I have dial up for right now and am considering going to a DSL. So I wanted to poll my closest friends on what they have and how they like. Just gathering info, anything you can share with me will be appreciated.

I've got cable. I got a deal on a package with Time Warner for the cable modem and digital cable t.v. I really, really like it. It's faster than my multiple T1 connection at work. (Of course, their server is crap.) I recommend it highly.

DSL is generally just as fast as cable, but that depends on how far away you are from the main office. It's run by the phone companies. From what I understand, though, DSL is a slowly dying technology. If you believe that, and if you'd like to avoid having to later switch to a newer technology, don't get it. If it's your only choice, get it. :)

Does Cable Modem count for DSL (in the poll)? I used to have dial up (aol for goodness sake!) and it pretty much sucked. It was really slow and dumped me all the time. Switched to cable when they started offering it out here and I love it! wouldn't go back for anything. Worth the extra money if you're online a lot.
 
Cable modem here too. Have had it for two years and will never go back to dial-up. Well worth the extra cost. :)
 
Very happy with my dial-up so far and don't feel like spending almost double for dsl given the amount of time i'm on the net when i do get back to work in a couple of weeks.

The only diffrence between cable and dsl is cable goes from house to house , while dsl is a straight line from your house to your telephone company or isp.

cable/dsl (depending where you live at, what your isp is, and how far away you live from your isps server) 200-300 kbps
Isdn 65-128 kbps

That's not true. They're entirely different technologies. Cable is run by your cable company, and uses both coaxial and cat 5 ethernet cable. DSL is run by your phone company, and uses either straight phone line (RJ-11) or cat 5 (RJ-45). They tend to achieve the same speeds, and are often referred to as one, but they are very different. :)
 
just depends what you do on the net really, if your download big or decent size programs alot(ex. mp3s aka songs). Its best to get something faster then dialup, if all you do is chat a little and look at web pages dialup is fine.
 
Yes thats true about the type of wire but I was talking about there main diffrence, and I know that is true I have several web sites from road runner and other isps. and you will get a better conection if you live closer to the server on either conection, some isps put a limit on your connection so everyone will get the same speeds if possible. some small companys have no bandwith limit whats so ever and the places that limit bandwith will allow you to get more if you pay more money.
 
I have dial up and AOL. I don't have any problems here, but I kow people that do. I get booted off about once ever 3 months. I can live wiht that, and my speed is listed at 28800 whatever that means.:) Cable cost about 3x as much because I have a sat. dish. I can live with what I got just fine.
 
28800 means your getting 28 kbps thousand bytes per second

Unlucky me cant get Cable, its not available where i live, and I dont really want to spend 40 a month for DSL, plus install and modem. So dial up will have to work for now
 
i have cable, and, like most who do, i could never even picture going back to stone-age dial up

Good connection there Judas,

I'm on Comcast as well, but your connection speed doubles mine. Cable can be affected by the number of users on any given line. Mine is pretty loaded I think.
 
yea alot of the times cable can get better download then a t1 but a t1 will own cable in uploads anytime
 
if your cable is uncapped you should be able to get over a meg the highest I have seen someone have on cable conection is 1.5 megs
 
well, down here in Smyrna, DE, I would say 50% of the population is retired and not into internet. so my cable lines are probably using a light load:D
 
I am also one that uses cable. And it is a good thing I do because as much as I am on the internet no-one would be able to call me. I don't think I would be happy with dial-up. Besides the phone I am glad I only have to pay one set price for the month and have unlimited use. I would definitely be in trouble the other way.. :)
 
Got Cable also, it's faster, less trouble connecting and not getting kicked off all the time like I did when i had Dial-up. Would never go back to dial-up, only problem is when the cable goes out so does your internet connection.
 
Remarkably, my cable connection has worked every time I've needed it to, and swiftly. In the worst weather, and even when my digital cable box was working screwy. And I use this thing a lot, as you may have noticed. :o
 
Did any of you cable guys check your speed?

Curious because of the difference between mine and Judas1. We both use Comcast but he's twice as fast. Hmmmm......

Mebbe better get an inspector to check for illegal "innovations"! :D

abooja is twice as fast too, gonna have to get in a provisional;:o
 
I think it might also have something to do with my processor -- AMD Athlon XP 1800+. It's supposed to be able to achieve speeds between 1.8 and 2.0 GHz. Not sure if mine does (I haven't overclocked it), but it's not bad, whatever it is.

Don't know if this should make that much of a difference, though. There are plenty of people in my area who use this same service. Maybe they're all still commuting home and eating dinner?

Which is better, Cable Modem or xDSL ?
There is no simple answer to the question, it depends on your area, ISP, time of day, moon phase and your needs. One of the major advantages of DSL over Cable Modems is that the line is not shared to the Central Office, however, the slow connections are rarely associated with this segment of your connection. Cable Modems have higher bandwidth, however the connection is shared and as a result the performance is similar to DSL.
Generally, Cable Modems can achieve better throughput, which varies a lot, while DSL usually provides a more constant feed, with lower latency.

It'll probably take me a month to sort through all the information y'all supplied. Looks like we got some real smarties out there. You're a great bunch of people and I appreciate all the knowledge you shared.
 
I have dialup and I hate it I know places where you can download movies and other things but I cant. Songs take 10-20 minutes to download depending on how big and when I download programs it can get pretty anoying. Not to mension having to tie up the second phone line, I would do anything to get dsl or cable but they dont offer them here right now , all they have thats faster is isdn and and satelite I dont have the money either right now.

I have to disagree with those statements. Although the hookup info is correct, the speeds are terribly misleading. Every time I do a speed test on cable, I am almost twice as fast as average DSL service.

Also, you speed on Satellite is only the download speed. Upload is much much slower and in most cases requires a phone line along with the Satellite.
 
depends what type of dsl service you have some types are alot slower the cable some the same some faster, but it is alot of hastle.Cable also has alot slower upload then download, and its also not very stable some cables can have a faster download then t1 but uplaod is not even close and neither is the stability
