How do you attend a NASCAR race weekend?

That's how I feel. I just wish the wife like racing even a little bit. The only reason we agreed on Daytona for next year is because of Disney and staying at a resort where she has something to do while Aiden and I are at the track.

Hopefully one of the chicks I date after this marriage likes racing.

how did the girl you're married to now get past the interview ?

I live 1 1/2 hours from Bristol, so going there is very easy to do a day trip there and back, Martinsville is about a 3 hour trip...which s doable as a day trip but it is a LONG day. When the wife and I go to Martinsville we like to stay around Hillsville which is bout half way...main reason we do this is incase of rain we can get back easier the next day...

I was just looking for more pics of our 5er that we attend races in and found this one with the deck open. We just bought this rv last fall and it's maiden voyage was to Bristol and later in the fall to Martinsville. In twelve more days it will be heading back to Bristol.

It's a toy hauler, or no, it's a bar, or no, it's one pole short of a portable strip joint, or no, it's my bedroom when you goto Eldora!

That entire back part is the beer storage area, he has to refill it once a race week.

i'm thinking of "commuting" to Chicagoland this September for the Cup race

they run a train from Chicago to Joliet, where buses run from the train station to the track and back

it's was a quick and easy way in and out of the place the last time I did it

We met in 1994. I didn't get hooked on racing until 1997 or so. Even when we got married in 1999 I think she figured my affinity for racing would fade. She figured wrong. In her defense, she did attend a Cup race at MIS in 2009 along and the All-Star event last May. She even went to HMS with us. But she was very clear that it was the last time she'd do a NASCAR based vacation. She'd rather go to some resort and sit on her ass for a week whereas I'd rather mix in relaxation with sight seeing and activities. And boobs.

Your wife sounds very nice and very resonable. You should try listening to her more often. When you get old like me , she will bring you soup and your slippers.

Indianapolis - don't bother.

I understand that NASCAR racing at Indy isn't the most exciting on the circuit but are there other reasons to not bother? The reason I ask is because I am considering attending the Brickyard weekend in July and staying at a hotel west of Indy.

She is nice, reasonable and loyal. We just have different ideas on what constitutes a fun vacation. Makes it difficult when we can't agree on acitivities.

Remember the soup and slippers .It will all become clear to you.

I don't see this in my future. The minute I ask for soup or slippers is the day I get asked if my effing arms/legs are broken.
Oh you do have a frisky one . I think that she will mellow as she gets older and grow to love you. Either that ,or she will get forgetful .;)

If the racing isn't that exciting (and it isn't), is there any reason TO bother?

Seriously, if you can't get seats in the corners or maybe opposite the pits, you won't see anything. The infield is built up, so you can only see the straightaway directly in front of you. You won't be able to see much of that, since the heads of the crowd will block your view to the left and right. Definitely do NOT get any of the seats on the inside of the track facing out; you can't even see the Jumbotrons from there. Parking is a worst I've experienced, and the last I'd heard there was no 'Park and Ride'; that may have changed.

It used to be a better weekend when the Trucks and N'wide ran at IRP / ORP / LOR / whatever they're calling it this year. You could see a couple of nights of real racing for less than the cost of the Cup race. LOR is on the west side of town; check their schedule. I think WoO runs that weekend. Also check the schedule for the Indianapolis Speedrome on the east side of town. It's a typical short track like you might find anywhere else, often overlooked by its better known neighbors. If you're going for the weekend, consider the Grand Am race. Ordinarily I'd gripe about the sight lines at a road course, but you may actually be able to see more of that race from the infield than you will of the Cup race from the stands.

For the non-racing family members, White River Gardens and Zoo downtown are nice. Zionsville is north of town, one of those little burgs some ladies enjoy, with a packed shopping district full of quaint shops and some good restaurants.

I'm ready. For day one, that is.
Going to the NNS race tomorrow with a buddy. The rules are that there ain't no rules.
Going on Sunday with boss lady. The rules are whatever she says they are. It's called picking your battles.

Let's do this.
I only live about 15 mins from the track (if it were in a straight line.)
Can't wait.

That's exactly why I want to go. Also, it's only a 3.5 hr drive from my house.

I get that . My first trip to Daytona , I sat in the first row , right behind the wheelchairs . I only saw the roofs of the cars as they passed by and a little on turn three . Loved every minute of it . It was Daytona ! And it was pre-jumbotrons.

