Get this through my thick head - The slowing of the cars to produce better racing

Slowing the cars down in and of itself is not going to make better racing. But if you make the cars run stock bodies with stock floorboards you will see better racing. Why? Because competitive performance will be mostly in the drivers hands again. There would be no aero push. With less aero efficiency, cars will once again be able to pull out and pass when drafting, instead of pulling out and getting hung out to dry because nobody came with you. This would also make restrictor plates unnecessary so the racing on the big tracks wouldn't come down to a big crash deciding who gets a shot for the win. It is true if they went back to "stock" cars the speeds would indeed be slower, but it would not be the reduction in speed itself that would make the racing better. It will work, But Nascar has to have some faith in the things that brought them to prominence in the first place.

Are you saying keep the same horsepower but remove the aerodynamics ?

I keep advocating to remove the front valence and side skirts to get air under the car. Get them looking like cars and less like vacuum cleaners. The more air under the car, the harder it is to handle, and it is slower because it's not so aerodynamic.
A little less horsepower wouldn't hurt, either.

I thought the racing of the late 70s and 80s was great --- and the cars were at least 20mph slower.

And, NO, Kevin, I am NOT advocating restrictor plates. Horsepower can be reduced by other means.

To an extent this would be a good idea, however I think keeping the cars looking like they are right now is fine. If you look at the racing since Feb it has gotten steadily better as the crews figure out how to get the best performance out of the new Gen.6 cars. Lets not forget we haven't even had a full season yet with the new cars, I think some people expect way too much , way too quickly. The only thing I would advocate would be to get rid of the plates, smaller crate motor at Daytona and Dega, with regular cooling system , full spoiler, and let them race. Throttle response has always been key at the plate tracks. I've been saying this for years, ever since they put the damn things on these cars. Let them do 205-210 in the draft as long as they can get away from each other!

Hopefully NASCAR will get Goodyear to just start making tires that wear more. The talks about bringing down the HP should turn into making them harder to handle instead. If NASCAR is actually discussing it and its not all media, I would think talking to Goodyear would be the cheapest, fastest and best route to fix that problem. Or just start throwing some gravel out on the track lol that'll wear the tires down quicker.
Hmmm seems we had those tires that wore more not too long ago....how did that work out?

So you are saying make them more like the V-8 Supercar series?

I was thinkin the same thing. Seems like the argument goes back and forth each week softer tires one week harder tires the next . Maybe Nascar does know what they are doing after all.;)

Yes, keep the horsepower. The key to all this is to make the cars punch a larger hole in the air. That way when you try to pass, the cars are not as aero sensitive so you can hold your line, and you have enough power to complete the pass whether or not someone comes with you. Smaller displacement engines would be fine if you just wanted to slow the cars down, but with the current aero package pulling out to pass would be a direct to the rear move unless half the field came with you. As for the V-8 Supercars, I like to think they followed the same basic idea that Nascar had been using for years. So I would have to say yes, make them more like the Supercars and the World Rally cars. It is true that the racing has gotten better as the year has progressed. I think that the Eldora race shows that cars (or trucks) that are less dependent on aerodynamics make for better racing. I have been saying for years that a return to dirt tracks would be a positive step in reviving some of the things that made me a Nascar fan in the first place. I also think that going back to stock bodies and floorboards would be another step in that direction. Anything that demonstrates which drivers have the more well rounded skills is a positive thing when trying to determine a champion for any racing series. It's not the perfect solution, but I believe it would help. Just my humble opinion folks.

I don't understand the rear windows question? If you help me out with a little more info, I'll try to answer it. I may not have an answer, but I will do the best I can. I think part of the problem with slowing down the cars is that will make races longer. Nascar and the broadcasters are working together to try to keep broadcast times at three to three and a half hours. (Roughly the same as Baseball, Football, etc.) I think this is why they are trying everything else first. The networks are not happy when races go past three and a half hours. (Not including rain delays.) Nascar's first priority is to keep the races on TV. Their second is to give fans the best racing they can. Again this is just my opinion and the margin of error is +/- 100%.

Sorry , off topic , another board member contends that removing the rear window would help the racing .He can explain it better than me . Great thoughts that you have though . My fear in removing downforce from the cars is simply that they would have no grip . Something like racing on ice. It may slow down the racing with wrecks and spins.

If I got this wrong I'm sure some one here will correct me, removing the rear window will disrupt the air flow over the back of the car I believe thus altering the aero and the handling.

You two are poking a sleeping tiger. :D

Ted@economy thanks for reminding me I am getting off topic. When I get started on one of my rants I get carried away. The rear window issue, if I understand it correctly, would be a bit too much downforce reduction. It could also be a problem if the cars get turned around. Just my opinion for what it's worth. Anyway back to the OP's question\request. I don't think just slowing down the cars will make the racing any better. I do think that some things they could do to make the racing better would slow the cars down. Now that I have done my best to confuse the issue even more, my work here is done.:D Have a safe run to the checkered everyone.
