Is the 43-1 points system too simple?

...., IMO. The fact that Kenseth is 2nd in points and could miss the Chase while Kurt Busch is 27th in points and locked in irks me a little.

People say "Aw , don't worry that'll never happen. " That's not the point . The fact that it COULD happen , is a travesty and would make the sport a joke.

to this i would add, i don't care for the 1 point for leading a lap, never have liked it, chase or pre-chase. i'm ok with the 1 point for leading the most laps. put that bonus money back out there for leading at halfway.
I agree. When backmarkers can stay out for a lap to lead under yellow and gain a bonus point it's kind of silly.

remember just a few years back, team mates would almost come to a complete stop to allow a team car to lead a lap

If you're a car who could contend for a championship, I could see it. But it's just stupid that the backmarkers do it. They're probably trying to get all the points they can for some end-of-year prize fund based on points standings or some bull****.

The hardest thing about the points system is trying to keep drivers and teams from taking advantage of loopholes. Since qualifying "is" part of the race it should also be counted in, and awarded a point value. There should be more of an incentive to qualify well including bonus points for laps lead, winner, and I'd add in a passing point system awarded to the top movers during the race. Point's should definitely matter, wins should be the ultimate goal.

I dont think this current chase & points format will stick around for long. Not because Brian likes to change everything, but because everything is experimental right now. The COT to the Gen 6. The ride height & spoiler adjustments. The chase formats & now the eliminator format. Its all in the experimental phase to see which results in the best racing & draws in the most fans. Prepare for more changes.

and I'd add in a passing point system awarded to the top movers during the race.

qualifying is a joke enough. but if you start giving points for top movers, then why would you try to qualify up high. top teams could start 43rd each race and get a bunch of points at the end.

I think the old one was stupid ... just sayin.. 5,3,1? Stupid...
How is that stupid? It made each spot towards the front of the field worth more than each spot towards the back of the field, which is how it works in every other form of motorsports I can think of. Do you really think the difference between 38th and 43rd is worth five points? I tend to view those DNFs and whatnot as just one big clump that really can't be differentiated.

Because who cares?! Lol

Sad to learn , after watching 30 plus years of racing , that intense point battles , like top 35 in owner points , were just bull**** . That racing back in the pack for points , rather than contending for wins was just 'stupid '. That heros like Junie Dunleavy and Dave Marcis had no business being out there on the track . Live and learn my friends , live and learn.

Yes, this is supposed to be the highest level of stock car racing. Like the Olympics or the Super Bowl. The fact that every week, the field is half filled with cars that don't have any chance or intention to win the race is disgusting. I'm sure glad that the half front of any Sprint Cup race are some of the best race car drivers in the world and the back half is guys "just trying to make a buck". Because in my world class racing I really want to see slobs just trying to get by. We should let anybody race in the Kentucky Derby or play in the Masters because everybody deserves to make a dollar.

?????
ya know better kevin ....bad analogy ....lotsa horses / golfers never make those 2. .....after lifetime of work tryin !
same w/ racers/ owners in nascar.

anybody who thinks brian sat down at breakfast an came up w/ current points system / chase system ......is smokin whacko weed !
they ran @#$%^&*()_ algo programs thru lotsa folks ta arrive at this .
brian just signed off on it . ......as did rest of exec team. is what it is ---'14 .

on flip side.....betcha their folks in charlotte submit this thread ....an others like it ....this fall/winter....
lookin at new ideas.........before new '15 rules come out .

IMO if you havent been around to see every points system since '75, you dont get a say. But people who dont pay taxes get to vote for the president, so everything is screwed already.

It's just a formula, qualifying would be worth more out of the box. Passing points would only count if a driver passed X amount of cars. If a driver started 43rd and moved up during the race and finished 15th that would represent 28 gained positions divided by 3 would be 9 points. On the other hand, the top ten qualifying positions could be awarded points starting with the pole of say 14 points and so on back to tenth.

Sandbagging, has always been a part of racing and I suspect it always will be. I'm not saying it would be perfect but those more learned than I should be able to come up with the final solution on awarding points.

Risk/reward. Starting at the back you have a good chance of getting caught up in someone else's wreck. They could start 1st and finish first with max of 48 points or they could start 43rd and finish 1st with max of 48 points.

The biggest problem I have with the Chase and now the new system is that it renders the points standings and points differentials of the "regular season" inconsequential. Simply put, the concept of points being reset..
