That's the best they could do is get Mariah carey for the national anthem for Daytona. She is going to be the next Anna Nicole!!

Most fans at these events would probably like to see a country singer, but NASCAR is trying to shake their whole hillbilly stereotype. I don't really care much either way. I just hate it when people screw up te dang song. They try to add their artistic stylings, but it usually sounds a lot worse.

Thats true about them messin up the song. And people need to realize this sport is not just Southern anymore.

thanks for the warning Dino...now i can turn the sound on the tv off when mariah comes on.......I don't care for her.........:(
rather see Cheryl Crow:)

I don't know what to say about this thread. We all know how NASCAR is trying to diversify this sport. It's much more evident with the tracks outside of the south. Hey, I remember the first time Jose Feliciano did the anthem for the World Series and people screamed. Then when Marvin Gaye did it for the NBA championship, everyone cheered. It's just a matter of when and where. Yes, a big percentage of race fans love country music, but just as many love rock. I think the opera lovers are in the minority though. :) However, speaking of opera, didn't one of the three tenors sing the anthem at a race? Seems like I remember that, but not sure.

Any singer.........rock, country, opera, new wave, hip-hop!! Just sing the song.........don't put some cutesy little twist to it! It all started with that fat*** Roseanne Barr for the a World Series game many years ago.:(

That is the most memorable version I've ever heard of that song. When she grabbed her crotch and spit I just wanted to reach right into my TV and beat about 50 pounds of that blubber right off of her.

thats a good one..I like that..........yeah grab that blubber and yank..:D :D :D :D

Some tries to impress the people by playing with their voice too much on that song and Mariah will be one of them. Maybe they should just bring Ol' George "the possum" Jones back.:D

I say get Gearge Straight or Whitney Houston, they know how to sing it straight~~!

Really, I would prefer the simple instrumental version.

During one of the World Series (I think) Steve Vi played it on guitar and it sounded pretty neat.

Remember Whitney Houston at the Super Bowl? That was moving.

But I do prefer when they don't butcher it, it should be sung traditionally.

well maybe Mariah will sing it tradtionally....She has a great voice

Don't hold your breath for Mariah not putting her "signature" on it. That's one song that should NEVER be altered for personal gain. So many try, though.:(

yes she might alter it a little ..like when it is at the height of the moment in the song, her voice may go higher to get into the moment that is when it is emotional and people get into the song....you want the viewers to feel what you are feeling when you are singing a song...believe me I am a singer

Krystle

Just sing the song...........don't try to improve upon it! The emotions are either there or they are not.......putting your personal twist to it will only ruin it for the people who have the emotion already. The others won't be impressed anyway.

AngelPoet, I'm sure she will do a fine job and I'm sure you have a beautiful voice. :)

sometimes a personal twists can ruin it but sometimes it will not it depends on how much they practice and perfect it...and if they have confidence in themselves....and people will be impressed by the way she pulls it off with her voice and her poise

I could care less. "Gentleman, start your engines!"

Highboy, I echo your sentiments. Why get so worked up over who is singing the national anthem? Big deal!

Doesn't really explain why they are getting their panties in a bind over Mariah, but to each his/her own.

I was really referring to those who do NOT want her singing at Daytona.

Whatever, have a good one.

If she does a good fine , but i have seen her butcher songs before....hope she does well and doesn't over do it.

I think its a joke that Mariah is doing it. I'm all for someone other than country singers singing it, but not her. She just irks me. And, is there a proper way to sing or play it? Sure, Whitney did an awesome job, but I also like Hendrick's version. What if Metallica did it with some heavy riffs and Lars tearing the drums up? Or even a nice blugrass band with a mandolin? I remember when Steve Tyler did for the Indy one year, he screwed it up by changing the words and Rosie should have been shot while she was on the field.

And there is nothing like hearing the Anthem and the flyover just as its finished. The only thing about hearing the Anthem in this area is all of the asinine Baltimore Orioles fans screaming during it. Its really disrespectful.

If they want diversification, how about having someone like Marilyn Manson do it. :p
