Heats, Not Stages, Might Be An Even Better Way To Get NASCAR Cooking Again

You got a mouse in your pocket? :D
I was hoping whomever stepped on their junk would figure it out and dump the scheduled cautions after this year’s trial run. This is the reason I don’t tune in.

More stages might just finish killing it for me .. its real close. If it weren't for Kyle still racing I would have have skipped this season completely

They sure are .. we used to watch the races as a family, now I watch most of the stage riddled crap by myself
I was a fiend. Watched every qualifying lap, every lap of each series' race. I even used to watch the banquet. Too many changes in such a short time span. I just can’t do it anymore.

I was the same way .. did the same with F-1 until they did away with the screaming V-8 engines. Now I have more time to watch bicycle races .. its a win situation

After reading that article that was posted, I think Nascar is doing more than bandages for the new car. What I think I read was they are doing away with most of what makes the current car such a dud.
I honestly hops so, I really do, I would love for the racing to be better, I would love to be excited to watch a race again on a Sunday!

I too watched qualifying, Xfinity, Trucks, all the pre race, the middle of the week race shows and bought a lot of racing gear. Now I'm lucky if I watch the end of the race or any at all. It's not on my priority list any more, makes me kind of sad because it was a big part of my life once.

Bingo, the duels, are worthless at this point, there is no reason to run them now. Just line them up how they qualify on Sunday.
It's a waste of equipment and time, it used to be fun, hell Daytona used to be fun , now it's just a wreck fest sorry ass race.

A writer's not-so-great idea is put in Forbes, and it stirs the pot again on how to "fix" NASCAR.

I like stage racing. I enjoy the Homestead event but believe the regular season champion should receive equal honor AND automatically be one of the 4 in the playoff championship.

Bottom line is the RACING. Counting on the next gen car to get rid of the aero issues that make it so hard to race side by side or draft.

Yep ....... my family used to get together on Sunday to watch and I miss that. All the bells and whistles to make it better are going backwards . just imagine adding MORE stages next year o_O

Everyone has an idea how to fix NASCAR, but with the exception of a bad idea hear and there, I think the racing this year, with the stage format and the eliminations leading up to a dramatic finale, is finally worthy again. If they'd leave it alone now and start focusing a little more on promotion we might see an improvement.

That said however, the fact of the matter is that America's love affair with the automobile is drifting away. The car is just a means of travel for so many now, and there''s no excitement being produced anymore that can translate into a love of racing. I mean yeah, there are still motorheads around, just not nearly as many. And the product of what's being given by the manufacturers is doing anything for it. Hell, I went somewhere the other day, parked between two white cars. One was a Chevy, the other a Ford, and I couldn't tell the difference.

VaDirt ya nailed it. But I’ll go a step further and say what hammered it was the recession. It’s not all the changes, it’s the almost depression our country faced for 4 years or so. People gave up their tickets, their camping, and never came back.

That’s why your short tracks, dirt tracks and road tracks still have a great attendance, but the big series (Indy & NASCAR) took a beating

Where did the TV audience go? Doesn't cost a dime to set in front of the TV. NASCAR became far too politically correct and absolutely boring and predictable. There are no characters, no Jimmy Spenser types. Every driver gives the exact speech, Thank the sponsor, name all of them, thank the team owner and the guys back at the shop. Same ole, same ole. The cars all look the same. Just sad. But, it is what it is. NASCAR has became to control freakish. Monitor every step everybody takes, and word they speak. Geeeeez!!! Let 'em race, beat and bang, argue, fuss and fight. If I want to watch a bunch of choir boys, I'll go elsewhere. I want to watch some old fashioned hard nosed racing. Not forty "best buddies" that hang out and play handball together. I like rivalries. Do a little research to see how much Earnhardt Sr. liked Geoff Bodine. Or check out Rusty Wallace and DW in the 1989 Winston. Or Elliot, Earnhardt and Bodine in the !987 Winston. That's what's missing....in my humble opinion.

To go along with that, the Indy 500 had the lowest ratings in 31 years. People can blame this or that until they are blue in the face. IMO the racing is better than ever, but it doesn't matter to people who aren't interested in motorsports. There isn't a magic bullet that will bring back the glory days of the 60's, 70's 80's or 90's. for drag racing, sport car racing, open wheel or Nascar. But one thing for sure, none of it is going back to 15 minutes on the wide world of sports. Not as long as some of the crap that is on the tube continues to be broadcasted. Hopefully stage racing will continue to reduce the number of commercials covering up the racing action. The flow of the race is back. Before the stages, you almost knew to the lap when they were going to find a reason no matter how flimsy to throw a caution..got to get those commercials in.

Let's not hold our breath.

Hmm...I beg to differ on this, there are plenty of motorheads around, it's just different. You have Honda, Nissan. Hyundai, and Toyota now...not Chevy. Dodge, and Ford...plenty of kids these days know how to mod a car. What Nascar needs is identity. If you can't tell a manufacturer from one another what point is there in racing. It's, and always has been about the brand.

I think the problem Xfinity had was that the heat races didn't have any consequences. Okay you race in the heat, but you also get to start in the main, all the heat does is improve or worsen your starting position for the main event. If the heat races in Xfinity had real consequences, they would've been more exciting. If NASCAR did heat races, here is how it should be done.

400 mile race, let's say 40 cars qualify for the heat races.

Heat 1: 90 miles: 20 cars: The top 10 cars qualify for the main, The top 10 earn points.
Heat 2: 90 miles: 20 cars. The Top 10 cars qualify for the main, The top 10 earn points
Last Chance Heat: 20 miles: 20 cars: Top 5 qualify for the main: The top 5 earn points.
Main: 25 cars, 200 miles, every car earn points.

If you don't qualify for the main through the heat races, too bad, so sad, go home.

You are correct about the "tuner" motorheads. But we are on the same page about the manufacturers and lack of identity.

You don't need a great race to make family gatherings the highlight of life.

The Daytona qualifying races have become useless because pretty much everyone is guaranteed a spot in the race. Those used to be the best races in speedweeks because of the consequence of a bad run or the reward of a good run.

They need to do away with those honestly. They mean less than nothing at this point.
