Johali's Rate the Cup race --- Talladega

4/10

Mostly a typical Gen 7 superspeedway race, which I’ve reached my breaking point with.

Race quality is probably a 2/10. One extra point for some fun pit stops in stage 1. One extra point for my favorite driver finally breaking through to their first win, and a deserved one too. He kept it smart for the entire last stage.

Total = 4/10. No on the poll.

It was a terrible race (IMO) but I’m still completely stoked because my boy won. I haven’t followed a driver for years but I liked this kid’s style from the beginning! Great celebration too!

I enjoy rating races (long live the memory of RF's @Johali), but I try to only rate the ones I can watch in their entirety without any disruptions, or at least something like 90% of the race.

6 - typical reasons for a pack race where gas mileage dominated the lengthy stage 1. Once they got to actual racing it bit half the field in the big wreck, left a more manageable group to baby step it to the end.

Part of what I love about a race weekend is to look at the practice and qualifying to kind of anticipate what will happen in the race. Then, races start to take on a narrative if you will....you start to understand who MY guys need to beat. This event had none of that. The strategies were confusing, I don't love wrecks. The end was speedway racing. The winner was over celebrated, and the no hands driving thing was forced. I give it a 5....and yes, before any of you ask....if Hocevar drove for Toyota it would be 256 gadzillion.

4.

I don't recall rating a race this low before but after the quality of the O'Reilly race on Saturday, this was everything racing should not be. Congratulations to Hocevar for a well deserved win, the one bright spot of the day.
