Mark Martin

If it didn't it woulda made a hell of a U in the cage.

I totally agree with you Dale1. Even if the wall didn't penetrate the bars the impact it self would've been pretty bad. I say we just protect the ends of these walls and not put the door bars to the test.

My guess is they put a gate there to keep a car going down the wall instead of into it and have a person there to open it when needed.

I'm more worried about a car making it onto pit road like that. IMO, the only solution is a longer wall, but I'm not sure that's possible at MIS.

All that is needed is a gate.

From watching the crash, I would say that because the impact was behind the crash bars, the impact was absorbed kinda like the softer wall. Now, let's move on.

Certainly a scary hit. The great thing is that it just as it did an nobody was injured. From this they'll learn a lot more about that type of impact and make the car safer as well as increase safety on pit road. If it took something like this to expose safety flaws then everyone's lucky that it occurred the way it did.

Thankfully we'll never know the result if that hit took place in the middle of the door. The COT does have another bar in the door area. The seat has been moved more towards the center of the car away from the door several inches. The foam won't do a dammm thing. With the speed the car hit and at that angle coupled with the relatively narrow end of that wall intrusion into the ****pit is a distinct possibility.

Well said SST55, Couldn't have said it better.(I tried in like 6 other posts too;) )

NASCAR still reviewing pit designs after Mark Martin crash

No changes are planned for the first race on a high-speed oval since Mark Martin's violent collision with a pit wall at Michigan International Speedway, but NASCAR is reviewing tracks' pit designs.

Martin was uninjured after his No. 55 Toyota skidded off Turn 4, down the pit road and into a wall opening at a sharp angle just behind the driver's-side door. The odds are slimmer that a car could squeeze through an opening in the same way during Sunday's AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

"Michigan had an incredibly large (pit) opening compared to some racetracks, probably twice the opening that the Atlanta openings are," vice president of competition Robin Pemberton told USA TODAY Sports. "Each (track) is unique, and sometimes it'll take a unique change to prevent something. We are in the process of looking at everything as we go forward."

Complete over reaction, IMO. If Mark would just slow down when entering pit road, he wouldn't have these problems. While we're at it, lets get him to stop driving around with his blinker on. ;)

I think if they just extend the wall he hit back toward the infield, the larger wall surface would absorb the impact without cutting into the car. I think a gate could become a projectile and increase the danger to pit crews and infield fans.

Kurt: "Mark, you go".
Mark: "I really, REALLY, REALLY want you to go first"
Kurt: "Then turn your *&##!! blinker off, you washed up never was"

Mark: Careful, Kurt. I just might decide to Kram my Nitram up where the Sun don't shine!
