Is the COT a fail?

Yes, I miss the days when Cup cars fit the same templates as the the "Showroom Cars" but Cup racing is no longer about what manufactuar makes the best or fastest car, it's about Entertainment.

Can you imagine the whines and cries of todays fans if you inserted a Dominate car like perhaps Bill Elliots ThunderingBird into a race season? There'd probably be lawsuits, picketing in the parking lot and LOTS of Empty seats.

It's 2012 don't forget the past, but it is time to move on.

That's what I said .There isn't enough space on this board to handle the crying.

To be fair Nascar has been in tough spot for years, when it comes to remaining stock.

In the days of simply adding rolls bars, and putting sheet metal over the headlight cavities. Even when setting those bodies on a preferred chassis or frame it was easy and natural.
The era remaining stock appearing was so much simpler. Detroit was on board producing newer, bigger, better power.

But then Nascar muscle tech, lost the Detroit muscle in the 70s and the divorce, or divide has just become more pronounced over time.
The COT spec car was inevitable, just time at work.

Nascar could go back to more stock appearing, but the Australian V8 car will be the look. I would think unibodies wouldn't work from a safety standpoint on super speedways.

As for templates, I would think a return to allowing 3 year old late model bodies, maybe even up to 5 years would be needed. To keep cost in line, and to help all brands remain competitive. If one brand builds an Aero-Lemon there are still older bodies available.

There is a better way than the current COT, but it is complicated an unintended consequences is a major risk.

Brand loyalty, a less generic look that's all good, but this is not the 60, or 70s most fans now align to driver first. Tying a superstar to the Aero up and downs of his brand mght have a more negative affect than being generic.

Maybe it's me but anymore I have trouble telling car brands just driving down the road, most look about the same with few exceptions.

Back in the 60's 70's and somewhat into the 80's you could tell brands apart even at night driving down the road.
