Grand Prix: "The Killer Years" an excellent documentary tragedies of 60s & 70s

Everytime I see a photo of Nina Rindt I think about her losing Jochen.

Those were some ugly cars. The front looks like a snow plow.
True but man the old in car camara stuff was out of this world wonderful. I was young enough to see the drivers as gods.
The cars were a beast and a piece of art all at once.
Just watching the analog of an rpm gauge working was a mesmerizing thing. It was one of the best things about being a boy that just knew enough to know was great. It was the It that filled the imagination....
It was glorious

That's just how they were at the time. I thought the cars were interesting because no one knew what they were doing, they all looked different and you could easily tell them all apart. All of the 2014-2001 cars were horrible, hacked up and cobbled together things, with the barge boards and little wolly bobbles tacked on all over them. The 2022 cars were much, much better looking, though they all sort of eventually morphed into the same Red Bullesque kind of things. Having said that the previously hideous halo sort of looks right on the new cars. That or we just got used to seeing them.

I found the early 70s era cars most interesting of all because everyone seemed to have a different solution, and it was the same with Indycars. The snowplow noses started to disappear as teams moved to ground effects in the late 70s, and since, once again, no one knew what they were doing, everyone had something different. However, in 81-82 or so, the cars all started to look roughly the same. Them the changed the rules and the whole process started over again.

Mostly the 70s were defined by the men. About 1/4 of the starting grid from Kyalami 1971 were dead before the season was over. Some died in F1 and others, like Rodriguez died in sportscars. It was a great sport with horrible consequences. As much as we hate the constant emasculation of the things, I think we're far better off now.
