nowhere near what it was yesterday. Seems that way with a lot of the tracks that have 2 dates and one being in the playoffs.

Alright all forgiven , y'all are great. Truth be known , it rained at our house, but we needed it.
I was there this spring and last fall, the crowd was much more filled in corner to corner and
toward the fence yesterday.

For the most part Nascar has 2 seasons with the first ending at Memorial Day and second beginning in June. The first part of the season has a lot more viewers from home per race and I suspect attendance is better than ever too but I can't prove it. I am not sure why this is but IMO the racing is better at the beginning as teams have not found ways to circumvent Nascar's rules yet. By the time the last 10 races happen Nascar is gasping for air as the chase races are some of the least watched and in fact the first 3 hovered at the 2 million viewer mark and 1 actually fell below that threshold.

For perspective Nascar only had 3 races in 2010 that fell below the 4 million viewer mark and this year already has around 17 with at least 5 being under the 3 million viewer mark. I am not suggesting people should panic or that Nascar is dying but it is one thing to go bald over a long period of time and quite another to have chunks of hair falling out each week. Nascar is definitely losing viewers in chunks and for me the concern is that they are not fad fans that joined then left the series. These are fans that have been around for a period of time and have decided that the series is not worth following for them any longer.

Some folks say the racing has never been better and that viewership is fine as the number of people that watch Nascar is not counted properly. Some people still blame the recession for people not going to the track so there are some interesting theories.

^ the daily summation

There was some great news with the Talladega race as it was a full house and 35% more viewers than last year. The good news about the bad news is that folks can simply ignore it and turn on the tube and tablet like the halcyon days are still upon us.

before noon^^

Be nice as I included some counter thoughts of yours such as Nascar viewers are not being counted properly and the racing has never been better. I might as well add in that you think Nascar doesn't have an old audience and is positioning itself for the future too. Cheers!

If only there were a silver bullet to fix it all, from NASCAR TO Indy, to the local level. Crowds and car counts have been declining for years at all levels. Partly because America's love for the automobile has someone fallen away, partly because (and I'll probably get beaten up for this) the level of dangers has all but disappeared, partly because of a million other reasons.

Are more people going to tune in from home to see a tightrope walker walk 3 feet off the ground with a safety net under him or walk between 2 skyscrapers with nothing but 38 floors and the ground beneath him? Why was Evel Knievel so popular and why do people always gravitate to daredevils?
