Jerry Punch was on his weekly appearance on a Knoxville sports station and just announced Martin Truex and NAPA will be joining JGR as a 4th team once all the details are ironed out.

Rusty said that was all the talk in the garage yesterday. I was surprised he said it.

From Jayski today.

BUT: According to a tweet by NASCAR.com's Kenny Bruce, "J.D. Gibbs did everything but rule out 4th Cup team for JGR. 'Going from 2 to 3 was so difficult. ... I don't see it.' ".
AND: Sporting News' Bob Pockrass reports, "Joe [Gibbs] said he's devoted to Toyota & MWR & supports them, said he has no idea what's happening and had no talks [about] 4th team w/NAPA-Truex"(9-23-2013)

So between Thursday morning and sometime this weekend Napa, jgr, and Truex threw some type of deal together? Yeah, not buying it. Could it happen? Yes, but I doubt in that time frame.

Other than one guy on Twitter posting the same thing I see nothing more about this. I'd think the NASCAR media would be all over this story.

Gene Haas hammered out the details and will let coach Gibbs know when the deal is done. :D

If this is true and this deal happens then this is was put together by Toyota. It would chap Toyota's ass to see one of their major sponsors jump **** to a Ford or Chevy teams. My guess is that Toyota called NAPA thursday morning asking them if they would take stay with Toyota if they could put a deal together with Gibbs. Why? Because if Napa jumps ship to another manufacturer that would be one less toyota team and one extra Chevy or Ford team.

I wonder if he's taking the #56 with him? 02 or 81 would also make sense, as JGR has run those numbers in the past whenever fielding a 4th car.

I've still seen nothing on this from any media member. Has there been any mention of this from anyone else? This news would have been every bit as big as NAPA leaving in the first place.

Bigger , in my opinion . They might go from hero to goat.

The only thing that doesnt seem to be completely false about this is that its coming from Jerry Punch. And thats ust because of how long he has been in the sport and the solid reputation he has. He wasnt been one to needlessy cause drama in the past.

Anyone know what he said ? Maybe he was just reporting on the rumor , or an unnamed source .

Some people will see it as NAPA going from goat to hero by not letting the innocent guy hang in the wind. I hope the same social medium people who hounded NAPA after Richmond hound them to keep a NAPA car on the track.

I agree , but it may look bad if this move has been in the works for three months and their split from MWR was financial not moral.

They were on year one of a three year contract, prior to the Richmond fiasco. I do not think hopping teams was a consideration. There were legal obligations that would have been subject to civil courts, and as you noted it would have been a PR nightmare. I do not appreciate NAPA leaving MWR but imo there in nothing to indicate they would be so unethical.

If it's true it would be very big news, and also a continuation of the Richmond incident story. That may be a reason why they are waiting to make an announcement.

If they announced it now it would keep the Richmond incident story going, and I doubt NAPA or anyone involved wants that.
Perhaps they're waiting until the end of the season so the dust can settle on the Richmond incident before they make an announcement... if it's true.

Sure. By then we'll all have forgotten. :D

I know no one is going to forget Richmond. But making an announcement now keeps the Richmond thing going, when it's just started to settle down.

Think about it though. How many times do we actually wait for an announcement these days. I'm talking about anything of substance. Sure we may wait for an announcement for a Big A$$ HDTV screen in Texas or a lessor known Nationwide driver making his Cup debut in Charlotte but the big stories always come out ahead of any announcement. In today's age every reporter wants to be first. I simply have to wonder how much there is to this story at all other than this Thread. I guess I'm just skeptical.

I see your point and I agree. If it's true you'd think we'd be hearing something more.

But at the same time if I were NAPA, I wouldn't want to make it known right now. The Richmond incident story is just now starting to settle down. Announcing it now would whip it all up again.

Just a theory.

Imo speculation keeps a story going more than fact. In many cases a person can at least slow down a big talker "yeah I did it etc. so what" and the talkers become dengergized, the mystery makes it hotter, more interesting etc.

If I was NAPA I would broadcast my intentions now and move on from the undesirable situation.

Maybe they feel obligated to the 55 until the decals come off in late November. If they do the move, I hope they offer new jobs to those displaced.

But all of this is just bored (on my part) banging on a keyboard, I dont have a clue about what is really going to happen.

this may explain yo question last week----why didn't napa just pull logo off truex car these last 10 chase races ?

what better way fer napa ta clean up public image than w/ coach gibbs ?

all tha pieces are already in place......truex / napa / toyota.

plus it gives mwr a financial out fer 2014 on 3rd team.

I think every track that needs a title sponsor for a race, nascar, and any team that has room is courting NAPA right now.

One thing to consider is how 5 hour ended up at MWR. RCR was too expensive, and some media people say MWR gets millions less if they don't make the chase. Some are suggesting NAPA paid around $12 million for a whole season, then pay 3 or 4 million more for making the chase. No top team will go for that. Perhaps Toyota is doing something to accommodate NAPA to keep their stable from shrinking.
