Inverting the Field

At the beginning of Saturday's practice Mike Joy said NASCAR would invert the qualifying order as a quick April Fool's Gag. This got me thinking however, what if the field was inverted? This would be kind of like some local Saturday night dirt track races. Would there be rules in place to prevent top teams from putting together bad qualifying laps to be at the front of the field? Just a thought, what do you all think?

Peer pressure up to and including threats of violence works on the short tracks.

high point men to the rear.

no sandbagging!

I have a crazy idea. How about we let 40 cars qualify their way into the event, and then let them race for 400 to 500 miles. Only throwing the caution out when track conditions threatens the safety of the drivers or other track personal and at the end of the race, we find out who had the best car and driver of that race.

Nah, it'll never work.

Jimmie Johnson would've started on the pole last week under this format.....

Damn you Chad Knaus

Oh Dear... dont give Brian France any ideas to use this idea to invert the field after each stage.

The basis for a great idea. It needs to go a bit farther.

Screw qualifying. Increase the number of stoppages. The decision to invert will be up to the fans. Vote by device via a toll number, let’s say a dollar, limited only by the ability to connect or pay. They vote for inverting or not inverting – if inverting, how many, 5 to 10. They go to the back of the lead lap cars.

The nuanced crowd would go orgasmic watching the fastest cars move back up through the field. Studying the strategy used by the mid-pack and field fillers. Not to mention the way cool accidents to bring out more cautions.

If they even attempted that we would have cars on the track slowing with vibrations and tires going down during qualifying in record numbers. JJ would never make the top 20 again.

On these very pages, posts by some the greatest racing minds on the internet said they didn’t think they’d like the stag-ments, but, low and behold – they DO!

The same thing will happen when we began inverting the field. Let's make NASCAR great again.

99% of the time I would see an inverted field race at
my local short dirt track, the cream came to the top
with in 3 laps. Probably tack 5 laps at the Nascar level.
Seems like I remember them doing this a time
or two at the All Star race over the years.

I think it is something we could very well see Nascar doing in the next year or 2. I would prefer the inversions to stay at the local short tracks myself.

There's more to do than simple inversions.

Random closed/opened pits when the stoppages happen.

speaking from experience? ;)
Yes.

The Super Modified group I travelled all over the Northwest with inverted the field for the A Main. Points were awarded for positions gained so ... if you were fast enough to qualify first (last) and won the race, you could earn more points and money than someone who started first and won the race.

Sandbagging was ummm ... frowned upon, to be polite about it.

Why don't the fans just vote on the starting order, then vote again and the end of each segment. That way if a driver does something to tick them off, think Blaney wrecking Earnhardt, the fans can send them to the rear.

Can anyone tell me what username Brian uses when he read this board?

Invert the field? **** that. Invert the track.

If they're going to invert the field there would need to be incentive to qualify up front ..or don't do it every week.. randomize it somehow so they don't know whether or not to sandbag.

I never liked the field inversions when they done it at The Winston... they let fans vote on it but most of the drivers knew it would happen... I recall one race back in the '90's when it was so flagrant what Sr. and Jeff Gordon done to make sure they were at the back of the pack for the next to last segment..... it looked like they were riding the brakes.

Deal out more points for the championship elimination thing that isn’t called what it was last season.

Everything will be great!

The only short track I know that pulls that gimmick is Bowman Gray.

Local short tracks in Michigan do it quite often. Its annoying when fast cars get caught up in BS caused by the squirrels starting up front. A friend of mine who drove said they had to play all sorts of games the heats to try to get a decent starting position and still make the main.

"Inversion is the path to the Dark Side.

Inversion leads to sandbagging.
Sandbagging leads to accidents.
Accidents lead to anger...

Hmmm.....inverting the field would be one way to get Danica to the front.

They inverted the field today after the second segment. It fuggin sucked, they shouldn't do that anymore.
