Hurricane Season 2025

I'd hoped to squeeze in a couple of hours of birding this morning before the July 4th tourists woke up and the 9am beach parking rates kicked in. TS3 will be bringing rain soon enough that I wouldn't get much dry time in the field. I'll see if Darling Bride wants to go out for breakfast.

It’s now Chantal.

The forecast was off badly, likely because NWS cuts, and the impacts are already beginning. Just a tropical storm though.

Now is the time to get the whole house generator ready for the inevitable...

In the woods here in New England, this asset is a necessity. Powers the well, most importantly, and the rest of the house. We've gone up to 2 weeks with no power, fortunately there is a truck stop on the state line that has generator power, so fuel replenishment is easily accessible.

In my National Guard days, I was called out for hurricane duty four times. Restocking fuel can be a challenge. We saw plenty of people with home generators who couldn't get out of their neighborhoods for days or a couple of weeks. For others, running an full-house HVAC system in August or September was too much of a drain. Here in SE NC last September, several neighborhoods were isolated by flood waters that didn't recede for days. When they did, they exposed destroyed bridges or roads, so the isolation continued.

I'm sure that shoe fits your weather emergency needs but down here it can be a questionable investment. For those who can evacuate, it's often the recommended option.

Guess we've had more rain than I thought. Lots of flooding in Durham and over little toward the Piedmont. Yesterday was mostly just a drizzle for my place. Saying 6-8 inches in Western County's.

Time for the meteorology Powers That Be to change the way they categorize hurricanes. Ranking solely by wind speed doesn't adequately account for the potential damage from rainfall, storm surge, etc.

Sun is out full force here now. HAWT as phuck! Moved my truck to let the usual parking spot dry. Put the "ramp" back over the step to porch as have a truck full of Amazon stuff coming any minute. Need to buy few pavers to make that step situation prettier.

Needed to happen after Hurricane Florence.

That was, for all intents and purposes, a category four hurricane.
