Just started running...

With my 14 yr old daughter--she wants to run and wanted me to run with her. I am glad for the time with her we talk about a lot of stuff.

Have some questions if anyone has advice...
I have a desk job that has added some unwanted pounds, so I dont want her to think her dad is dying on the run. I dont smoke...any ideas on how to make my wind last? (might be a stupid question but just curious)
 
I have no idea of your age but guessing you're in your 30's at a minimum and if you hope to maintain the same pace as your 14 year old,,good luck.

Get a decent pair of shoes, warm up a little by stretching and start off slow. Run short, very short, distances at first and work your way up. If you feel the onset of any distress STOP IMMEDIATELY
 
Im 41...and I kept up with her today...maybe she was taking it easy on me
 
well, there is jogging, and then there is running. You can do a lot of harm running if you don't work up to it. 14 year old different story, they still have bones that bend..and cartilage. :) I walk a couple times a day is the best I can do, and it has done wonders, lost 18 pounds in the last year and have my diabetes under pretty good control with a normal weight BMI index. It's my dog's fault, she is a slave driver. Good for your daughter getting the ol man to exercise.

Thanks Stand..I am all for anything that gets her and I out doing something and talking. 14 yr olds live in a diff world than I grew up in 27 yrs ago or so..lots to talk about. I do not want tgo show her weakness, so I tried and stayed with her.

Set Goals for your runs, build to longer runs, Remember you won't always improve, take days off and pick a place you like to run, it passes the time or mileage easier.
 
I would suggest asics or mizono for shoes. Invest in a good pair. They are worth the money. Ive logged over 500 miles in my asics & I still run with them. Start off slow like others have said. Gotta get your muscles used a strain they havent been through in a while. Patience is key. You wont see improvement immediately but over a few weeks youll build starter muscles & endurance. Drink water moderately, not all at once or youll cramp. Best of all, try to have some fun with it! Goodluck

Sounds like a great way to stay close to your daughter, but don't think of it as showing her weakness as much as just being honest with her. Never try to make her think you're something you're not, kids do respect honesty and will look up and respect you more for it. I hope it helps you obtain a closer relationship with your daughter, she's at the age where many youth tend to drift away from their parents. And as far as the advice on running, set your own goals and tell her you may not be able to go the distance with her when you start out, but start out going part of the distance with her and use that time to just talk to her in a way that will make her feel more at ease with opening up her world to you. Might be hard to talk to her if you press yourself too hard and can't catch your breath.
 
I run HS Cross Country. First things first....always warm up fully. Have good running shoes with lots of support. Change your shoes every 300-400 miles. I have suffered from shin splints due to lack of this. Work up to a long run. my first day without doing anything previous was 3 miles. That was not much fun. Stride out as much as possible too as it will be a lot easier. (Easy for me to say all this as i'm 15 and 6' 3".) Breath evenly too otherwise your lungs will burn like fire. At first breath in 2 counts and out 2 counts. As you become more experienced work your way up to 4 in 4 out. Good luck and enjoy yourself! It's a great way to clear your mind and have fun!
 
Start out by running every other day. Going straight into it like an XC runner with six runs a week is a good way to overwork yourself.

Believe it or not, eating healthier throughout the day will strengthen endurance. Some pro tips - drink a few cups of water throughout the day & the dinner before a longer run eat pasta or other carbo-loaded food. Also, Im 21 and even for me wearing thicker socks lessens the pain of impact in runs.

a 21 year old can get by with wolfing down carbs if they are active. Word to the wise from a carb counter. If you want to loose weight the easy way, try to limit your carbs to around 45 to 50 each meal, snacks to around 15 or 20. don't pay attention to all the B.S. on the front "sugar free," "reduced fat" " lite" hogwash. If it is sugar free they add in fat...fat free they add in sugar. Go by what the total carbs say on the back and be sure to look at the serving size. For instance, candy bars are based on eating about half a bar..who eats a half a bar?:) cereal, orange juice, rice, pasta, pizza, many of the foods that have been advertised as healthy are full of carbs and they will put the weight on ya OR take it off if you are aware and limit your serving sizes.

This is all true but I wasnt focusing on losing weight & dieting. Was focused on making the most out of a run. Carbo loading the day before is a famous trick.

that would work for his 14 yr old if she is trying to run for ribbons, but ol dad is trying to lose some weight and keep up..20 years from now you will figure it out.:)
