Maybe some older fans can help this dilemma

I wasn't a Rusty fan but I give him credit. He was one of, if not the first, who knew how to "tune' his car with minute changes in shocks. His was one of the first teams, again if not the first, with a shock dyno in the hauler.
Today it's a "little tight, little loose. it plows or drives like a dump truck" from most of the drivers.

1st shock dyno in hauler was b/c penske was sellin shocks .....not rusty's brainchild .
started w/ indy cars........then nascar later.

Only a couple years older then you, but ran into the my drivers "retiring" thing at the end of 2003 when Bill Elliott stepped out of the 9 (I became a Bill fan the year he started his 7 year winless streak, darn McDonalds car) I went into 2004 with no idea who my driver would be. I had never heard of Kasey Kahne so I knew it wouldn't be his replacement especially after he blew up in the 500. Then the next week he goes out and nearly wins setting the last 10 years of painful inconsistency and frustration for me in motion:D. But I also have my other driver coming up, I probably would have liked Chase even if he wasn't good cause of his dad, but the winning helps:D

I'm only 21 years old and been watching this great sport since I can remember. Now, after so many years :D I am watching the guys I grew up watching like, Jeff Burton, Mark Martin, Sterling Marlin, Dale Jarrett, Joe Nemecheck, Ted Musgrave, Ricky Rudd, Rusty Wallace retire and others such as Tony Stewart, Dale Jr. and unfortunately Jeff Gordon all be mentioned in the same sentence as the word "retirement". A whole new generation is coming into the series. For the life of me I cannot foresee the likes of Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Trevor Bayne and David Reagan becoming the whiley old veterans of NASCAR. I think I'm reaching a mid racing crises :cuckoo::bleh:

How to cope?

Just hang in there. I saw my first race in 1951. Lee Petty wrecked Curtis Turner in a little track in Roanoke, Va, and all of us teen agers grew up hating on the Pettys. Curtis was a local hero, and Petty was an out of towner from North Carolina! I didn't even like Richard when he started, ha ha . Things change while they stay the same. Kyle was the first Petty I liked. Now even he is gone. I still like racing.

Keep watching and sooner or later you will figure out who to pull for, I watched Kyle Busch drive once in person and I was sold. I know it sucks when your driver quits racing but 2 of my all time favorite drivers and one of my favorite motorcycle racers were killed while racing, that kind of takes the fun out for quite a while

I've been through a couple retirements, started out as a Harry Gant fan, then when he retired I became a Dale Jarrett fan for the next 13 years until he retired. Now I just kinda pull for all the Toyota guys. When your driver retires, you'll figure out pretty quick who to latch onto next.

Tough to be a Kahne fan, When he started, he was super fast and would run the tires off the car, but he won a lot of races too.
I remember when they would interview Bill after a win and he would be all aw shucks. He didn't drive like an aw shucks guy though. It might have been the press slanting it that way. Now Chase isn't like that, he is really focused and you can see the determination to make it in Nascar in his eyes. I think his dad was that way too, it runs in the family.

Yeah, you get the 04's, the 06's and the 12's with Kasey but you also get the '05's the 07's and the 14's. It drives me nuts.

when kasey was driving in the busch series for robert yates he was wrecking the car every week, and then one week he was no longer driving for yates. he was suppose to come up into cup with yates and be fords main prize. if he didn't wreck on his own he was always caught in someone else's wreck and that still continues today. he did have a suit against yates from back then, not sure how that played out

i think austin dillon will make history and be a champion in all 3 top series of nascar. i wanted biffle to do it, but that's not looking that good, but years from now, i believe austin will get a cup championship to go with his truck and nationwide. and he does still have a chance albeit it will be tough to win rookie of the year in all 3 series

bill is still aw shucks....but 1 helluva racin focus mentor for his kid.
chase gets his press savvy focus from mama.

When Joey retires, will you lead a midnight march while holding a candle in one hand and a picture of Joey in the other? :p
I just imagine an elderly SlicedBread22 watching the TV (or holo-screen or whatever we'll have in the far flung future) and the press conference with Joey Logano announcing his retirement and just a single tear rolling down SB22's cheek.
