CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Could four-time Cup series champion Jeff Gordon step away from full-time competition after the 2014 season?

Maybe, Gordon said.

It might be a good bet if he were to celebrate another series championship in the season finale at Homestead, Fla.

"I will call it quits - I'll tell you that right now - right there on the spot," Gordon, 42, said during the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour. "I think that would be a great way to go out.

"But I know if we did that, I'd be thinking, 'Maybe we could do it again next year.' So, don't hold me to that. I'm jokingly serious."

As Gordon has gotten older, he said it's not uncommon to take time each season to consider his future.
"I've done everything I've wanted to do in sport. I want to go out feeling good about who I am and what I'm doing and being competitive," he said. "Then you have a bad year and your back is hurting and you say things like" it might be my final year.

I believe his contract ends in 2016, but then again it's Jeff Gordon so he can leave whenever he feels like it.

He has always said that he will retire when he is no longer competitive. NASCAR is changing it's rules so much he is probably letting the younger guys inherit the ridiculousness rather than him dealing with it.

Yeah... well any excuse for not being competitive anymore works right? lol jk.. I actually don't wana see him retire yet.. I've come to like him... I think his retirement marks a new era of NASCAR.. it will be weird without him in the field.. but the fact that it doesn't seem to make an opening for others to win means it may be time.

The last thing I wanna see is him go out like Petty, Jarrett, Bobby L. or Burton. Just being a wheelholder. He is still a threat to win every race and everyone can agree that Lady Luck has not been on his side much of the last 3 years. He has shown that he is much faster later in the year than in the regular season so maybe this new points format will treat him well

It's still racing and I watch it but it's not real total racing anymore, It's mostly just a big gimmick. That's probably what bothers him most. The instant gratification generation that wants to be constantly stimulated to the max is never going to come over to nascar no matter how gimmicky Brain makes it.

I'd think after 2015 makes sense that way Chase Elliott has 2 seasons in Nationwide under his belt.

He already lost 2 championships to format changes. If it happens again under Brians new vision, I wouldn't blame him for walking away.

if the 24 car was open would carl leave for it??? if I was him I would.

I doubt HMS would replace Gordon with a driver Carl's age. I believe Chase Elliott is already under contract with HMS as a development driver.

I have a feeling it'll be Chase in the 24 car in a couple years.

DTEH is only under contract through this coming year. Axalta through 2016. It will depend on his back and if the bad luck continues. He was good in last years chase, but still only one win all year.

If the plan is for Chase Elliott to ultimately replace Gordon in the 24, I don't think Gordon would do anything to harm the HMS organization by leaving before Chase is ready. I'd say he hangs around until the end of 2015 at the earliest.

He may no longer be a consistent top 5 driver but he is still competitive and I'd say a top 10 driver.

Confirmed: Under this format, Dale Earnhardt Jr. would have won the 2013 Sprint Cup title.

Hey DPK, Brian found the magic format you've always wanted! ;)

After watching Matt winning 7 races in the ride he passed up in 2011, I doubt he could resist. Secondly, there isn't a driver in the garage who would pass up a Hendrick ride.

Besides, Carl would be good filler until Rick gets his hooks into Larson.

I think Larson is busy for the next 7 years or so

The young couple in my avatar is the new face of Nascar and the sports future, I hope they do what they can to preserve it.
From what I heard and read today the driver half of the couple in your avatar is ape-ass upset and crying about the future of nascar, so I don't think the future of nascar has anything to do with them.

Werent you one of the folks that was unhappy about some of the same changes Kyle was ???

I would love it a champ with no wins, Brian is a genius.

I'm thinking this is Gordon's way of venting about the insane championship changes without actually saying that it pisses him off.

I may be reading his comments wrong since I'm biased, but that's the way I read them.

After all that's going on in NASCAR I'd consider retiring too. Specially if you're an old timer like Gordon.

He's one of the few that has seen this sport go from good too great too bad. No one has been screwed more than Gordon when it comes to championships.

Anyway, I'm ok if he retires after this year. I'm looking for a reason not to give two damns about this sport as it is, this would definitely smooth the process.
