Junyer wins Most Popular Driver

Probably one of the most meaningless titles in Nascar.

It all has to do with stuffing the ballot box.

If I had enough time on my hands I could probably get Jeremey Mayfield the title. :D

Dale Earnhardt just took over for Bill Elliott who won the award 16 times in his career, removed only 2 years by Waltrip in the early '90's. Elliott was a likeable driver and man enough, but he struggled for a few years in the late nineties on his own before signing with Ray and his new DODGE team. He still won the award even with the rise of many of the new drivers and popularity of the sport.
The award in itself is just what it it named. The Most Popular Driver of the year. Most of you cannot stand the fact that he has struggled as a driver, but still wins this award and sells more merchandise than any other driver. Then I say, get off your duff and out vote Juniors fans and put your beloved at the top of the game. Junior inherited many of his fathers fans, and they are not wishy washy fans like many new NA_CAR fans are. They stand behind who they like, through the good and the bad of it all.

Don't really care who wins the award.

Just feel it is not really relevant because of the way the winner is voted on and chosen.

But that is just my opinion

Pitiful response by the Jr naysayers.

Fact is he won the "Most Popular Driver" award. There is hardly any question that Jr has the most fans of any driver.

Well Junior haters, I am just curious to why he and Bill Elliott has won so many "Most Popular Driver awards". What is the process to win, and do you think it's fixed, or is the process broken and needs to be replaced?

Naw, it isn't fixed and it doesn't really need to be replaced with other voting methods.

It isn't a "best driver" award, it is for the most popular. Jr has a personality that is liked by many. He usually speaks honestly and with sincerity.

You would never see Jr smashing a quitar in disrespect to the person that labored in its making.

LMAO, it must be tough for the Jr haters to see Jr continually be voted the most popular.

I don't think there is anything at all wrong with the process or the results. It is simply a contest for fans to vote on their favorite driver. More people like him than any other driver. It's that simple. I was a big Kyle Petty fan, even when he wasn't even qualifying for some races. I didn't desert the guy when he stopped winning. I liked the guy as a person and because his dad was my favorite before him. Junior has a lot of the same thing going on.

O.K. Junior haters if it ain't broke, then stop complaining that Junior keeps winning it.

I like it because it makes the veins in the Jimmie and Jeffies fans head bulge. :beerbang::D

Too bad being "popular" doesn't translate into any actual talents out on the track. I agree with another poster, Jr. is the Paris Hilton of Nascar. He's famous for being famous.

Yea, but at least my favorite drivers won 4 championship each.

I guess two Busch Championships and 18 Cup wins including a Daytona 500 doesn't mean anything? I guess that is no reason to have a bunch of his own and his fathers fans to vote for their favorite driver every year!

For whatever reason he has had a rough stretch of years, but hopefully they will get rid of the gremlins out of the engines and cobwebs out of their heads and get the 88 back to victory lane.

Most popular driver is just that and I don't think that its a secret that Junior has probably the most fans of all the drivers and yes, many of them probably voted early and often. The same things was said about Elliott when he won so often, but so be it. Earnhardt the senior probably had more fans, but he also had more non-fans and that might have made a difference a time or two.

Wow!!! Do you look for who has won a Championship and then call them your favorite.

Nope, I just root for whoever has talent. Jr. is not one of those drivers.

The Busch championship are meaningless because we are talking about Sprint, not Busch. The difference between the two series is like College Football vs. NFL. In College, not everyone is the best at the game, so you can be a mediocre player and come off looking great. However, in the NFL everyone is strong, everyone is fast, and everyone can play the game very well. I believe the same applies to Busch vs. Sprint. Jr. was a big fish in a small pond back in Busch, but in Sprint, he's a small fish in a large pond.

Also, that Daytona 500 win is not without controversy.

Honestly, I wouldn't put it past NASCAR to give Jr. alittle boost in that race. I mean it's a great story, son claims victory at track that killed father. It's like watching a modern day Greek Mythology!

Also, you hit the nail on the head. He got his father fan. He's famous because of his father, not for anything that he did. He's riding his dead dad's coat tail, and my guess is, he always will be. He knows he's mediocre at best, and he knows the only thing keeping him on Hendrick's team is the Earnhardt name.

