Because it's made up almost entirely of foreign drivers, competing on mostly American tracks. When your average American Joe goes to a CART race, he wants to root for fellow Americans in American-made cars, not some Japanese dude in a Lola.

Harsh, yet oh so very true. :( :(

Don't like open wheel.......but almost voted because I can't pronounce the driver's names!! Good thread.......it'll get lively!!:D

Yeah......like that boat!! Can we water ski behind it?:D

Do you get water over the transom when you slow down?

Have to agree with Stridsberry. How can you talk cart to a bunch of guys sitting around a break table at work if you can't say the drivers names. :D

They are fun to watch in person, boring on TV. Side-by-side racing is rare in the races I've seen, so you basically watch a bunch of drivers you don't know going around the track.

Plus I never know when they are on and never think about looking. I barely have enough time to watch Busch nonetheless another series.

I think most Americans dislike it because they are unable to say a driver's name. Pretty sad reason to dislike a sport, but to each his own.

I was watching the Dolphins/Jets game and could barely pronounce half the names on either team, did I turn it off? No.

The biggest reason American race fans don't like open wheel racing is because the drivers don't smash each others car's up to pass.

Here's my question...

Why is this topic in General NASCAR chat?

Other than that...I think it best if remain quiet for the time being...

No need to remain quiet.

Say what's on your mind, we may draw out some that agree with us.

I am a fan of most racing but there are two seris I don't like(but watch, bc its racing) and thats F1 and CART.

I dislike CART because of the following:
- No Passing
- Small fields
- Not enought Ovals
- Mostly not in US
- has had bad managment(Pooke was a step in the right direction, but why did he alow the race to even start in Austrila)
- The way the treat IRL teams and teams that are defecting to IRL
- They have no big race(such as Indy 500 or Daytona 500)

Things I do like CART
- Long Beach
- Burke lake Front Airport
- Leguna Seca
- Safty team

I think Vern (how appropriate) left off one important option from the poll.

E. Its not as "entertaining" as NASCAR.

Oh man, this is gonna get ugly.

IN MY OPINION...

NASCAR is entertainment first, motorsport second...

He left off F as well
Which I would have voted for.

F. The IRL is better!!!

Sure.

While it's true that stock cars are far from stock, they at least resemble something I could conceivably drive on the roads around here, minus the paint jobs etc. CART doesn't. NHRA doesn't. IRL doesn't. F1 doesn't.

That's a valid point.

But doesn't the competition appeal to ya at all? The pure speed? Watching someone enter a hairpin turn at 215mph, slow to 20mph, then accelerate back up to 190+ all in about 7 seconds doesn't excite ya?

I mean, if they're racing something, I'm watchin em.

Nope. The engines sound like a bee, no distinct roar.

I follow WC and dirt, that's it. If a truck race is on and I have nothing better to do, I might watch 10 minutes or so.

No, as in super late model, Southern All Stars. They do run an open wheel UMP modified division at the local, and I do enjoy watching them. They usually have the largest field, I know one of the drivers pretty well, and it is a good show. But I'm there for the big boys.

Sprint cars and midget cars interest me about as much as Hillary Clinton's newest business suit.

you forgot all of the above. CART has become the US version of F1. I used to badmouth theIRL, but after watching a couple races this year i must say say it's the most competitive series here, yep even more exciting than NASCAR.

I like open Wheel, but would vote for the other three. Hard to relate to the cars or drivers. Normally after a few laps the field is set. I try watching a couple each year hoping I will enjoy them better, but hasn't worked yet.

They need to race on dirt. I would go to Gafney to whatch that.

Here is another reason Why i don'y like CART! There finishes are nothing like these
2002top4fin.jpg

They don't have finishes like that because the drivers aren't all driving the exact same kind of car...made by the governing body all to the exact same specs.

In CART, the car manufacturers make the cars.

i dont enjoy the fact that if they wreck, they are out. which leads to not being able to persuade somebody to get out of your way. i am sure it would be awesome to drive one, just not exciting for me to watch

I'm sure that CART has not made any friends here in TX, since they cancelled the race here at TMS. I hope they never come back here, because all they did was whine about going too fast around the track. If the IRL cars can control the g-force, then they should be able to do the same. That cancellation cost them a bundle of money! And I am sure some fan base too!

CART cars go faster than IRL cars. There really were too many G's for them to safely run the race. They didn't do it on purpose or because they just all of the sudden decided that they didn't want to race there. It cost them ALOT of money to transport everything down there, set everything up, and pay all the crew members just to turn around and leave without racing. I'm not a big fan of CART for other reasons which I mentioned in another thread awhile back and that I won't get into here, but I will say that I know for a fact that they did want to race there but it wasn't physically possible for the drivers to do so.

I disagree with part of your statement. It's called testing. Not every driver has to come, but the IRL tested at TMS and was able to contain the g-forces so the drivers didn't pass out. The same thing could have been done to the CART cars. They shouldn't have waited to cancel until, what was it 2 or 3 days before the scheduled race date? Needless to say, they aren't on the schedule for next year. I just didn't find that very fan friendly.

im trying to get involved in it........its good racing..........but i think lack of popularity has a lot to do with the IRL.......i wish the IRL and Cart would settle their differnces and get back together.

Me too.

But I think that it's boring to only run ovals. If they could get back together and run a good mixture of circuits then it would be perfect.

i totally agree.......why have open wheel cars run just oval? ive never really liked that about the IRL

Actually they don't run the exact same car there are 2 manufactures of cars(3 in 2003) and two diffrent engines(3 or 4 next year) with many diffrent suppliers. Each supplier is diffrent from the other, so not all chevy motors are the same(just like cup)
Cart just as more horsepower than IRL

And CART canceld that race in Texas the morning of the race that is why it was horrible. many people were already at the track or on their way to the track, when CART cancaled the race.

TWF, what about Rally?  Those are stock cars...do you like Rally?

Ain't never watched none. Is that the series with all the Subarus and stuff racing on dirt roads, up mountains, through woods and all that?

Yep, along with the Fords.

Is it that the cars aren't "American"?

What about Lemans? With the Corvette's and stuff.

I love rally. I just wish that there was somebody from our country that were in some of the top levels of racing around the globe like F1.
