I wonder what Chase ratings will look like with this season looking like it'll be a duel between Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth for the Vanilla Cup.

Both drivers are having career seasons and look better than ever. But I can't imagine it'll be a championship battle that draws people to the couch like Tony and Carl or BradK and Jimmie did.

The way JJ is running, he could make the chase almost meaningless.. Could win every race left.

Jimmie's had it made at quite a few mile and a half tracks this year but hasn't been able to seal the deal. He would be sitting with 6 wins if it wasn't for the 2 restart issues he had, plus he had an opportunity to make it an interesting finish at Michigan before he blew a tire with like 5 to go. I think this is the best he's ever been early in the season...but he usually flourishes late, so it'll be interesting to see how the Chase shakes out for him.

Don't think we will be talking Kenseth for long in the chase. Last week not only Jimmy goofed, but McMurray in a second tier car was catching him, he won by pit crew. Eight more to go before the chase anyway and five drivers who's average finish is better than him in front.Without the chase he is 118 points behind, almost three races. Boyer Edwards and Harvick are within striking distance at least when the reset comes. Right now they would both get a 12 point head start over Boyer, six over Harvick and 9 over Edwards. Not much in my opinion when you can earn 48 a race.

Aaw, damn!!! Y'all are right, it's not a forgone conclusion. I forgot about Joey Logano!!! I read somewhere that he was doing better than every other driver in NASCAR this year with his 0 wins. Silly me. How could I forget?

it was pretty funny when he plastered the wall, I hope to tell ya. If you read the race thread you will crack up. Bread Crumbs showed up later.

We need some crazy dudes involved in the chase. Either Busch, Kevin, Kez or Tony could spice things up.

Listening to JJ in his post 'wreck them to win' interview almost made me puke. "I don't think I made a single mistake today". WTF? I guess taking out 2 of the faster cars was intentional. The freaking guy didn't even admit he caused the whole thing with his patented 'jerk the wheel hard' blocking move.

I sure hope Ambrose remembers that one. In fact, I wish it was Kurt running inside him. JJ knows that flinch move causes the other driver to react before thinking, and after that I would never let off to keep JJ from hooking himself into the infield.

I heard that  Although I thought he said he didn't make one bad move. No matter :)

Kenseth doesn't stand a chance in the chase if he/TRD/JGR don't improve on their consistancy 'cause if they don't, I'm not sure the 1.5 mile tracks can save him and it's not like the #48 team struggles on them.

I thought that line; "I don't think I made a single mistake ..." was classic. Must remember that and find a place to use it in future discussions.... :XXROFL:

So that is what he said. I had a few beer so I guess I was kind of foggy :D

Not really. What Jimmie actually said was, "I don't think I made a bad move tonight. I'm pretty proud of that."

I made the mistake of trusting fenderbumper, who for the second time in successive weeks, has misquoted a driver. Hopefully I'll learn from that and want to go n record by saying, other than that, I don't think I made a single mistake .... but I was wrong. :D

Dude, why is the difference between
I don't think I made a bad move tonight."
and
"I don't think I made a single mistake today"
making you weep?

lol classic whizzer right there.

Personality cult or ratings mean nothing to me and it shouldn't, it is just who drives the best. JJ and Matt both are winning races, and driving hard that is good enough for me.

I would love to see Harvick upset them both, under the old system I would be more confident, they have the consistency. But they dont have the domination capabilities, in the chase you need wins and maximum point races. I just dont think an RCR car can do that, strong but not dominate

despite the dominance of jimmie and the strength kenseth has show, I see a bunch of racers that will make the chase interesting. looks like there are more hard chargers than cruisers.

1Jimmie Johnson
2Clint Bowyer
3Carl Edwards
4Kevin Harvick
5Dale Earnhardt Jr.
6Matt Kenseth
7Kyle Busch
8Greg Biffle
9Kurt Busch
10Tony Stewart
11Martin Truex Jr
12Kasey Kahne

Same here.

Like I said in another thread, I don't see Matt being a factor for the actual championship. He'll probably win like three races in the Chase, but he'll also have three bad races. That's the way his season has been.

I don't think we are giving Matt and that team enough credit. I think they might be a top contender in the chase.

I doubt it. In 18 races, Matt has four Top 5s. How many wins does he have? Four. With Matt it's either he's winning or he's wrecking/blowing up.

I foresee Toyota fixing the blowing up problem before the chase begins. But, at what cost to the performance of the engine is questionable.

Seems like last week folks around here were advocating extra points for leading laps (to encourage their drivers to try harder ). Only problem in this week Jimmie would have amassed enough bonus points to close out the season.

I haven't seen the updated year-to-date driver ratings but going into Daytona Jimmie and Kenseth were 1-2 at 114.2 and 114.0 while the third best (Kyle Busch) was all the way down at 101.9.

Matt has three DNFs, a couple of blowups while running in the Top 5 and the bogus DNF at Bristol when Gordon's tire blew while racing for the lead. TRD hasn't had an engine problem in a while now and their cars are still fast. Jimmie has never had a season without a DNF; he's actually had seven with at least three DNFs. He has none right now. Eventually that will regress towards the mean and I expect the championship to tighten up.

kenseth: except for his expected weaknesses, he has been as dominating as jimmie, but with "bad luck". come chase time, I look for him to be as calculating as the last nascar champion from Wisconsin.

johnson: sure would like to see this team and driver choke. but i'm not holding my breath. i'll admit it: they are damn good.

clint, kevin, jr.: a championship by any of them would make me happy.

carl, kyle, greg, and kurt: no love from me. unless it beats jimmie.

tony, truex, and kahne: tony-shut up and drive, again. truex-only if mikey isn't at the banquet. kahne-you'll get one, after your teammates retire.

kez is the only one sitting outside looking in that I care to see in the chase. mainly for the interviews after his highs and lows.

jmo

Somebody in 6th place dominating? all this hoopla over a driver that just dropped into 6th place..what is this a toyota drivers convention? sorry fellas, in jimmy's championship years, he averaged 76 points ahead when the chase was over. for those wondering why the ratings for the chase have been falling, a couple of years since it started, the last race was the decider..not so much with Jimmy 5 time.

Technically he was the last NASCAR champ from Wisconsin...

I know you mean Kulwicki, just having a laugh. :lilangel:

If people think Matt is hot right now, just wait until Matt and Jason have some more time to mesh. I have a feeling that after Matt retires, he'll look back on his Roush days with a little regret.

Knowing how the 48 performs in the last 10 races and seeing his results as of late, he is going to blow out the competition. I think when Jimmie surpasses 7 championships you will see Earnhardt nation flip out.

He surely has a shot at seven, but so did Jeffy. I will not be flipping out if he does, he earn them. hell will freeze before someone wins five in a row again. if he doesn't win it this year it will take something like Tony did.

I wonder if Mark Martin regrets spending his entire career at Roush while Hendrick, Gibbs and Childress were winning championships. I agree with Fender - Kenseth will wish he hadn't stayed with Roush. Kenseth was second fiddle to Edwards at Roush. Everyone else on that team is there to support Carl Edwards since Carl has all the sponsors and brings in the money.

I still don't get all the Matt hoopla. He has a better average finish the last three years at Roush than he does now. Had 3 wins each at Roush his last two seasons. Had a year end 4th a 7th and a 5th at Roush. hell now he is in 6th with one more win and a long way to go with his three worst tracks coming up. He isn't in any better position to win the championship at this stage than he ever was.

Whether he's 1st or 10th don't mean jack come chase time, thanks to this great points system that only awards bonus points for wins and none for points position. With 4 wins in the bag already, Matt will be at or near the top come chase time.
