This isn't looking good.....

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Target will leave IndyCar at the end of this season after 27 years with Chip Ganassi Racing that included 11 championships and four Indianapolis 500 victories.

The exit comes as Target is examining all of its marketing platforms under new chairman Brian Cornell. Target is also the primary sponsor of Kyle Larson in NASCAR's top Sprint Cup Series and will return to his car in 2017.

The unfortunate same ol' same ol' of new top management taking the reins. Target's Nascar deal runs through 2017, and reportedly Kyle Larson's contract with Ganassi also expires after 2017, so more changes are distinctly possible. Not good news.

Not good but Larson will be alright. If the deal with Ganassi crumbles as a result he will land on his feet, maybe in a better deal.

If I were Chip Ganassi I would go directly to Walmart and see if they want to get in for a year or two to test the waters for a longer term deal. Maybe put Sam's Club on the car.

I am guessing he will end up in the 5 car.

Not good for Chip most people think that Larson is a shoe in to go to Hendrick in the end I on the other hand believe that he will end up at Stewart Haas they are the future after all :)

SHR 2018
Harvick
10 Larson
Bowyer
Busch

I'd really rather see Bowyer to HMS and Larson to the 14.

I am not sure if this article is worth reading but I thought I would post it for verification purposes. The term "epic fail" is so overused it has lost its true meaning but Target did have an epic failure in trying to gain entry into the Canadian market and as a result took a 5.4 billion write down. I am not surprised the new management team looked at everything and made cuts to things it saw as not providing significant value.

I do not want to change the course of this conversation but this sort of thing is exactly why today's rabid Nascar fans should be concerned about race attendance, TV/Online viewership and the old age of Nascar fans which advertisers don't seem to like very much.

Don't even get me started on that POS Brian Cornell... Let's just say he can go back to Bentonville and never return.

Don't be writing off my driver just yet!

I hope I am dead wrong but I have a feeling that Dale Jr may have run his last race as if he is suffering symptoms of concussions it could be a dogs age before he recovers well enough to drive again and it seems like a good bet he will miss the chase this year. He needs to think about his quality of life and remember he is one hooked bumper into the wall at the 4 annual crash fests of having a permanent disability. He has money, fame, stature and a lot of love from a lot of people and will still draw a crowd at 90.

IDK anything about Brian Cornell. Do you have any special insight into why he is a POS or is it just a gut feeling? Just curious that's all.

ooo for sure we may be in the last decade of Nascar period. 10 years from now between TV contracts, title sponsor, aging fans, aging owners.

I really don't think Nascar will ever go away but I do think that it will have to have some radical changes in order to get to the point where it is sustainable on a meaningful level. To the best of my knowledge nothing Nascar has attempted to do in order to gain fans has worked and the current management has to go as I suspect they are all aging baby boomers who know nothing of what today's audience wants.

The silver lining for Nascar is they fell into this amazing lifeline of a TV contract so they should have a period of years where they can come up with a product that people want to come out and see in person and also from home. Right now Brian France et al are on the hope plan and by that I mean they are hoping that something unbelievable and unexpected happens that brings in new fans and goodwill to the series. Well that ain't a plan!

I am an aging baby so I am the wrong person to fix the problems but if I had to start somewhere I would radically change the car to the point that it was quite similar to a RWD stock car. I think the next thing would be to look at the tracks and either have them change layouts or have an alternative course that could be used. The next thing would be to streamline rules and quit being so damn anal about measuring cars with lasers and freaking out if they are 1/1000 out of tolerance. Make the series manufacturer friendly and cost effective to get into as opposed to have them build an engine that was a great idea in the 1950's.

Just some thoughts and each one of them may be completely wrong.

Chip will be ok thanks to the Charter yada yada. The self declared wealth it created will save the day.

Cessna will probably step up some.

Or maybe like Energizer will stay on as a sponsor.

They will stay on for another year in NASCAR, maybe another company will step up. This will shakeup IndyCar considerably though, that is a huge blow.

I give this post a :punkrocke.

Ganassi will be fine. He's good at this stuff.

Target made a disastrous foray into the Canadian retail market. Opened 133 + stores ... all gone.

They apparently lost $5.2 billion. With a B. Not surprising that they're "going through what that evolution of our sports marketing will be" in the future."
