in your opion who is the greatest driver ever?

In any sport

NASCAR, Truck, Indy,

whatever

so who do u think???

A.J. Foyt. First 4 time Indy 500 winner, something like 12 different Championships over his career, Daytona 500 winner, LeMans winner and I'm not sure that anyone, including A.J. know for sure how many individual races he's won.

There aren't too many drivers in the history of the sport who have a win record that even comes close to his. If it's got wheels, I think A.J. has raced it and if he's raced it, chances are pretty doggone good that he's won in it.

Anybody here remember Jimmy Clark?
He was pretty competitive in whatever he drove as well.

Richard petty 200 wins 7 championships pretty impressive

Have to say Petty and Andretti.

You've got to have the winning edge for an entire career, in my opinion....

Jeff Gordon certainly is getting up there but needs 10-15 more years to be the 'greatest'...

Gotta go with Richard Petty and John Force.
Will NEVER go with Ayrton Senna. His antics race after race were
specifically intended to take out Nigel Mansell. Can't abide Ayrton for those actions.
I watched all those races, because Nigel was my fav.

im not saying this cause hes my dad, but he has one well over 1000 races, in dif types or races, he has raced AJ and Schrader, Kinser, Sammy Slindel, ect ect, they just stuck with racing dad did not.

he had Sponsership from Firestone and was geting ready to be put in a indy car but firestone pulled all factory sponsership, i myself cant prove it, just what i have heard....i have tryed to get him to race again but the old man just wont do it...

im not a AJ fan, i have a book that he wrote and i put it down because it was GD this and GD that, i think i counted about 15 cuss words on one page.

David Pearson and Cale yarborough could drive a stock car like nobody's business. Fred Lorenzen and Fireball Roberts weren't too shabby either.

Back in their day, it was hard to find anyone to hold a light to Morgan Shepherd or Jimmy Hensley in Late Model Sportsman (now Busch series) or L.D. Ottinger on dirt.

Dirt drivers, Scott Bloomquist, Jody Ridley, and Freddie Smith are awfully good.

Ritchie Evans was hell in a modified.

USAC, Indy, F1 - I could not possibly care less.

EMP,

No arguements about Richie.

How about Ray Hendrick in the old T&M coupe? Never did win a championship but won just about everything else during his career.

Or Geoff Bodine in the mods as well. I think Geoff still holds the record for the number of wins in a single season in NASCAR. Somewhere around 50 maybe?

Mike Stefanik is not that bad a chauffer either. He only needs one more championship to tie Richie. Of course Mike's are in both the mods and the Busch North series. It's really a shame that Mike is too old to be picked up in either a Busch or Cup ride now. He sure does find the quick way around a race track.

For overall driver I would have to say AJ and Mario and I don't even like Mario that much. Those 2 ran about anything with 4 wheels and won. Dan Gurney might also be another candidate. As far as stock car racing is concerned there are too many to really choose between. Petty and Pearson with their total wins, Cale, DW and Jeff with their multiple champs, but of those three I like Cale the best. I just think that he had the talent to run even with so so equipment and raced for the love of it. Dang how could I forget Dale? Dale and Pearson I think for stockcars were the best overall. Petty was my favorite, but I have to admit that he would probably about 3rd or 4th on my list.

In no particular order, the king, dale sr, mario andretti, and aj foyt

I'm stricken on stock cars, so I'll go with Earnhardt Sr.

Greg Moore was also one helluva talent in my books.

It may be possible to pick the best driver for each category or series of racing, but to pick 1 best driver ever overall, I am not even going to try.

I had the priviledge to see Bodine and Evans head to head many times. One year at Atomic Speedway, I think they swapped the lead like 60 times in a 100 lap race. If either of them ever got completely around the other, it didn't last a whole lap. Awesome display.

I also recall seeing them at either Martinsville or maybe Coburn VA on a paved track, and it was a whale of a show then too.

Geoff Bodine could wheel a modified with anybody. His talent just never seemed to translate to full body stock cars as well as it did in a mod. Well, that and a certain black number 3 making a hobby out of spinning him. :p I swear he had more Levi Garrett paint on that car than Geoff did sometimes.

Oh, that's sooooo right, EMP. ROTFL

Where there was one, you saw the other.

You mean greatest driver? Right now, the European Golden Boy, Michael Schumacher even though I dont watch F1 but I have played Grand Prix Legends and F1 2002 on my computer :D

According to our friends in F1, it would be Michael Schumacher. Winning every race there, having his teammate Rubens Barrichello block for him and in some cases surrender the win to Schumacher, he's on top of the world. There is no way that man can lose a race.

I do wonder though, if he swims in his own money, uses 1000 dollar bills as toilet paper because whatever the NASCAR drivers earn in a year or two, he probably makes in one race. Also, there is no way he can lose, whoever tries to pass him probably gets penalized.

1. Richard Petty
2. David Pearson
3. Cale Yarborough
4. Darrell Waltrip
5. Jeff Gordon

I wonder how he'd do in a stock car...

i dont think he would do very well in one, but thats JMO

This is a REALLY hard one for me cuz I've been following Auto Racing since about 1950.
I do remember being very impressed with Graham Hill and Jimmy Stewart, Danny Sullivan, Bobby Rahal, Mario Andretti, and more in open wheel.
Lots of drivers in stock cars at local Massachusetts ,n Connecticut and NH tracks from my formative years were fantastic for the venue, but their names escape me.
Cup...well, Yarborough, Petty, Earnhardt, and if Jeff Gordon keeps up the good work, he'll make the list too.

I remember that a couple years ago, I think it was the U.S Grand Prix at Indianapolis when that happened. It was on ABC a couple years ago and I believe Barrichello surrendered the win to Schumacher by pulling over, or was it the other way around? I forget but that's not uncommon in F1 for a teammate to do that.

Precisely why I don't think I could ever really get into F1.

Oh, I forgot to post up my list of greats.

It'd go Dale Earnhardt, Al Unser Sr., Richard Petty, Mario Andretti, Rick Mears, A.J Foyt and you can't beat stats of course, Michael Schumacher.

Hell, now that guy can race!

the poll starter said any sport right?

What about Carl Lewis? Michael Johnson, Donovan Bailey, Steve Prefountaine or Jesse Owens, now those guys, hell, they can run.

What about Funny Cide? Or that one horse that won that Kentucky Derby. What about that jockey, who lives in a fiber glass tree?

Hell, at this point, it's safe to say we could even say Emmitt Smith, now that man could sure race em to the end zone back in the day.

Oh wait, Drivers. Whoops, made a mistake there but the jockeys and Ben Hur still count! I demand it be so! :D

Well, they will do what ever Mr. France tells them to do. Thats why jr can do stuff no one else can! haha

But i think he would be like that guy that drove the 43 or was it the 44, (ugh i think he drove both)....anyway he was good in one of the F1 or indy cars....but sucked in a stock car.
