Is it just me? Or is DW getting worse?

I know many of you can't stand Darrell Waltrip as has been well documented. But I am starting to get downright sick of him. It seems like every time I look up he is on my screen. Usually in one of those dang commercials with his little brother. His diarrhea of the mouth seems to be getting a lot worse lately to me too. If I hear "boogity, boogity, boogity" one more time it is coming off!

Does it seem that way to any of you?

He's getting worse and shouldn't be on T.V. He needs to just...well...go away...and stay away.

I just don't pay him no nevermind. I belive through the intire race I cant tell you 5 words he says. They don't call him Jaws for nothing. :D

Quote from him: "He's in the middle, he's got a car in front and a car in back."

I'm glad he cleared that up for me.

A very good example of what I am talking about  .

Thanx Mustang!

I like DW always have!! I think DW makes the show better, IMO. Larry mac seems to always but in but noboody complains about that? At least DW waits to speak, then you can't get a word in for a few seconds!!

I didn't think he was any better or wqorse than he is usually. I tend to tune him out during the race, though.

 Why don't you folks grow up. I love "Boogity, Boogity, Boogity". In fact I have a decal that reads, "Boobity, Boogity, Boogity". I have it on the glass door to my sound system controls. In fact if memory serves me right DW drove a race car for years. Oh yes, and he was a Winston Cup Champion. Don't get me wrong, I am not a DW fan, but leave the man alone. His is entertaining. :cuckoo: :dual9mm:

Many people have driven a race car for many years. And quite a few have even won championships. But that doesn't mean I need to hear them running off at the mouth about how great they were or having them try to sell me something all the time.

DW is DW.

Always has been and likely always will be. You take him for how he is and either you like him or ya don't. Not a lot of middle ground it doesn't seem. Now you take the example of the "in the middle" statement given in this thread. If he had not clarified what he was talking about, and the statement went on for a bit following what was quoted here explaining why that was not such a great place to be at the time, someone who doesn't like DW would likely have been prone to point out that no-one was in the middle, they weren't even two wide let alone three wide with someone in the middle.

From what I have seen in what is equivalent to one season of racing with DW, Larry, and Jeff these guys have offered more in the way of insight and detailed explanations of what and why things happen than the other broadcast teams of the past were prone to do. How well I recall much complaining back in the day when ESPN had most of the coverage about going over and over the same explanations of the same thing week after week. This team seems to make a genuine effort to adapt to and explain many nuances of what you see.

But perhaps most importantly, these people seem to be having themselves a good old time. And that is important to me. Mostly because with all that has gone before in my past as racing fan, that is really the purpose of the deal. These folks have fun and that makes it much easier for an old phart like myself to have fun with them.

That's Racing!

DW may have won a racing Championship but that doesn't automaticly make him a good TV pesonality. IMO, I find him extremely annoying. He explains things in a way that makes me think that everyone listening must be 2 years old. I got the whole windsheild tearoff deal the first time he explained, 20 races ago. And he constantly has to put his foot in his mouth because he thinks he knows how every car is handling all the time, because he used to be a driver.

Leave DW alone. he does a great job for the most part. as far as a 2 year old goes, you have to remember that there are people tuning in for the first time and really benefit from stuff like that.
I also got the tear off stuff a few years ago when they started it. but in defense of new viewers they have a right to know about it also.

Some people on this forum have been race fans for only a few years and there ain't nothing wrong with that. we all have to start somewhere. I have followed winston cup like a hound for about 14 years, and, if not for the people like DW that I could listen too, I wouldn't have a clue whats going on with things like tear offs, loose. tight, push, oversteer, understeer, blade, spoiler, ETC.
I have learned over the years to just tune out certain stuff.
Beers are on me.

I agree HardScrabble. See 4xxxxxchwhatever. If that had not been explained to you, then you would have been completely out in the dark as to why DW kept telling "YOU", the same thing every week. You know, everytime I turn the TV on someone is trying to sell me something. If they didn't sell something I wonder how long they would be on the air. Thank the good Lord for FOX and their indepth coverage. From someone that was active in the sport for 21 years at a time when we did not have ANY TV coverage, I say to Mike, Larry, DW, Jeff, and all of the reporters in the tower, trackside, and in the studio, GREAT JOB--Just keep on keeping on. And above all else,"BOOGITY,BOOGITY, BOOGITY". Let's go racin'. :D

I agree with Hard Scramble, DW is just being DW.

His southern 'hick' style is something Fox loves. They are trying to keep the southern influence in the broadcast. I'm not saying being southern means you're a hick. I'm probably as big as a redneck as most of my fellow brotheren from down south.

I have disliked DW ever since he was a FOX broadcaster. It seemed to me he would be quick to rip on Matt if he had problems or caused a problem, but when he was running good & Mike Joy or Larry Mac were talking up Matt, DW wouldn't say a word and would quickly change the subject just to not talk about Matt. It seemed he was offended that Matt was in the #17, which I was confused about since Robbie, Jack & Matt asked him if it was OK if they ran the #17 in WC & Dw told them he would be honored if Matt ran it. :growl:

If you want to gripe and moan put the TV on mute, turn on MRN, change the channel.

I like dw. he gives the commentary a personality that i enjoy.

As far as new fans to this sport...don't ever think that they can't teach us old timers a thing or two.

I have only followed this sport since 92 & my little brother has only been following it for 3 years. He has been able to tell me a thing or two about Nascar and/or strock racing as a whole since he has gotten into it that I have to say, yeah you're right and I'm wrong. And he is a chef at a fancy private club in Milwaukee and I'm an engineering designer on v-twin engines that are used in power generators and lawn & garden equipment.

