If my last name was France… My Ideal NASCAR.

its unfortunate choices are largely made one family rather than fan vote.

All I want NASCAR to do is maintain a level playing field. I imagine it is tricky to manage aerodynamic issues, teams working the grey areas, lots of logistical issues, weather issues, and who knows what other things it takes to put on 36 races.

The only tweak I'd like is 12 teams in the playoffs and 4 race rounds. (When a team is eliminated they should go back to the standard points system so everyone has a chance to improve their standing during the playoffs).

The two main things I'd focus on first are #1 the governance and ownership structure and #2 putting the human element front and center in the race. Comparing NASCAR to other sports governing bodies the biggest differences is that in NASCAR there are far too many groups trying to make a buck and it's obviously limiting the ability to reinvest in the sport. In almost all other leagues you have a simple structure where franchise owners (for-profit) own the participants and the venues, while the governing body (non-profit) owns the TV distribution and marketing rights but as a non-profit passes that income back down to the franchise owners.

NASCAR has three levels in it trying to make money at the team owner, track owner, and France Family/governing body level. If I were king for a day, I'd transfer the France Family's ownership of NASCAR into a non-profit independent entity with leadership elected by the charter owners and track owners. I'd permanently sever any remaining owner relationship between NASCAR and ISC. This should go a ways towards stabilizing the sport financially (think 10% more of the TV money going back to the teams) by eliminating redundant and unnecessary payments back and forth between the entities, but long-term I'd also push for ISC and SMI to give up their public corporation status. Hopefully with a new governance structure in place a better profit sharing arrangement can be worked out because right now it's a royal mess. Ideally I'd like to see the purse phased out altogether.

Part #2 to come...

How much would that cost?

How much would that cost?

We have no idea, and that's part of the problem. It could be cost prohibitive for the charter/track owners to buy it out unless BF gave it up voluntarily. Or if NASCAR itself is already bleeding cash then the France Family's interest is effectively worth zero. We have no way of knowing due to NASCAR being a closely held enterprise.

You're really asking for Brian France / France Family to give up ownership of NASCAR? Also ISC and SMS, both of which are publicly traded corporations? Not gonna happen.

I'll have two of whatever you're drinking today. I don't think I could handle more than that.. ;)

Every l'il bit helps.

Just send it to me. I'll watch over it until we're ready to make an offer.

Hm. Like reading some of these replies, good stuff.

Having the Championship 4 be 3 races allows for Game 5, 6, or Game 7 moments depending on if a team is strong or not. I think I should have done 5 bonus points per win in all 3 series instead of 3, to place a greater emphasis on winning in the regular season & in the Championship 4.

The Chase schedules in all 3 series are also more balanced for less cookie cutters.

I'll make it simple. Just PM me your account and routing numbers and I get that right to you.

Ain’t got none. Banks won’t have me now that the president of the one I did business with won’t be available for twenty years or so. Keeping mine in Mason jars buried out back.

Do this, start an account for me ‘n you. Small deposit - say 20-25K, PM me the particulars ‘n I’ll make a matchin’ deposit in cash.

CART tried that and it didn't work because the owners only looked out for their interests.

This - It killed CART, and is causing no end of problems in F1 by giving the teams a say in the rules.

Consulted on the rules set - yes. But given an actual vote? - Hell No.

For all it's Flaws, having a united sanctioning body/promoter has been the best model for motorsports.

That Brian France has decided to fiddle with things is on him.

But at least his successor will have the ability to fix things if it ever gets that bad and wont have to fight with the teams or a sanctioning body over needed changes.

I agree with a lot of what is posted here, but one thing I haven't seen mentioned would be encouraging the new title sponsor to bring back something like the Winston Million. That sort of thing could bring attention to some of NASCAR's marquee events outside the Daytona 500 that is currently lacking. For modern relevancy, it should be a two million dollar bonus. I'd either drop Talladega Fall or make it three out of five so the Brickyard could be included (in a last ditch effort to improve attendance, in two more years, I'd move it to Iowa).

Bleeding cash? Their current 10% "keep" of the TV revenue stream is around $81 million a year. 8 to go after this season. That figure is $648 million.

The only walking these guys are doing is to the bank.
