So much discussion following the Daytona “miracle” for Burton, which shows Nascar’s “win and you’re in” system is a disaster. My ideas are posted below and let’s hear yours. These should be based on retaining the “playoffs” as NASCAR will likely never go back to a pure points system. In my suggestion the regular season champion earns a huge deserving bonus:

Regular season: No more “win and you’re in”. Maintain current points schedule for finishing and stage wins, but race winner a large bonus in points. How much? Whatever makes sense to make it significant. Let’s say 25 points via a poster’s recommendation in another thread.

REGULAR SEASON CHAMPION: Make this mean something. The regular season champion is automatically in the CHAMPIONSHIP RACE as one of 4 drivers.

Playoffs: Maintain the same format as current “win and advance” including the bonus points for winning. While they are not relevant to advancing in the first 6 races they could play a big part in the final 3. Championship race remains as currently done.

Those are my ideas…let’s hear yours!
 
I would go back to the Latford point system or a slightly modified version of it. 5 points for leading a lap and 5 for leading the most laps. No win & your in. The driver that had accumulated the most points after the last race of the season would be the champion.

You don’t need to tell me that a system like this will never be implemented as I realize it. NASCAR & the networks have decided that manipulating racing and adding gimmicks are the best course to take. It’s their ball and bat so they can do as they please.

I guess if a person has their head stuck far up their ass it does. They should just give out participation trophy's before the "final four" lottery race.
 
I agree that the regular season champion being locked into the final at Phoenix is a good idea. That would make the regular season, especially as it builds through August, really really competitive among the fastest cars in the field.
 
Every other sport I can think of wants to speed up the games and make the rules more simple for fans to understand. Start with that: I don't even need or want to propose anything. NASCAR is who is in charge, they have the huge TV contract, they're the one entity who for certain is not in any economic straits or challenges. If they want to continue going the route of making things more complex and difficult to follow while also ensuring that events can go on for hours and hours and hours to complete the last 10 laps because that somehow brings value to their sponsors, tell me that. Explain it to me like an adult (do it through a sports business journal; I don't care) and then I can decide how I feel about caring. I am just a customer, but I'm also a customer and I'm allowed to make purchasing decisions when it comes to my entertainment money and time.

However there's no way the playoff system is junked. Too much money from TV and probably sponsors of NASCAR/Teams to change this. If we're going to do a playoff format I think they should just eliminate eliminations. Cut the field to top 10, with two wild cards making it 12. Run a 10 race mini season for the title, scoring points the way they do in the regular, except playoff points become "bonus" points. Add a bonus points for leading a lap, and 1 bonus point for leading the most laps.

For example, max points is normally 60. However, in the playoffs, they'd get an additional 5 "playoff bonus points" for winning, then 2 more points for the stage wins, and then leading the most laps grants 1 more. Max points becomes 68.
 
I'm pretty much sensing from the answers that most fans want simpler, not more complicated and gimmicky. I think they have reached a tipping point. fans are tired of it. We don't need stick and ball "tournaments" every time you turn around. There are more on the way. It's getting even more ridiculous. As it is with the "win and you are in" the damn thing starts at Daytona.
Next year there will be a tournament within another tournament. Give me a break.

I can't get on board with an automatic placement into the final four for the champion as that would mean they would basically use all other playoff races as a testing process and throw caution to the wind and no incentive to run competitively.

Years back when NASCAR changed the race back to the flag rule and then later added the OT rules at first it seemed like a good idea. However, recently I have come to despise this OT process and the invariable late race caution that creates OT. That's probably my biggest gripe with the racing these days. I think I would now prefer to just run the advertised distance.

How could they possibly change this farcical "final four" without throwing out the whole mess and starting over. I know I don't want to wait all season to see a fudged up point system "crown" a champion with a one in four chance lotto of being one? that is a serious sleight on what a champion is supposed to be. A game show contest isn't it, I know that much.

what about their regular season champion? More band aids I suppose. I'll tell ya what, why don't they get rid of the whole mess and let us watch a run build all season for the championship using a decent no gimmick point system that we can all follow. Like every other racing series does?
 
Let's be intelligent enough to realize that some drivers don't wreck much but get decent points, good enough to be in the running at the end of the season without losing our **** because they can race, but they don't WIN enough so we don't have this kill em all to win no matter what B.S.
 
This conversation is a product of the “worst case scenario” we just witnessed, and it was inevitable; Burton was dead last among full time drivers in points, but gets IN with his win. Happy for him, and for the Wood brothers, absolutely. Does he deserve to be in the “playoffs”? Nope. That’s why, for me, using points only to get to a regular season champ, then shifting to playoff mode with the “win and advance” method gives good balance.

Yeah Blaney and his 6 race good performance was a worthy champion. Ryan Newman was one position away from a championship with 0 wins and 5 top 5 finishes…

Shhh, don't pull the wool off of their eyes. They think Blaney was a legitimate champion and they think after they fudged up the points to eliminate the Newman effect it was ok, and wait Jimmie losing a wheel bearing and being eliminated caused more fudging it up to make it all "legitimate" and no, Dillion won but he wasn't in, but last place Burton did and he is in. I'm exhausted, but this my friends is legit. Harvick is in there somewhere.
 
A championship that is decided using a fixed set of rules that every competitor knows beforehand is legitimate. The racers race according to the incentives set before them.

You don’t get to act like a baby and throw a hissy fit because you don’t like the format. Is the format perfect? No but I recognize all champions as legitimate.
 
The winner of the playoffs gets the NASCAR championship and the trophy. The driver with the most points from the normal points system is the driver's champion.

pure and utter nonsense. Driver with the most points for the normal points system isn't the drivers champion because teams dont execute races to accumulate points, therefore the full season points format in today's day and age does not reflect the utterly meaningless "championship season" the old format does. There's just no possible way to actually know who the "worthy champion" is because teams dont approach seasons like that anymore.

I don't love the playoffs. But the chase system we had from 2004-2013 utterly annihilates the full season format as far as I'm concerned.

The sport has never had a more deserving champion than the ones the chase gave us.

Cut it back to 12 drivers (I always thought 16 was too many), reduce the playoffs by one race from 10 to 9, and have three 3-race rounds of 12, 8, and 4 drivers. This would greatly reduce the chance of a fluke winner getting into the playoffs, and three races for the championship instead of one would make the championship feel more legitimate.