My little race bud, who is 10 years old now, has been an avid follower of the #24 since she was 5 years old. How many kids know whats going on in the world when they are 5??? When she got the chance to go to Michigan for her first race when she was six...that's all she talked about for a month. Was she excited when the #24 won that race.

Never under estimate someone's opinions or thoughts about racing or Nascar.

That is crazy talk. DW being bent over someone running the 17. just crazy
:puffin:

I feel I may need to clarify a few things. I used to like DW's style. He is very informative when he sticks to the race we are watching. When he gets on my nerves is when he and his partners keep reminding us how great a driver DW was. I get it. He was very successful. I don't dispute that for a minute. It is when they try to make him bigger than the race we are watching that I get annoyed. "Boogity, Boogity, Boogity" is a good example of that. I'm not sure why the Aaron's commercials bug me so much. It is probably as much Michael and his effeminate voice as it is DW himself. But it just seems like DW is being shoved down my throat as a product. As if there is something wrong with me if I don't just love DW.

I would rather swallow a live snake than listen to DW!Bring back Ned Jarrett=====or even Alan Bestwick!

Amen brother. My feelings on this twit are well documented here.

MRN rocks. I didn't even turn the telly on this week. Hit the yard and let MRN do the talking. No booger booger booger crap there. :pbjtime:

I can handle DW at times. But, I listen to MRN a lot more during the first part of the season. Some of the stuff Waltrip says cracks me up - like calling Jeff Burton's Busch car Pork Chop last year. Or nicknaming Ryan Newman "Quiet Riot." But it seems like he's always trying to out-do himself and after about three hours of one-liners I'm usually ready for something a little more serious.

I say nothing wrong with the way it is but, as long as Fox is paying Madden all them bucks, they might as well implement him in to some races. Haha, we would get things like, "To make a pas, you got to get in front of him", "Now the reason he ran out of gas is that they didn't put enough in" and after a car spinning, "Now I don't know what a whirling dervous, but I think that was just it"

I would say............prolly not!

I find DW humerous at times, but at the same time, a little bit goes a LONG way. I can basically tune him out for the most part, but there are times that I catch something funny he says.

:bounce: Congratulations on your smoke free days. I don't know how many day's it has been for me, since June 3, 1992. Now, for everyone else talking about the announcers or lack of one. You know if everyone liked the same car, there would be one make, FORD. If everyone liked the same color, there would be one, PURPLE. If everyone liked the same number, there would be one. 3. Ect. You get the point...Now sit back in your easy chair or wherever you choose to watch the race from and listen to FOX and their announcers including DW or tune them out and listen to MRN. It really doesn't matter. If we all didn't enjoy racing then we wouldn't be watching or listening. So, get on with the show. What does it matter??????? As I said in an earlier post, just be glad that they are broadcast.

Well i like him...Larry Mac on the other hand needs a lesson in correct grammar....if he says rpms one more time i'm going to jump into the the tv and throttle him.....lol. :p

;) Hah! I have read every word of this thread. Amazed is what I am at this point.
Question: Would you guys rather have a silk-shirted dandy from the press box at YANKEE stadium?
What we have is a bonafide WINNER! DW has done pretty much of it all and is willing to tell about it in clear, knowlegeable terms. With a good southern drawl.
What more can we ask of FOX? Thank GOD we do not have a Sports Person that knows a little about lots of sports and that includes the race at hand! If that happens you guys will have more to complain about.
Nascar is mostly for us common folk, having DW speaking to us makes me feel at home.
The aarons comercials are getting to us all. Maybe they will read this and try to change them up some.

Betsy

Here's the simple solution for all of this....
If ya dont like to hear DW, put it on mute!!!!! Easy as that...
Fox isn't gonna pull him off TV just because a few of ya dont like him, so get over it... he's there and its where he's gonna stay.. BOOGITY, BOOGITY, BOOGITY!!!!

I've been a fan of Michael Waltrip for awhile, so I also became a fan of Darrell towards the latter part of his career.

However, I stand by the fact that I think he would make a great pit announcer, but not a racing broadcaster.

When ESPN and some of those stations used to hand him a microphone in the garage area and ask him to go do interviews, he did some of the best interviews with drivers i had ever or still ever seen. He was funny, and he got drivers to break out of their racing profile and have some fun with the interview.

I was willing to see what he could do sitting in the booth, but all it has made me do is miss the days we had the Ned Jarrett-Benny Parsons-Buddy Baker mix. They were a panel of experts that really knew what they were talking about and tried to make what fans were seeing on the track more understandable to us sitting at home.

DW does more speculation than he does description, he does more fooling than he does announcing, and some of the phrases he comes up with make me wonder what the heck he is talking about. Everything always seems like it's some private joke that nobody gets. For example, he'll sing a few lines of some country song, and even the announcers next to him don't know what correlation to the race he's trying to make.

I like DW, I think he's a great guy. But someone please take him out of the booth. Put him in a truck or have him announce from the pit road or garage area, or heck, leave him down in the Hollywood hotel. But please, make the pain stop.

And while we're at it, could someone please hand Larry McReynolds a grammar book??? Please???

Mikey is good by himself, but with Kenny Schrader & Johnny Benson...I LMAO everytime I watch Inside WC.

I like DW and I think he explains a lot of stuff that is informative to people who are not close followers of the sport.
I like his southern accent and I think he just really likes what he is doing and he does like to talk.
I get a kick out of Boogity, Boogity, Boogity.

LMAO

I have the volume turned up, but i couldn't tell you what any of them say. I kinda like DW even though I do not pay attention to him. After all, I tune in for the race, not the commentary.

What annoys me is when they go to the cut away car and explain what a driveshaft or coil spring does.
