“I didn’t say I’m retiring,” Gordon said, according to the story. “There’s a reason I didn’t say this is it, that I said that this is my last final, full season. I want to leave that open. If I’m healthy and feel like I can get in a good opportunity to have some fun as well as be competitive, it doesn’t matter what it is, I’d like to do it.”

I noticed he avoided the term retirement in his announcement and I took that to mean he will continue running the 500 because he qualifies as a past champion (a pension plan kinda deal). I wonder what other races he might want to run.
 
I hope JG does what Rusty Wallace did and leaves for good.

Despite not wanting a retirement party thrown each weekend, Gordon -- who refuses to even use the word "retirement" -- has enjoyed all of the memories coming in from fans in person and on social media.

I'd like to see him just show up and race unannounced at a random race next year, like Martinsville. They could just have one car made specially for that race, and just come in and race from back to front and dominate it all, and then leave again...only to show up next year at a random race....

At least DW stayed in the sport full-time until he hung it up for good, even though he wasn't very good the last 6 or 7 years of his career. Mark Martin was the Brett Favre of NASCAR there for awhile. Took him about 9 years to retire.
 
One of the things you hear stick and ball players say when coming back from a layoff is that they need to get their timing back. Skills erode quickly and even an accomplished driver like JG may think he is as good as ever but in reality has lost a step.

I could be wrong but I got the impression he didn't want to run any superspeedways again. Didn't he even say it was his last D500?

I thought I read something like that. Other than Micheal Waltrip most drivers don't seem to have a great love for RP tracks so I would be surprised to see JG run one. I doubt he would race at places like Bristol or Darlington either but I could see some cookie cutters and the Brickyard

I think the Brickyard is definitely one he would go for.
 
They took out the part time loop hole so a driver can't win a race and be in the chase. oops back to the drawing board.

Nascar has let the Jeanie out of the box with making exemptions for drivers making the chase yet not attempting to compete in each race. The only person I would have exempted is Kurt as he should have been racing anyone. Hambone and Vickers? To bad so sad.

Anything can happen but it is highly unlikely he would win in a one off scenario. You have spotter and crew you are not used to and something you have no done for a while either. A might tall order.
 
Injury and illness shouldn't be tolerated ... no Chase exemption for weaklings.

Going on national tv to explain your naked sobbing and to out your ex-date as a trained CIA assassin is good. Top that up with a restraining order. You're golden.
 
Yeah he's said the risk/reward just doesn't make sense for him to run any more plate races.

Also, he kind of admitted that it may be too much of a hassle to even run period due to having to find a ride, and put together a competitive enough team to go out there and win. The guy isn't going to log laps if he does race again, he wants to win.

Not just the active tracks. He also won at Rockingham and North Wilkesboro. He's won a points paying race at every track that he's raced on in the cup series except Kentucky. That's saying something. Hopefully he'll collect Kentucky this year.

Gordon has avoided referring to his decision as 'retirement' as he intends to remain active in motorsport in non-racing roles.

But he underlined that he did not expect to race in NASCAR's top series again after the 2015 finale at Homestead in November.

"I think the chances are pretty good that Homestead will be the last race that you see me in," Gordon said.

"I don't know that for a fact. But I know that I'm not going to come back and do a part-time schedule."

If he does race again, the big question would be who would he race for. HMS already has 4 cars.

Looks like that was in January,might have had time to think on it now.