'S cool. It's all a question of what you want for your entertainment dollar. I hope you have a good time.

appreciate all the good info in your earlier post

i've been thinking of checking out Indy too and, like you say, have always figured that a seat high up in a corner is the place to be

That's exactly why I went, Matthew. I knew the racing wasn't the greatest, but I just wanted to go. We had seats under the cover on the front stretch, just to the 4th turn side of the finish line. We could see Turn 4 clear to the middle of Turns 1 and 2. Great position.
Hubby and I did the whole 9 yards --- midget races, truck races, Busch races at the little track, then the big race at Indy. Even did the IROC. Talk about exhaustion when it was all over.

Wishard hospital in Indy used to rent rooms in the old school of nursing housing dirt cheap. They are intended for the family of patients but it is never full so they let race fans stay there. I used to stay there every year when I crewed at the 500. They have a small kitchen and a full bath in each room.

Dont forget anything!!

Sounds awesome, have a great time.

My cousin lives in North Las Vegas, he pays for my tickets to the Vegas event. I pay for his Cali tickets.
This year my sister and her husband are going to Vegas along with my finacee an I. We drive out and stay at famlies houses. We tailgate for four days, shoot pool at night and then drive home Monday morning. My cousin has a pickup truck and my sister has a Roadtrek camper van so there's plenty of room at our tailgate party. Two BBQ's for burgers, dogs, fajitas, etc.
For the Cali race, we'll drive out and tailgate for the Nationwide race but we'll ride the train for the Cup race. Metrolink station is less than a mile from my house and the train takes you straight to the track.

Thinking of going to loudon before eldora DP, ever been there?

my wife must be a rare breed she loves racing if something came up and i couldnt go to a race shed leave me and go alone haha we just ordered our re-58 headsets big upgrade from teh tp60 cant wait till bristol and charlotte

I haven't. MAGICMILER is who you need to talk to. He goes there all the time. I bet he could give you some great info on that track.

That sounds like a heck of a trip though, Loudon, Eldora, & Indy possibly?

Nah, we want to go to tracks and races she hasnt been to for now, she's been to indy. After mapquesting the trip, 25 hrs to Loudon, Loudon to Eldora 15 hrs, Eldora to the hacienda 12 hrs, we are rethinking that, it's a helluva lot of diesel and a three week trip. Maybe a separate trip to Charlotte memorial day weekend and a couple of others.

And how long can the gator stay away from the bayou?

Wife and I have been to a couple races over the last few years. 3 years ago we went to the All-Star race in Charlotte. Stayed at a hotel (LaQuinta) near the airport. It was about a half hour to 45 minute drive from the track. That was once you waited a couple hours in traffic.
Bristol last August we used Bristol Race Rentals. We met a couple of friends there. It ended up being less than $100 per night, per person, for a 2 bedroom house. It was about 15 minutes from the track. My only complaint was the giant, mutant bees that had set up shop in the attic. One got in the house, and I ended up smashing it with a pan. Never seen a bee that big.
Next weekend I'm heading to Vegas. My company is sponsoring the #33 RCR Ty Dillon NNS car for a few races, so this is completely a company trip.

Trying to get ready here in western PA for our Bristol trip but the weather is more than uncooperative. Normally we have everything tested in the 5er by the time we're this close to our trip. The furnace tested out just fine but we've been unable to put any water through the pipes with it being so cold. 22 degrees out there again this morning. Two more inches of snow yesterday. What the heck's up with that damn groundhog anyhow? This was all supposed to be gone by now. Oh well, this weekend is supposed to hit 40+ but we'll see. :(

Welcome back Robby, good stuff .Do you get any company perks at Vegas with your driver?

Some good news for those of you that attend races at Martinsville.....
Improvements To Parking Areas Underway

Heavy equipment has been roaring at Martinsville Speedway for the past 10 days carving new lanes through parking lots near the track’s main entrance.

Over two miles of parking aisles are being cut through parking lots on the left side of Speedway Boulevard when you enter the track’s main entrance. When the project is completed over 3000 tons of gravel will have been spread over the new lanes. The work will be completed in time for the STP® Gas Booster™ 500 at Martinsville Speedway on April 7.

“I think our fans are really going to be pleased when they pull into the parking lot for the STP® Gas Booster™ 500,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “Over the past few weeks we’ve moved a lot of dirt and put down a lot of stone, all in an effort to make ingress, egress and parking a much better experience.

Buck --- I went to 40+ races without the hubby. He preferred his recliner and own bathroom to the crowds. :) And since he was claustrophobic, I understood ---- and went without him. :D
