Kiante
Team Owner
Wow, this is some cool stuff on a legend that did so much with so little. There is a reason why we love the small teams and I missed out on a chance to watch JD, but I will definitely pick this up when it's released.
Long story short, JD ran into the wall at the end of the backstretch, the fastest part of the course. At that time, there was no chicane or gravel trap. What Happened?
Its on youtube. Look up Tommy Kendalls crash there to.What Happened?

The chicane was added so drivers would use the brakes farther from the end of the straghtaway. Any resulting paint-trading would also happen further from the wall. That's the purpose of most chicanes.

I think it was the same corner a few months before. Broke his legs.
Yep. Car looked like this. The stuff you forget. I remember Kendalls crash. He's a tall guy, if I remember correctly.
I was travelling to see my folks in Arkansas..... listening on MRN..... I still remember the broadcast ...........My brother and I were at Watkins Glen the day we lost JD at the end of the backstretch. We were sitting in turn #2 @ the bottom of the hill. That was in the days before they had the big screens at the track and fan's handheld scanners were not the norm. We didn't have a clue what truly happened until much later in the race. A sad day indeed.
It's interesting that McDuffie's cause of death (basilar skull fracture) was the same as Earnhardt's, almost 10 years later.
The fact that it took as long as it did to make the HANS device a requirement is truly a black eye for NASCAR.
Very much like Schraeder and Sr.When Jimmy Means looked in the car you knew it was very, very bad.

Yeah Kenny was pretty much in shock....... and it showed......His face was completely flushed that day. After his interview, I knew it wasn't a good sign.
