Got the bad news I was expecting. :(
Took Little Dog into the vet for a 2nd opinion from the other vet --- he agreed with the 1st. LD has an "aggressive and angry" tumor on his gum and the roof of his mouth. The surgeon said to fight it aggressively would mean taking about half of LD's upper jaw. I'm NOT going to do that to him. The vet said the best would be to just let him go home and live his life, and when it's time, put him down.

And that's what I'll do. LD still loves to dig moles and chase squirrels. He doesn't have a problem with eating, but I'm going to switch him to canned food to make it easier.
I'll know when it's time.

I'm sorry. That's tough. Can't take your dogs for granted. I just lost the last one of two I grew up with about 2 months ago.. Definitely a bummer.

Sorry to hear that TRL. Never a good day when we hear news about our pets. I'm a dog lover myself. 4 of them. I spent $4k on my youngest Husky at her last visit, so her ass better be around for a long time.

That's commitment.

That's commitment.

No, its karma.

The week before, I made fun of a buddy for taking his cat to the vet and spending $250 for a broken leg. I told him some ammo for a .22 was much cheaper.

A week later, my dog got parvo. Son of a! Thats some nasty stuff right there. No guarantees of surviving, was gonna put her down, but when push came to shove, I couldn't do it. Did whatever I had to do.

$3,250 was for her, the other $750 was for treating my other 2 adult dogs. They contracted the parvo too, but its not as dangerous to adult dogs as it is pups.

Financially, I would be forced to put her down. The number one reason I do not own pets at this point.

Sad to hear. It is a tough when you lose your pet. Hell, it's more than that. Its your friend.

That is one of the reasons why I dont own any. When you get too attach and when it's time to let him/her go it hurts like a bitch. (No pun intended)

Putting a dog down is one of the toughest things I ever had to do.
I have done it twice, once for a stray puppy that was too far gone for the doctors to save.

The vet was kind and didnt even charge to put him down.
I buried in the backyard.

Sorry to hear. Glad you're doing what you can to make his life the best it can be. I'm sure he appreciates it too.

Sorry to hear that TRL. I hope you still enjoy a lot of time with LD

Just this week my youngest dog needed to get diagnosed at the surgeon at a ridiculous cost of $750 to me and am now told her knee op will be $4500

Wow, that sucks. Sorry to hear. It's difficult, they're a part of the family. :(
I had to do the same to my last two. Like you said, you'll know when it's time.

Sorry to hear TRL. I rescued a St Bernard/ Lab mix and he needed some surgery for his throat, I had to feed him every 2 hours by a syringe for 12 weeks. I was rewarded with 12 years of unconditional love. I miss him to this day, it's tough for sure. I hope LD is with you a good while longer.

Chasing squirrels and digging moles is a good form of therapy as well as happy times.

Today was the day. Little Dog gave me the look that said "now". I held him close as he quietly went to sleep.
Brought him home and placed him so he could see the front gate and both doors to the house. He's still on duty,
just like he's been on duty for the last 8 years.

I don't know if Big Dog has realized yet that his buddy isn't here.

Not a good afternoon all around.

Sorry to hear TRL, sounds as though you have given him a good home.

So sorry TRL. I know how tough this is for you. My thoughts are with you.

Tough to lose a loyal four legged friend, their spirit lives on I believe. Be easy on yourself, and remember all the good times along with the tougher end times.
