Who becomes 2014 Champion if all 4 contenders fail to finish the first lap?

Who finishes the best among the four, it could be the unlikely p40 as represented in this case or a win. All that matters is beating the other three.

DP, I gotta ask. Are you hyped up on Newman being the champion just so it will show just how screwed up the current point system is in determining the championship winner?

Then the champion is determined by whoever NASCAR puts in front.

And ESPN puts cameras in all four garages as they race to repair their cars so they can make a few more laps.

imagine if all 4 looked like modified's. battle of the fender-less!

Gordon wins race
Newman 2nd without leading a lap
Logano 3rd and led a lap
Harvick 4th and leads most laps
Hamlin 43rd

then we have a 3-way tie on points and Newman wins championship with highest finish.

Im game.

To use a stick and ball analogy (re: Newman)

The New York Giants finished like 8-8 and defeated the undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl one year.

It's obviously not a direct analogy but NASCAR has PLENTY of ways to spin a Newman championship so the point system keeps legitimacy.

It would be fun to to see Newman bust up the insanity of the chase by winning it, but it ain't happening.

He has a done great job of taking above average equipment and not screwing it up.
26 races to get in the chase was very achievable for the equipment. Just drive smart and take what is available.

It was tougher in the elimination rounds, but he was resilant and pulled a rabbit out of the hat Sunday with the last lap pass to get into the finale. Nothing but respect for the accomplishment, I think doing more with less is definitive for his performance this year.

But at Homestead he will be commissioned with a greater task. Above average doesn't cut it here and he doesn't have three events to overcome the pure speed disadvantage with three solid runs against a faster car that had a disaster in one of the three events.

Harvick or Lagano will definitely hit the set up Sunday, one of them will have the spooky fast speed, I hope they both do. Barring a DNF or similar event he has no chance of keeping up.

Still the same he should be proud, a great driving performance for the equipment imo.

It is funny that Harvick left RCR because he felt that he would never be able to run for a championship with them only to end up racing against an RCR car for the championship.

I still think Harvick made the right choice,
Who would have ever expected this type of elimination tournament. And I do believe it has propelled Newman into the top four. I can't see him doing it with any of the other previous 97 point systems that have utilized.
No one else has ever won a title with no wins with any of the other formats.

Harvick wasn't one of Papas boys either, moving on was the right call. But Childress has been good for Newman, it was his best option and he has made the best of his fate.

No, nothing to do with the format of the Chase. I just wouldn't mind seeing the underdog win or Harvick or Logano. Hamlin, not so much. The whole being able to win the championship without having won a race has been around since the beginning. If it happens, it happens. Some on here will probably lose their mind about it but it is what it is.

The intent of the original post was, what if all 4 contenders did NOT finish the first lap for one reason or another? No laps led, no bonus points, in effect did not complete a lap. What then? Over to you Mr France.

4....22...11 spent 2 whole days testing at homestead recently........w/ their team cars too.
31 used their test at atlanta in aug. starts race at big disadvantage.

I think it goes to whoever crawls the farthest or what the positions were at the last scoring loop. That's what I believe they do after the restrictor plate demolition derbies.

I like Newman for all of the above reasons . Also the fact that he is a genuinely nice guy . He , and the other non top ten drivers routinely get dissed for not being very good drivers . I have always believed that all 43 are the best of the best and could win routinely in any other series . If it takes this format for an underdog to win , then great , I hope it happens every year .

that is the result this year, almost had two non winners in the final four, but it doesn't matter, the win and your in gave a couple of guys who really didn't have much of a chance, A.J. and Almirola four races to get their name and team out there, hope it helps their organizations continue to be, and the top teams had plenty of opportunities to make the chase, but under the radar Newman was doing a hell of a job driving a car that wasn't the fastest or best handling out there to decent finishes. I noticed mid way that he wasn't getting involved in territorial fender benders like he usually did, but that was about it until it got close to the cut off and I kept seeing that he was pretty solidly in without needing a win. The only way he wouldn't have made it was for win less drivers to take both spots. I thought he would be out the first round. Quite a story, bumps Larson, last lap of the last race before the race for it all and make it by one point.

Almirola's chase has been a disaster, but I've been quite impressed with what AJ's team has been able to do since getting eliminated. That 47 team has some fight in them.

Almirola has made some good money this year. I thought they would do better than they did though too. Can't bitch about A.J.'s season, I think they have their driver..and can't wait for road course time..wonder if Ambrose will show up?
