Kasey Kahne pit road incident

I've seen a bunch of folks saying they're not happy that NASCAR didn't cut Kasey some slack for speeding on pit road. I know it's not popular but, I would rather see them start enforcing the rules evenly than all willy-nilly like in the past.

I hope they continue with this.

They have never penalized anyone speeding down pit road to avoid an accident, Why start now without notice?

I'd rather they enforce a stupid rule now and change it later (at the end of the season) then pull a ruling out of their butts.

There is nothing to change. Just so the forum has this straight,

If there is a big accident at pit road and people have to come down pit road to dodge it and can't get to the speed limit, you think they should be penalized?

I think if their is a rule you should enforce it. If it's found to be a bad rule then review it and change it but if it's on the books yes enforce it.

I would say that they should take it by a case by case if they are just give green light if there's an accident some will be using that to there advantage last night was not the case he was trying to avoid an accident. NASCAR was wrong last night

Nothing wrong with enforcing the rules but there are times when a little common sense should tell you that a rule was broken for a good reason. It wasnt hard too see that Kasey sped up to avoid a wreck, Nascar should have been able to see that IMO

Nascar was wrong but they'll never admit it. If he hadn't hit the gas to get out of the way, got hit and spun around into somebody's stall injuring a crewman what would the story be?

I agree that it was crappy for Kasey and I didn't like it either. I would however rather have rules treated as rules.

No one has ever taken advantage of this...We have seen countless races where this happens, the drivers slow down as soon as they can

Okay then they should have enforced the "must have contact with the spotter rule" and black flagged Denny Hamlin for not having a working radio for 300 miles, why did they ignore the rule for him?

They should have black flagged him for it. This is what I'm saying.

Excellent point, the tv audience knew there was a radio problem so everybody must have known. Denny could have caused a major accident. Kasey avoids an accident and gets in trouble

They talked about it in the booth several times so yes the tower knew.

I think they already had Denny Hamlin engraved on the trophy, Its understandable that changing it would have been a major pain in the rear, besides the engraver was closed for the night anyway

Tough toots, they had to change it anyway.

I think Kasey got kinda screwed on that one. I always thought it was OK to speed down pit road if it was for evasive purposes, but apparently it isn't.

It always has been except this time.

Good point, I admit I hadn't thought of that. You could say that speeding down pit road could cause injuries as well though.

Seriously? Come on, how many times have we seen a car come down pit road at speed to avoid an accident? Many, many, many, times. And now Nascar decides to penalize a driver for it? A complete joke! With out question a complete joke. :bsflag:

I've seen them run through pit road at speed avoiding a wreck and there was no penalty. But in Kahne's case he was coming in for a pit stop. Technically he sped and got a very slight advantage. To make it fair NASCAR should have held him in the pits for a couple seconds but it isn't practical to expect NASCAR to make that call before the pit stop was over. I felt they should cut him some slack but if they did that, others would find a way to abuse a rule modification and it would be a mess. Sometimes other cars wreck and take you out, Kahne had some bad luck but didn't wreck his car.

No. no, no, no! He was avoiding a wreck, if he had stayed at speed he would have been in an accident possibly causing himself or the other driver injury, the end nothing else to say. Nascar blew this on a mamoth scale.!

Tried to get the answer to this from several media types today with no success. Here's a thought. Publish the freakin rule book like every other major sport. I don't understand the delay in doing this.

I don't think NASCAR understands the rule book yet:D

It has always been accepted that if avoiding an accident the pit lane speed was not enforced. What is different here is, that in order to avoid the accident, Kahne's only choice was to speed up. Usually when avoiding accidents cars are slowing down when they break the pit speed rule. This time a car had to speed up to avoid an accident and they had never seen that before. I think where the official was standing he couldn't see the car Kahne is trying to avoid until it crosses pit lane. All he sees is a car sliding harmlessly behind Kahne, and Kahne not attempting to slow down entering pit road so he calls a penalty. I'll bet he didn't know Kahne was avoiding an accident. If he did know this, then the official should be relieved of his duty. Whether it is in the rulebook or not this has always been the exception to the rule. So if Nascar, knowing the situation and still enforced this penality, they made a huge mistake.

Pretty sure penalties are sent down from the nascar control tower to the officials on the ground.

If there's a wreck, you're allowed to shoot down pit road at a buck-ninety. If some jack wagon spins next to you coming to pit road, you better just stop and let said jack wagon get his bearings back. Makes sense

Sadly the damage cant be fixed :(

KK and team should have raised more hell.
They have reversed other bad calls.
And Rick Henrick should have raised hell for his driver as well.

I totally agree, Nascar makes "judgement calls" all the time. Obviously they made a "judgement call" for Denny's problem, but why not Kasey. It's obvious he made every effort to reduce speed right away.
