"and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with preparation and opportunity."

But of course it does. Matt and his team were prepared when the opportunity presented itself which resulted in what we call GOOD luck. Doesn't get any simpler.
YEP !!!!!!! And so is every other team on pit road prepared with extra tires inflated to the proper pressure.
Not to belabor the point, but, where and when the incident happened, among others, are in no way connected to opportunity and preparation.
Unless one considers the "opportunity" the good luck that happened when and where it did, but that is a bit of a stretch to make a point. It really is LUCK.

Make no mistake, Matt is a qualified driver who is entitled to everything he has recieved this year. And whether he wins one race or ten, he has paid his dues, eaten humble pie, fought his way through the pack, and earned it every inch of the way. But without Lady Luck perched on his shoulders for some of the things out of thier control, it might be a different story altogether.

As further support of this discussion, look at last years champion and the unfortunate incidents, many not of his making, that have befallen him. Most are not relegated to the pile of non- preparation and missed opportunity. They are appropriately placed in the pile of "bad luck" and "bad luck" is one thing missing from Matt Kenseth's resume' this year.

Oh yeah, and newman is the winner of this years championship. 8 wins and 7 poles? Come on NASCAR, no one can even compare to newman right now. HE is the best.

I guess that means that Matt should have been the 2002 champion since he had the most wins?

But, I thought Ryan has only 6 wins this year?

He's so far ahead because he has been that much more consistent than the rest of them.

They've been saying for years that all you'd have to do was place in the Top 10 most of the year and you wouldn't even need a win to win it all. Now Matt is doing that, and the powers that be want to revamp the points system to favor wins. Ask Jack Roush, its all about the France family getting the winner they want. Mark Martin might be able to tell you something about it too. My driver, Dale Sr, benefitted both times Martin got the shaft.

Wasn't Kenseth sitting last year, right where Newman is now?

Consistency wins. If you can add some race wins to that, it's icing on the cake.

This new post at bottom thing is annoying ...

I never thought to check ... sorry for the duplicates

Hehe BB ...

Actually a mistake this time.

I've done it before though.

BB:

You're a Rusty fan eh? I kinda feel for him and guys like Mark Martin because they are great drivers, just victims of their own timing.

I think that both of them could have done much better had they not had a Dale Sr and Jeff Gordon to race with.

Its also funny how 'human' drivers get when their crews are in disarray. Take Jeff Gordon, he's the streakiest driver out there. He goes as the Rainbow Warriors go. Kenseth has the best pit crew going, and he's winning. The car and talent are big parts of success in NASCAR, but to this day peopl still underestimate a pit crew's effect on a team's performance.

You have to admit, it almost seems that Kenseth is a robot on cruise. He's always there when it counts. Better than anyone else this year, he's salvaged top 15s out of horrible racecars. Consistency and driving for points when you don't have a car capable of winning are valuable skills in NASCAR. After finishing 6th with 5 wins last year he realized that sometimes risking a good top 10 car for the win isn't a good idea. Give credit where credit is due, he's definitely grown up as a driver.

matt has had tons of luck this year. but he ain't no dummy either.
unlike most drivers, matt ain't forcing to win every race.
if he can't pass someone. then he won't pass them.
if someones faster, he'll let them by.

I think kenseth had 5 wins last year and not that many poles when the season was complete. Newman has 6 wins and can still win races and will win more poles this year.

Matt had one pole last year, but I think Hicksey meant the final performances are about the same. Matt had a lot of DNF's from accidents or engine failures like Ryan has had this year.
