Jimmie Johnson wants in-race reviews from NASCAR

CONCORD, N.C. -- Jimmie Johnson called for major changes to the way NASCAR officiates races on Wednesday, four days after two high-profile incidents at Richmond International Raceway continued to be the talk of NASCAR.

Johnson proposed halting a race with a red-flag to review any questionable circumstances, similar to an NFL-style replay timeout.

"In my opinion, if there is a question they don't know, they need to stop the race immediately," Johnson said during a promotional event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. "Red flag, pits are closed, figure it out and make the best judgment they can. Because trying to go back on Monday or Tuesday to fix the situation is just too much, and then I learn something about a ripple effect."

He's got a point on waiting two days later though.

They need to hash it out as quick as possible.

I dont see what he said about throwing a red flag out to sort things out as ludicrious. Its right on point.

They already do it to sort the lucky dog and the wave arounds so what's the grievance?

Also, NASCAR uses the black flag too willy nilly so this would fix that.

He does have a point about not waiting so long, but throwing a red flag? Hell, people are alreadysaying 500 mile races are too long, could you imagine how much longer a 500 mile race would take if they throw a red flag every time? We'd have three-day races on our hands.

If you take every accident that happens into account though. I was thinking more only the restarts.

That shouldn't take too long to determine whether you jumped it or not.

Does that include delaying the start of a race when a TV crew catches Chad in Jimmies window telling him to "back it into the wall if you win".
 
This would open a huge can of worms. I agree with VaDirt, it could conceivably make the races too long. Then, I could see time limits coming --- we run for 500 miles or 3 hours -- whichever comes first. Too many variables.

Cans been opened Ma'm the worms are out and they ain't ever going back in, NASCAR let the media force it into a mistake that it may never recover from.
 
NASCAR typically takes care of things quickly during a race (parking a car for a lap or two, stop and go, etc.). Johnson's suggestion about Bowyer wouldn't work since NASCAR couldn't prove anything during a red flag (and hasn't proved anything in several days). I've only witnessed one race where NASCAR changed the results of a finish (Ricky Rudd spinning out Davey Allison for a win). They penalized Rudd several positions within minutes of the race ending.

I think that we are already going to head in the direction of a 3 hour race in the future. These races are slowly getting built around the television schedule and I'd bet that the new television contract is going to address the length of some of these races. Just a guess.
 
Its not a bad idea but people have a point about how it would make races too long.
 
How many challenges should a team get??? If the challenge is wrong, does NASCAR move that team to the back or penalize them five laps to keep the process honest?

Johnson needs to pull his pants up and get back to driving the car...
 
Ya know in other sports, player misconduct is punishable by being thrown out of the game. IF NASCAR stops a race due to some form of cheating in an effort to manipulate the outcome of the race, throw that mothafukka out. Take all of his earned points that race away plus an additional points stripping. Fines don't mean **** in this sport. Make an example out of him. YOU shoot yourself in the foot, YOU and your whole team suffers. Teams and drivers will eventually get the idea and race a good hard race. Sure, label NASCAR as a bad guy for it but it will clean everything up and get everyone focusing on how to make their car setups, packages, etc... better without ignoring the rules.

Wow - I really don't think Rudd deserved that.

 
yeah....i see time limits comin too. ----why? $8 billion reasons come 2015. ha!

restarts----tv does digital 1st down lines in fb....why not box ?
combine that w/ side-by-side car tech #'s viewers can see ? speed/rpm's/brake/etc

actually think races in long term will look mo like all-star race....w/ planned pauses/adv breaks....much like nfl.
 
Im not a fan of the 48. But Johnson has a great idea here. I actually think this is a very good thing. I dont think it will make races too long because I believe he is talking about questionable things. Speeding on pit road, lug nuts, etc are not questionable. Its not every race that these very questionable things happen. With Richmond having two, possibly three is a very very rare circumstance IMO. Jumping restarts, intentional spins.... that doesnt happen a whole lot. Just like you dont see replays for false starts in football, you would have the race stopped for speeding on pit road. As long as its left to major things, I think it can be very good.

This seems like a fine idea as long as the reviews were left for "major" instances. We don't need reviews for speeding on pit road, or having too many crewmen over the wall, but a review would definitely come in handy to decide whether a restart was jumped, as just one example. I don't think an in-race review would've helped much during the race on Richmond, since nothing seemed immediately suspicious; all of the evidence against MWR seemed to come together after the race had concluded.
