Spencer, Compton lead final day of NASCAR testing: Jimmy Spencer’s first
trip to Las Vegas with his new team was a productive one. Stacy Compton
served notice that he will be a top contender when the NASCAR Busch
Series visits Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Sam’s Town 300 on March
1. Spencer was the fastest of the five NASCAR Winston Cup teams testing
at the 1.5-mile superspeedway on Thursday. Spencer toured the tri-oval
in 32.61 seconds (165.593 mph). It was his first time out at LVMS with
his new Ultra Motorsports team. ...Rookie contender Tony Raines was
second on the speed chart Thursday with a lap at 33 seconds (163.636
mph). Raines was followed by Ted Musgrave (33.08, 163.241), Kenny
Wallace (33.10, 163.142) and rookie Brandon Ash (33.80, 159.763).
Compton, in his second year with ST Motorsports, waited until the end of
his two-day test to turn his fast time. Compton’s lap late in the day of
32.80 seconds (164.634 mph) was the fastest of all Busch cars on
Thursday and was second only to Kevin Harvick’s 32.75-second lap on
Wednesday. All times were taken on cars set up for race conditions and
