NASCAR May Lift Hard Liquor Ban
NASCAR officials may rescind their ban on sponsorships from hard liquor companies. "It's under review," says Jim Hunter, NASCAR's vice president of communications. "We're trying to do what's right, weighing all the pros and cons." NASCAR allows beer companies to sponsor cars, and in recent years also has allowed hard liquor companies to advertise their "malt beverage" products; Smirnoff vodka, for example, is not allowed, but Smirnoff Ice is allowed. Other racing series are allowing hard liquor advertising. Jim Beam sponsors a team in the IRL IndyCar Series, and Crown Royal is the title sponsor of IROC all-star series. If NASCAR does lift the ban, it could provide a boost to teams that are searching for sponsors.(USA Today)(4-5-04)

about time ! Nastycar should not be censoring sponsorship $$ matter of fact these "offical sponsor of NASCAR" $$$ should be going to the teams that need $$ not lining the already fat pockets of France and company

I agree 100%

Now we just need for Playboy to show some renewed interest in sponsoring a car. I can see it now, the hood with the Playmate of the month. And, the rear, well it could be a shot of her rear...

I have no trouble with liquor companies sponsoring cars. I'm not to sure of Playboy, though. This is a family oriented sport, I don't think Playboy is a family oriented mag. Remember, this is just my opinion, your milage may vary. :)

I really don't see much difference between "Smirnoff Ice" and "Southern Comfort" or "Jack Daniels" sponsoring a car.

It may limit what I allow my kids to wear apparel wise, but it's not like that is a big buck deal anyway. My son really likes Mark Martin, but he isn't allowed to get anything with a Viagra logo on it. He likes DJ just about as much, se he's got more UPS stuff. No big deal here.

I have no problem with Liquor companies sponsoring cars, but there may be a TV problem, as liquor ads are banned from advertising on TV and the networks may balk.

It didn't seem to intrerfere with the IROC race.

The only inteference was that Brian Vickers couldn't drive in the IROC this year. That will be the only hitch in their git-a-long is the age of the driver of the sponsored car.

Maybe that's not a bad thing Maj. to raise the age of the drivers.

But really what is the difference if they drive in a series sponsered by beer or licquor?

And one of my peeves, if Brian wasn't allowed to run IROC, WHY wasn't the #2 man, David Green invited?

I'd say we're close to this happening...

I personally don't think of the malt beverages when I see Matt run the black Smirnoff car...I think vodka. Also didn't someone have a Bacardi sponsor last year??

I'm sure there are a couple other examples that escape me...
