Iowa Speedway Sold

They closed our local short track too and built an apartment building in its place. Thank goodness we have Phoenix International Raceway where we can see Nascar events.

Yeah, that's cool. Lucky for me, I'm pretty close to Bristol, Charlotte, and Martinsville. I've got my Martinsville tickets for next year but the other two are a bit harder to find - at least for my quantity. Ah well. 1 is better than none!

As far as building apartment buildings over the track, to be honest, they may as well do something over Wilkes because it's just sitting there becoming more dilapidated every day.

Our local track is hanging on by a thread. Given its prime location I'll be surprised if we don't see a new subdivision pop up in the next decade.

Yahoo Sports has an article with some Rusty quotes
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/wallace-welcomes-stability-nascar-brings-204000578--nascar.html

It's not clear to me why Iowa Speedway was losing money. Good ticket sales. Premier events, except for Cup.

What changes with Nascar owning it? One big expense eliminated is likely the interest expense. Rusty said they had a high interest rate that was really hurting the track.

Without a Cup date it's not clear how they get any additional revenue. Better management can lower expenses some. And Nascar obviously can borrow money at much lower rates.

In the Yahoo article Rusty is talking about getting financial aid and incentives from the State. The spin would be selling it as the biggest pro sport in Iowa - no NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, etc.

Rusty also says he thinks they'll get a Cup date eventually.

@dcaraviello
NASCAR in Des Moines to introduce itself as new owner of Iowa Speedway. Jimmy Small, 28, formerly of industry svcs, is new track president.

Not what I figured would happen. I thought maybe it would be Rusty.

Wow, just 28 years old. :eek:

So Small says, "We hope we bring a lot of value to Newton, to Des Moines, to the state of Iowa. We want to continue to be an economic force in this area and continue to drive development. We want the speedway to be an entertainment hub year-round."

That was in the context of him wanting to reopen discussion with the Iowa state govt about getting state money to help expand and upgrade the track.

So ... what can they do to make it an "entertainment hub year-round"?
Do they want to add a casino like with Kansas?