For whatever reason he has had a rough stretch of years, but hopefully they will get rid of the gremlins out of the engines and cobwebs out of their heads and get the 88 back to victory lane.

They've already tried getting rid of the gremlins, first by switching to the best NASCAR team on the circuit, and then by switching crew chiefs. They can switch and swap all the different aspect they want, but until they address the man who sits behind the wheel, they're not going to be at the top of the points, or have a serious shot at the championship.

So in other words, people should just stop being fans of a given driver. They have no right to be fans of anyone, unless they choose to be a fan of a driver for the same reason as you choose to be a fan of a driver.

That's prety much what all the bit*ing is about in this thread. Jr has a lot of fans. And for different reasons. But no, he's not winning (and according to some has no talenet), so all the fans he had should stop being his fans.

The people that are complaining just never understand what makes a fan a fan. Sure, there he has fans because of his father and the cricumstances. But he's also got fans that never even saw his father race, or even really knew much about him.

I was never a fan of the senior Earnhardt, but am a fan of the junior Earnhardt. I also don't think that he will ever be the driver that most of his fans hope he will be and reminds me a lot of Kyle Petty. I wish him well and would dearly love to see him win more races. And I guess that if he were to come back to Daytona and win that race, some people would say that it was fixed. But what's new? That has been suggested for as long as I've been a fan of NASCAR and always will be.

I think he's more like Michael Waltrip than Kyle Petty, but ya I pretty much agree with everything you wrote.

This idea that just because someone isn't a fan of Jr., they must hate him is confounding.

I wonder if sometime it's the other way around and some jay are fans hate every other driver as well as their fans for not liking Jr.

Sometimes I wonder.

Of course he's the most popular driver and probably will be for some time. Why? I have no idea

That is close too, but my liking him to K. Petty is that both of them seemed to go down hill after the death of an immediate family. When Adam Petty died, I think Kyle put all of his effort into the memory of Adam and racing became just a means of support. I think that the senior Earnhardt was such a mentor to his son that when he died, Jr. needed to find someone to show him the way and he turned to his sister. Then there was the debacle of DEI. If anyone can be the new mentor to Jr. it probably will have to be Rick and that could happen. I'd love to see the young man back to his winning form, but only God knows if that will ever happen again.

Well said! I like Jr and would love to see him get straightened out. I know there are some issues with him and I hope someone can get it figured out. He has not performed well the last three years and started to fail even before that.

I have said it before, I like all of the drivers and love racing.

On another note, how about them Colts. :D

He is ok

Hey, at least he won something in 2009.:D
IMHO,He has done a lot to expand the sport beyond the shores of the USA.
I started watching nascar coz of him [more his dad]but at least for an Aussie he gave a hook to hang on to.
The name alone ,even in Australia is legendary, now we have Marcos Ambrose it is even better, now I can watch an Aussie.Maybe a win next year for MA [HOPE]
Cheers guys:beerbang::beerbang:

Couldn't have said it better, Buckaroo! And the comparison to Kyle Petty is right on the money!

The most popular driver was what 22nd in points?

It goes to show just how popular Jr is to get the award after having such a bad year. Name another driver that got the award when finishing that low in points. :D

Other than Petty, Jr may be the most popular ever. :beerbang::D

Yes, that's right. 22nd in points with a loyal following. That really, really seems to bother many people. LOL

There are some fans that only follow those drivers that are frequently winning. Every driver has a spell where they don't do well. Johnson will also have his turn in the barrel. Then we will see many of the fans jump ship.

Not me, I was still a Gordon fan when he had his rough times on the track, and I'll be a Johnson fan when he has his rough times on the track.

I cheer for forty three drivers in NASCAR. It makes it really nice at the end of the race. :D

That makes you a great fan, but please don't critize those of us who do support JR. through rough times.

Beers are on me.

Honestly, I would stop ragging on Jr. if his fans would stop the delusions that he's a better driver than he is. Of course Jr. need to stop that delusion too. I have a train magazine (I like trains), and in one issues there was an advertisement for a Dale Earnhardt Jr. Train Set, and it says "In Honor of one of NASCAR's greatest, next generation drivers..."

See, that is what I'm annoyed with. Jr. is not one of NASCAR greatest driver, and I wish people would wake up to that. Could he be a great driver in the future, I don't know. However, right now he is not.
