'Majors' in NASCAR's future?

Oh brother.I won't be surprised if they try the latest "major" gimmick for Indy..get out the lipstick for that pig. Exactly the opposite of what most fans want. It would be different if in all the years they have held races there they figured out how to have decent (not even spectacular) racing. Please Nascar if you are going to do the majors thing, pick tracks where they have at least a chance for good hard racing.

Bonus points for leading stages, extra bonus points for winning races, super duper extra bonus points for winning certain races? I feel sorry for the poor fool that will have to calculate this mess every week.

Should have been done years ago truthfully. Daytona 500, Coca Cola 600, Southern 500, and the Brickyard 400 being majors rewarding more points would be cool.

I thought points didn't matter any more?

Seriously, what's the value of awarding extra points under a 'win and you're in' format?

Have you been watching this season. I just assume you haven't because they have went over how points translate to the playoff like a million times already.

I think it's against the rules on this forum to agree with NASCAR on anything. I'll check the bylaws before swearing to it though. I'll get back to ya.

c'mon man..points matter.:)
1. most importantly it gives Networks more opportunity for more commercials. It depends on how many commercials they have sold for that race as to how many stages there will be. I bet both plate tracks will be special (Major)

2. It gives the press and the fans something to follow, and the "winning is everything" of recent years to fade into the back ground

3. Most of the teams will be for it except the leader. The fans get anouth bathroom break.

I break those rules quite often. Anything NASCAR does changes wise is for the good of the sport.

One wonders how NASCAR reached its past (way past) level of popularity without these brilliant enhancements.

I really didn’t think I’d like them, or this one, when I first heard of them but they’re AWESOME!

To be fair to Nascar "Majors" are something the fans have been asking for.

Just wasnt a need for it then. NASCAR didnt have competition like they do today with entertainment right at everyone's hands. They were making changes though then, just not as many.

Tygah would have to take the road to recovery thing first.....

Maybe he 'n Mayfield could be class mates.

Pay more money for the big races. No need to keep dicking with the points. K.I.S.S.

It was just a few years ago that the sanctioning body deemed NASCAR fans too simple to comprehend the points system that had been in place since the 70's, so they changed it so it would be "easier to understand." So much for that...

Oh boy! Yet ANOTHER change to the points format!

How about instead of annual overhauls to the already ridiculous points format, they...I dunno...fix the ************* race cars.

I dont see how this effects the current points system at all. It'd just be like the 600 was I assume and that played out fine.

Nothing says "this is one of our biggest, bestest races!" than another scheduled caution.

One of NASCAR's crown jewels, the Commerical 400 at the Brickyard. I'm sure the fans will be on the edge of their seats watching 15 minutes of onboards, 10 minutes of Paul Menard's helmet cam, in between the 3 hours of commercials.

This break to ads in the middle of a pass for the lead is brought to you by Credit One Bank.

Here is a thought. Maybe because Nascar has such an old audience they figured that the term "Major" would resonate with their fan base and also trick a few old duffers who thought they were tuning into second round coverage of the Richard Pryor-Leggs Open.

Ask Gordon. He sticks 'valuable' in front of most anything.

How much more inspiration do drivers "need" in order to race harder... it's like NASCAR believes if they put more on the line magically these 200mph cars will suddenly race side by side for the lead at every venue...

Tell sponsors and all to save their money... slow the cars down a decent 20 mph and you'll think every race is a major...

Maybe if they didn't have the playoffs this would matter a bit more. Only thing this might help would be people who don't have a win and need points to get in. But as long as the playoffs are around, points in the first 26 don't matter as much. Unless they up the playoff points for these races or something.

So now we'll have "Game 7" moments to be like MLB, the NBA, and the NHL, we have "overtime" to be like the NFL, we have a final four to be like college basketball, and now we might have majors to be like golf and tennis.

I can't wait to see what NASCAR lifts from the world of bowling.

We've already got the SPLITter.
