Intense.

From article:

A man with a rifle shot a soldier standing guard at the War Memorial in downtown Ottawa, and witnesses said there were further shots fired on Parliament Hill nearby.

It was not immediately known if there were further injuries.

Alain Merisier. who works at the cafeteria in the Parliament building, told CBC News that said he saw a man in a car at the Centre Block with a long gun.

Witnesses said they then heard shots fired, and there was an unconfirmed report of a person injured outside the Library of Parliamen

Posted in The Podium as well for those who frequent there. Latest I heard was the soldier who was shot was having CPR operated on him. Then the suspect was located, 30 rounds were exchanged from police to shooter, & the shooter got away again. Scary situation.

Hope all you Canucks stay low

Latest I heard was the soldier who was shot was haing CPR operated on him.
Definitely a serious situation but CPR "operated on him"??
CPR, Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is performed on a person, not operated on them.
Know it all snot nosed kid...

It was probably auto correct on his phone. No harm done :)

  • 1 shooter dead, 1 still believed at large in downtown Ottawa.
  • Police searching cars leaving Ottawa trying to go to Quebec.
  • Report of additional shots fired near Chateau Laurier Hotel, east of Parliament Hill.
  • Police going door to door in downtown core; downtown schools in lockdown.
  • All three main party leaders, Harper, Mulcair and Trudeau, reported safe.

My country has gone into shock mode

Canada is on heightened alert Wednesday as shootings in Ottawa prompted tighter security measures across the country.

Most official institutions reported heightened security protocols and were closely monitoring the situation, but none had reported any known threats outside Ottawa.

Some Canadian Forces bases were locked down in response to the shooting, while others were monitoring the situation with heightened security.

Soldiers asked to stop wearing uniform
The Canadian military is asking its military to stop wearing their uniforms outside bases, except for operational reasons. Military personnel in uniform are being asked not to make any stops — not even at gas stations, daycares, schools and elsewhere — while travelling between their base and home.

The Royal Canadian Legion in Windsor told CBC News that the shooting incident has them rethinking the security of poppy sellers this remembrance season.

Airports reported that flights were continuing as usual, but that the situation was being monitored closely.

A spokesperson for the Customs and Immigration Union said the union is seeking more information about the shooting and waiting to hear from the Canada Border Services Agency about any heightened security measures at the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, both of which connect Windsor, Ont., to Detroit.

In Quebec, the National Assembly and Montreal City Hall increased their security measures.

In New Brunswick, the legislature in Fredericton is closed to the public.

The Nova Scotia Legislature was locked down, but daily proceedings continue. In Halifax, families were on edge after hearing news of the shooting, expressing concern about their loved ones in uniform.

In Toronto, police provided extra security at the Ontario Legislature.

I see you have nothing to contribute that pertains to the topic at hand. As usual. I will gladly OPERATE the ignore button now since you have shown the utmost immaturity & creepiness for a man of your age (supposedly). Nobody likes you here anyway. Could only imagine how lonley your real life must be.

I wait for confirmed information. How many times has the news talked about "multiple gunmen" in shootings and there only been one?
The dead gunman was already confirmed earlier this morning  hence my post already in the podium.

Pete Williams on MSNBC just now said it's one single gunman.
Nothing has been confirmed on that matter yet. The investigation is ongoing. Plus its MSNBC... I wouldnt believe a word that network reports.

Whoever the shooter(s) is/are, the Canadian soldier who was shot has died. Confirmed by BBC about 40 minutes ago. No link to ISIS had been found.

It's Pete Williams. If you're doubting his information, because "it's MSNBC", you're a fool.
Everybody on MSNBC are fools. Theres a reason that network has the laughable reputation, even compared to Fox.

Update: Officials have ID'd the shooter as 32 yr old Michael Zehaf-Bibeau.

He is canadian. His name appears twice in monteal's criminal database. He used a double barrell shotgun.

Pete Williams works for NBC News, not MSNBC. And he's the only person who got it right in Boston last year.

