IMSA 2025

Now 3/3 on poles for the year for Dries Vanthoor. Hopefully BMW can convert this time.

Well, three poles for the #24 BMW have now been converted into three wins for the #7 Penske Porsche. At least BMW finally secured a podium this time. And Laurens Vanthoor, doing a one-off with Rexy in GTD, also caps off three in a row after being the third driver in the #7 at the Florida enduros.

They won’t quit coming here for a number of reasons, but once again both class winners didn’t change any tires, and the second caution spoiled any fuel drama within the GTP class. The series and the cars have outgrown a race of this length but the packed weekend schedule probably precludes a change to make it a proper 2:40 race. Let’s get to Laguna.

BMW is fast, but they can never seem to make it count.
They've definitely improved in the last couple years but can't put a race together on a consistent basis.
Where they really seem to struggle on the IMSA side is race execution - pit stops and strategy. I was critical of their driver lineup the first two years, but the shakeup this year has been very positive in that regard. WRT have been doing a very good job with the WEC program and there’ve been recent rumblings that they could end taking over the IMSA program from RLL as well.

#60 Acura finally showing effects of being bumped offline two laps ago. Smoke from left rear. Flagged and pitting. Wing broken loose on right side tire wrapped around parts. Now penalty for unattended tyre

I know Dries wanted that P2 spot badly, but that lead pack was so far ahead he managed to reverse out of the runoff and secure the final podium spot. BMW continue to get closer and closer to the Penske Porsches.

Very cool for AO to capture the first win with ‘Roxy’, and Winward stay hot in GTD as well.

Awesome weekend of sports car racing we’ve had.

Super Trofeo is further down on the list of IMSA support series I pay attention to, but this was really cool:
