Johnson: I'm Not Reckless, I'm Just Racing Hard

By MIKE BRUDENELL

Detroit Free Press

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- If you haven't noticed, Jimmie Johnson, NASCAR's boy next door, is driving harder and driving his car wider this year.

His tactics have drawn criticism. Some competitors have accused the usually mild-mannered Johnson of spinning other drivers out.

Johnson, who leads the NASCAR Nextel Cup series, has always been considered one of the garage's nice guys. But nice guys don't always finish first, and Johnson has been runner-up for the series title the past two seasons.

Johnson denies that he's a dirty racer, but thinks drivers have gotten far more aggressive on the track this year.

"Yeah, its hard to argue with the numbers," said Johnson, 29. "The competition is closer than it has ever been with the new rules. On top of that, the shorter spoiler makes the cars harder to drive."

The new rules include changes in aerodynamics and tires, and they have made passing something of a gamble, Johnson said.

He'll drive his No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports on Sunday in the Batman Begins 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Qualifying starts at noon today.

"The gear, you really have to commit hard, hard, hard, back to the gas just to get any momentum on the guy in front of you," Johnson said. "I hear a lot of comments from people saying, 'It's not the car's fault because we're driving them,' and I agree with that.

"But in order to make a pass now and get alongside someone, you just have to drive over your head to get the job done. Everyone out there is very talented and has great equipment, and you have to drive above the ability of the car to pass people, which is promoting crashes."

Johnson said he hasn't been affected by criticism that he has caused wrecks this year "because it's not true. I'm not a rough racer. I'm not a disrespected driver in the garage area. There was some bad energy floating around for whatever reason for a short period of time, and it's not the case."

Johnson admits drivers have long memories, particularly if a competitor runs into them.

"It's kind of like if you're in the NFL, and somebody takes a late hit on you when the play is over," Johnson said. "That sticks in your mind and you remember those things.

"When your life is on the line out there in these race cars -- sliding around and you know how hard the wall is and the consequences of crashing when someone takes you out -- it's hard not to forget it."

Johnson won eight races last year and finished fourth in the June race at MIS. With its wide-open spaces, the track is usually fast and free of accidents.

"Michigan is a pretty neat race track," Johnson said. "I like it. It's a cool multi-groove track. I feel that if the car isn't exactly right, if you've got a good driver and a driver who's willing to venture away from the norm a little bit, he can figure out a way to work so he can run some good lap times. I'm looking forward to it."

Johnson was third-fastest in practice Friday at 191.729 m.p.h. Dodge drivers Ryan Newman and Jeremy Mayfield were 1-2, Newman at 192.164, Mayfield at 192.097.

"Practice was good," Johnson said. "The car is running good. The engines are really strong. I think the Lowe's Monte Carlo is going to be in good shape."

After the first practice of the day, Johnson said: "It's driving almost too comfortable. So we're going to make it a little edgier and see if we can get some more speed out of it."

The Hendrick team did, and Johnson improved his speed by more than three miles an hour in the final session.

Johnson won four of the final six races last season, finishing just eight points behind Cup champion Kurt Busch. He started 2005 strongly, winning the Bud Shootout at Daytona and the Cup race in Las Vegas, and finishing second at the California and Atlanta speedways. He placed third at Texas in April.

Since the Texas race, Johnson ended up 15th, 20th, seventh and 40th before winning the Coca-Cola 600 at Concord, N.C., near Charlotte. He finished sixth last week at Pocono.

"I'm happy to see that through the slow times we've had, we've still been able to get top 10s," Johnson said. "We won at Charlotte. We've been competitive and maintained the points lead."

Johnson isn't making excuses for his forceful driving this season. He thinks it's all part of competing under pressure at the top level of the sport.

"You've got to understand our mental state in a race car," Johnson said. "Life's on the line, living your dream, racing against our heroes, racing in the biggest sport in the world.

"That's the challenge racers have always had -- to balance that and stay smart and composed inside the car mentally."

Heres my opinion;Hes still young to nascar and his talents are skittish, BUT he is the leader in points for the playoffs. Its like the mouse hiding from the cat for the cheese crumbs. He's Running scared hoping to finish better than his proven 2nd place.Even as rookie of the year.Dude: I say relax and injoy the ride.

Driver Highlights
AS OF 2004:
14 career victories
2004: Won eight races. Finished second in points.
2003: Won at Charlotte and Loudon (twice)
2003: Finished second in points
2002: Runner-up for Winston Cup Rookie of the Year
1998: ASA ACDelco Challenge Rookie of the Yea
Quote by Jeff Gordon:
Johnson's car owner and teammate, defended his protege Tuesday and said Johnson is upset about all the criticism.

"I talked to him and I know he's feeling really beat up over it,'' Gordon said. ``But he really feels like it wasn't his fault. To blame one person in that accident is very unfortunate because I don't think it was any one person.''

To Jimmie, its "racing hard". When it happens to him, he starts to whine and thinks the driver who hit him should be fired.

My problem with Johnson is that he never takes responsibility for his actions. It's always someone else that's responsible.

thats my biggest beef with him....dont act like youve never done anything wrong when someone spins you out.

MIKE BRUDENELL. Just another writer who likes to see his column in print. And there's nothing wrong with that.

JJ has had a lot less on-track problems as some of the others. When can we expect columns about them? Oh wait. They are not leading in points. So why bother to write about them.

Thats my problem with him as well. I don't mind that he has taking out alot of cars this year including my fav driver. I just have a problem with him always blaming the other person. Just come out and say he was in my way and i wrecked him.

Is this your first year as a Tony fan?

I was wondering the same thing. I, too, wished that Jimmie would own up to his mistakes but not everything that he has been involved in this year has been HIS making. ;)

Jimmie has made alot of mistakes and has blamed others for them also but you can also say the same about Tony Stewert who seems to do it bi-weekly.

I'm not a Stewart fan, but I have heard him own up to a few. :angel2: I have yet to hear Johnson take responsibility for any.

^ There's at least one that I can remember. ;) But on the other hand, Stewart has had many many more opportunities. And he'll have many more.

racing up front does lessen the opportunities to run into someone. :)

You know, if Jimmie had a big 3 on his door he'd be 'intimidating' and 'just racing hard', maybe 'rattling someone's cage'. Instead, he's a teammate of NASCAR's most hated driver (Gordon) by the most rabid fans (Junior). I'm no Jeff Gordon fan, but really- Junior wrecked his own teammate and barely anyone made a sound. The bottom line is all the Junior freaks can't cheer for the 'kid' because he's at the back every week, so they figure they can at least be the loudest voice against a guy trying to win a championship.

Does Jimmie screw up, yeah. Has your driver? Yeah. Should Johnson take a little more responsibility? YES- does that make him a dirty driver, just because he doesn't say; "hey, I screwed up"? So, we're working under the assumption that all would be cool if you ran someone over, just so long as you said; "Hey, I know I ruined the Eight Car's day, but I'm sorry."? Come on, NASCAR's most redneck, rose-colored glasses-wearing fans are upset because their boy can't do anything right this season without the Eurys. I'd be pissed too, but I sure as hell wouldn't put a target on a guy for doing his job- winning.

Oh, and before you try to refute Junior fans being able to manipulate NASCAR, please note our Green-White-Checkered rule. Put into effect shortly after the drunken-sunburned-eight-fan-hicks in AlaBAMA virtually rioted because Jeff Gordon edged Junior at Talladega for the win under caution.

...here's to a Championship season- Go Jimmie.

^ Junior did not wreck Mikey on purpose he was trying to bump draft him and Mikey just spun. You don't need to call people from Alabama drunken-sunburned-fan-hicks. I think the Green-White-Checkered rule is a good rule. It makes for better racing and better finishes.

..is what I said, Tony. And I won't apologize. You ever been to a race live? They're the most obnoxious, ridiculous, drunken idiots there. And that's saying a lot considering the environment- where everyone gets that way to some extent.

...but Junior did bump Wallace into the 48 at Talladega this year, causing the 24+ car pile-up that put the spotlight on the 48, and the dreaded Eight-Fan hatred. Jimmie fans saw it coming when he (Jimmie) drove away clean and Junior got caught in it. There's not a Jimmie fan on these forums that didn't shake their haed and think; "Damn. Now they hate us too."

Look you idiot, pull your head out of your ass and take a breath. You can take that comment about Alabama and shove it up your ass.

That rule was being considered before the Jr-Gordon incident. Remeber the incident at Daytona a few years ago when the fans threw seat cushions on the back stretch? You probably don't, you were probably still connected to your mom's left tit.

And Jr caught all kind of hell about wrecking Waltrip. But I guess you worship your idol too much and take after him. He sees and hears only what he wants too....

Couldn't have said it better. :beerbang:

Fergy! I wonder if he knows that you carry a sidearm daily? :) And, we aren't talking about the USMC. Why do people make comments like that about people from a certain place. You think that he hails from New York City? :)

I'm outta here.

The 'hell' was remotely equivalent to what Johnson's received since being the focus of the Eight Fans' hatred? Okay- yeah I'm the one with my head in my ass, alright. As far as the rule change, sure NASCAR was considering it, they're always considering something, but it took the wrath of the Eight Fans (NASCAR's most powerful, rabid community, for no other reason than a last name) that got the rule change finished.

As far as the comment about where I live- it's not New York; maybe you'd like to pull your head out of your ass long enough to look up there at the top right of my posts- Savannah, Georgia. I'm sure being located in the south still isn't good enough for a redneck-jar-head like yourself because it's by way of Columbus, Ohio. Yes, I'm a 'damn Yankee', Bubba. Comments like the one about sucking my 'mom's left tit' don't exactly do anything to refute my opinion about the folks in AlaBAMA, Bubba. You bring the rope, I'll bring the beer. Leave it to someone like you to get that worked up over NASCAR, or some dumb comment about their home state on a freaking internet forum. :)

You have a great day, Bubba. Go beat up a black guy or something, you'll feel better. :)

Its easy to go back an edit your profile to say you are from Georgia and then say I need to pull my head out of your ass. Slick move...you just showed us all that you are a liar.

Also, you have no idea if I'm white, black, Asian, or anything else. Why the racial comment about beating a black man? Are you that ignorant to think that even if I was white I would enjoy that?

And I could care less about NASCAR, but when some waste of DNA starts talking about my home state, I will defend. You stepped over the line with those remarks and should apologize. But then again, being from Columbus, you probably don't know anything about pride and defending your home when a poor ignorant fool makes comments about it.

Enjoy your time here....like I said, you've showed us that you are a liar and nothing from you holds substance. Sort of like Jimmie's complaints on the track....

And now I will step in and tell it to you like this, Kyle48. THIS Bubbette feels that you need to apologize to fergy and everyone else here for showing your ass. Just so you understand this, and I will only say it to you ONCE, there is absolutely NO NAME CALLING of any kind, be it a state, a group of people, a driver or another member. Some of the things you included in your post were definitely uncalled for, out of line, and will not be put up with. You are new to THIS forum (racing-forums.com) and that's how we all get along here. You can either abide by that or move on to another place.

ps........fergy, chill out.

Shoot, and I was just sitting back and enjoying this. :lurk:

Maj, and they say "Don't mess with Texas"...how about Alabama? :beerbang:

I showed my ass?

I won't apologize for anything. Not after that. If Mister Fergy. Would have reacted a little more calmly, I would have even been inclined to delete the entire post, and apologize, however, after the few comments I made, then followed by the ones he made and being physically threatened (I'll reiterate...);

fergy1370 said:

He gets told to 'chill out', and I'm scolded like a kid. I'm not apologizing to anyone except maybe you for mucking up your board, and anyone who was enjoying the slam-fest that was cut short.

This entire discussion was over for me, thus my last post hoping Bubba felt better after his reply. You'll also notice I've been posting in other threads trying to start conversations, and having a great time. If I would have been all over your forums starting fights and B.S. everywhere, then yeah, you should probably ban me, or make me apologize, or just ask me to leave; but I haven't.

So, majestyx I'm sorry for making your forum look bad.

To anyone that was enjoying the thread and not involved, the right thing needed to be done, and that was drop it, which I did last night, but to make it official- it's over; sorry.

Man im glad i just read this thread......just goes to show you what kind of fans Jimmie Johnson has..

Kyle48 or whatever your name is, dont you ever for one second try to compare Jimmie Johnson to the driver of the famed 3 car...he'll never stack up to him...Johnson is a joke in a good car...the reason he keeps wrecking people is not because he's racing hard, its because he's in a fast car and he cant keep it under control.....if he doesnt win the championship this year, he should shut it down and retire...he without a doubt has the best team on the circuit working on his car.

I just started reading this thread today.

The title reads, " Johnson: I'm Not Reckless, I'm Racing Hard".

I knew it would turn into someone bashing the Earnhardt's and their fans.

I didn't know that I was a bad person just because I happened to be a fan of Jimmie Johnson. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. You might want to rethink that statement there Bud. And, as far as comparing Jimmie to Dale Earnhardt, Sr. why not? Everyone else compares EVERY driver to him. EVERY driver at some point is/has been compared to Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and Richard Petty and there is not a damn thing wrong with that. Every fan has their own opinion on who is the best driver past and present. Opinions differ. Deal with it.

i dont think i ever called you a bad person in my statement majesty
