Figured with all the debate that goes around the playoff system I'd tabulate how many points guys would have if we used the F1 points system that only awards points to the Top 10. In case anyone was wondering, F1 goes 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1. Through the Coca Cola 600 it goes...

I don't like the F1 points system used for the bigger fields in NASCAR because it rewards fluke finishes over consistency for mid-pack drivers. Example- McDowell being P11 with F1 points but P16 using current NASCAR points. And Blaney has been consistently in the top 15 all year in NASCAR putting him in P7 in the standings but since finishing 15th gets you nothing in F1 he's 14th using their method.


It works well in F1 with the smaller fields and the same drivers finishing in pretty much the same spots every race.

McDowell has finished very high in the races he scored points in though. In my opinion looking at this, I love how it rewards guys for winning and scoring Top 3 finishes. The fact that Larson is ahead of Denny is telling.

What are you kidding? NASCAR’s current system rewards fluke finishes over consistency already.

And there's flukes exposed in the F1 points as well. A driver that finishes 11th every race is going to lose to a driver who finishes 10th one week and 30th all the other weeks.

Yes and no. If you're only rewarding the top 10 then you have teams just outside that like RCR and Ganassi that reap the same rewards as the Rick Ware Crapboxes. Personally, I don't think that's right for the teams.

Reddick is 13th and Dillon is 15th. Chastain is 18th and Kurt is 20th.

You’re rewarded for good performances. McDowell is a good example, has one win but also a 3rd, 6th, 7th and 8th. They’re regularly a Top 20 car in the field

I like the aspect of the F1 system in which scoring points is an actual accomplishment. Obviously it is is designed for a 20-ish car field. A similar points scale for a 36-40 car field would likely award points through 20th. I wouldn't mind that.

How the final race is ran with 4 cars eligible and say one of the cars has 10 wins, 20 top 5's and 10 top 10's, most wins and consistent all year and has a bad Goodyear tire at the final and ends up 4th in points is

I’m all for going away from a flat points scale to something more progressive, but agreed that it would need to be expanded to accommodate the much larger fields here. No FIA world championship using that system is going to regularly have 40 cars competing.
