Ok, i've got to put my 2 cents in....... like anybody cares lol. As far as Dale, I think it's sad, but true..... if he was a short track racer around the carolina's now, I don't know if he would be given the opurtunity to come to NASCAR. Think of advertising back when he came along...... there was VERY little NASCAR in the main stream. The ads were only in mags and shows aimed at race fans. THere was a time, believe it or not, when you could go to the grocery store and not even see a driver on a box of anything........ That space was still revered for stick and ball sports. As for Dale, he came along before drivers were spokesman, rolemodels, and plastered all over billboards. When he drove for Osterlund, it was a good car, with minimum sponsorship..... Mike curb and Lowes were on the car periodically..... but it was a good car.... case in point, Pearson won in it at the Southern 500...... When Dale did get corprate America lookin, it was the ideal promotion..... Wrangler, one tough customer. He looked the part, and didn't have to speak..... he just had to pose at the lake, in a deer stand, places he was at home in, in Wranglers and a Stetson hat. By the time Goodwrench came along, they had 2 campaigns goin...... the one geared towards racefans- Dale and Mike Eddy in ASA, were again perfect.... they were "tuff ole men".... but then they could advertise their ASE certified, professional service to main stream America...... By the 90's, NASCAR exploded....... advertisers had more pull. Case in point- Alan Kulwiki..... after his death, he had said before if somehtin happened to him, he wanted Rick Mast to be his driver......... Hooter's decided Mast didn't fir their image...... ( middle aged, rough around the edges, kinda guy...... guess they hadn't been INSIDE one of their stores....lol) and they dropped the team in favor of a more "image friendly" driver, Loy Allen Jr.... ( and we know how THAT one turned out.....) I know in the early 90's, one of the best drivers in this area, never made it, due no large part to his name, Robbie Faggert..... he killed 'em in the Sportsman class back in the day, but wasn't very..... well...... the name hurts.....lol
there is no doubt, I've seen many in the last few years around here, there are MANY drivers with as much or talent than what we see in NASCAR today....but will never get the chance. Used to be, there was a time when drivers came first, how to use them ( other than results) came second. Every now and then, a driver like a Gordon, Johnson, or Edwards comes along, but how many McMurray's, Mike Waltrips, and the likes fill cars because of their looks, image, and sponsor friendly ways keep them in NASCAR.........