A rather important article.

CALGARY - He’s being called a hero for shooting a rampaging gunman dead on Parliament Hill — and it may mark the first time Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers has ever fired a gun in the line of duty.

Click here for live updates on the story

“This the first time in his career that he’s shot anyone,” said Erin, Vickers’ niece.

A retired RCMP officer who once served in Calgary, 58-year-old Vickers is known to most Canadians as the symbol of order at the House of Commons: a grey-haired man in a black hat and robes, often carrying the ceremonial sceptre of Canada over his shoulder.

On Tuesday, Vickers reportedly showed just how serious his role really is, the head of security for Canada’s government killing a gunman who charged into the Centre Block on Parliament Hill.

MORE COVERAGE:

“To all in Ottawa, stay safe & strong. Thank God for Sgt at Arms Kevin Vickers & our Cdn security forces. True heroes…” tweeted Justice Minister Peter MacKay.

Julian Fantino, Canada’s Minister of Veterans Affairs, added his own tweet of gratitude: “I am safe & profoundly grateful to Sgt at Arms Kevin Vickers & our security forces for selfless act of keeping us safe.”

After the shooting, Vickers immediately contacted his family in New Brunswick to tell them he is safe — “I’m doing okay,” he said — but that hasn’t stopped them worrying about the emotional trauma that will follow, having being forced to pull the trigger for the first time.

“We’re always very proud of Kevin, but at this moment we are concerned about him — he had to make a very serious decision today,” said Mary, Vickers’ older sister.

“He’s always a natural leader. He would not have taken this decision lightly, and I can’t stress that enough — but he would always expect of himself to do what he would expect of the men and women under him.”

Raw footage of the Centre Block attack shows officers and guards moving cautiously down the hall before gunfire suddenly erupts, with dozens of shots echoing in the distance.

Various witnesses have credited Vickers with leading the security response and killing the infiltrator, a man who may have been the same cold-blooded murderer who gunned down an unarmed solider outside the national cenotaph moments before.

Anyone who thought Canada’s sergeant-at-arms role was an archaic novelty now understands the man holding the sceptre has a deadly serious job.

“It’s not ceremonial at all, and he has tremendous responsibility — and he wears it well,” said Mary.

In an RCMP career spanning 29 years, Vickers rose up the ranks from a constable in the Northwest Territories to serving 10 years in Alberta and then to chief superintendent in Ottawa.

After retiring from the force, he took the sergeant-at-arms job on Parliament Hill, and was once famously photographed escorting a protestor masquerading as a page from the House of Commons.

His niece Erin says her uncle is a calm, gentle man — but someone who handles pressure with utmost calm.

“He’s a thoughtful and considerate person — he’s halfway to a saint in my opinion,” she said.

“He’s a very capable human being.”

It's worth noting, I think, .... this could have ended very differently, if not for one man with a gun acting in defense.

Good for him. Does he have a habit of reporting info that hasnt been confirmed yet?

For someone who claims to be studying journalism, you sure aren't impartial. Pete Williams is solid. For someone who claims they don't watch Fox "News" or get all their information from Conservative blogs, you parrot every single right wing talking point when it comes to the media.

Studying journalism? No. Incorrect. Close, but wrong.

I hit right wing talking notes because I think conservatively when I look over the news. Is that a crime?

One of these ISIS idiots ran over 2 soldiers (one has since died) in Quebec on Monday and then fled from police. He flipped his car into a ditch and when he got out, they administered the lead pill to him as well.

Coming after earlier this month when Canada announced they would assist the US in the ISIS air strikes campaign.

I believe that what we are seeing is a response to that announcement, yes.
Reportedly there has been a spike in ISIS chatter on the subject of Canada in recent weeks.

It sure does look like a response from ISIS at first glance. But Im not going to speculate yet.

I remember Drudge saying that Columbine was being attacked by like a dozen Hells Angels at first the day of the school shooting.
