He's taken a beating in reputation lately. He's been beleaguered, trash talked, insulted. He's been called a meth addict, a danger to other racers and fans.

And maybe he is all those things, maybe he isn't. Frankly, that's up to a court of law to decide ultimately. You and I, we don't know, and anything we say would be pure speculation.

But one thing we do know is that the embattled independent driver has won a small moral victory against the sanctioning body already. That's something, at least.

But years before that he took on a big gun too...and won.

Here then, for all of you on here who weren't fans then, is a flash back to that race, that last lap. And a little bit of the sling winding up for the final toss.

Mayfield bumps The Intimidator (from June 20th,2000)

By Dick Brinster

The Associated Press

LONG POND, Pa. - This time, The Intimidator was pushed aside on the final lap.

And racing fans who have seen Dale Earnhardt do that so often to others, stood and cheered Jeremy Mayfield after he won the Pocono 500.

"I just wanted to rattle his cage a little bit," Mayfield said yesterday after a race that had been delayed a day because of rain and fog.

Those were the words Earnhardt used after the most infamous of his last-lap taps sent a victory-bound Terry Labonte spinning out of the lead last August in Bristol, Tenn.

"I don't think he can say anything about what happened today," said Mayfield, who says Earnhardt has messed with him many times. "If he comes back and gets me again, we'll come back and get him again."

Make way for The New Intimidator.

"We all know he wouldn't have done that if he had been in the car behind," Dale Jarrett said facetiously. "It would be hard for that guy to say anything."

And Earnhardt did say little about the contact in the fourth turn at Pocono International Raceway, a tap just a quarter-mile before he would have taken the checkered flag for his 76th career victory.

But he drove up alongside Mayfield on the cooldown lap, put his arm out the window and extended a finger.

"I told him he was No. 1," Earnhardt said of the gesture.

Earnhardt's car owner, Richard Childress, summed it up well.

"He just knocked him out of the way to win," Childress said. "That's just racing. There'll be another day."

Mayfield said he saw a few thumbs-up signs from crew members of other teams as he rode by on the way to Victory Circle.

The only thumbs-down expression came from a fan behind the pit wall. He threw a can of beer at Mayfield's Ford, but missed.

"A lot of other drivers out there weren't taking up for him," Mayfield said of Earnhardt. "If you've watched enough Winston Cup racing you can see why."

Still, it was profitable day for Earnhardt, who fell to fourth before regaining control of his Chevrolet. He picked up 41 points on series leader Bobby Labonte, and now trails by 57 in his bid for an unprecedented eighth Winston Cup championship.

"You don't ever have a win until the checkered flag falls," Earnhardt said. "All in all, it was a good day. We gained some points on Labonte."

Good luck, Jeremy.

Interstingly enough, just saw this posted on another board:

http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/story/9787800

BIG news and crushing for Jeremy....assuming it wasn't Nascar's own in house guy again. It doesn't really give sources yet. Guess we will have to wait and see.

Edit to add that affadavit could be damning, though. Depending on the reliability of the stepmother.

Yeah, this battle is getting nasty. The rhetoric continues to build. Mayfield fired back last week, now Nascar releases the above.

Jeremy from late last week:

"Suspended Sprint Cup driver Jeremy Mayfield has broken his silence, vehemently denying allegations of drug use and adamantly defending himself from recent NASCAR claims in an exclusive interview with ESPN.

It is Mayfield's first extensive public response since being suspended indefinitely from NASCAR competition on May 9, when NASCAR said he failed a random drug test the previous week in Richmond, Va. NASCAR later confirmed an ESPN The Magazine report that Mayfield had tested positive for methamphetamine.

A federal appeals court issued an injunction last week that lifted Mayfield's indefinite suspension. NASCAR appealed that ruling on Monday. Mayfield has not returned to the track.

Mayfield feels he was not given due process; he's mad and he's not taking it anymore:

"Every time there's an action [by NASCAR], there's going to be a reaction. From here on out," Mayfield said in a phone interview Wednesday from his home in Statesville, N.C. "I try to be nice. I try to be respectful to them. I try to do everything right. But I'm not getting drug through the mud no more."

Mayfield repeated his stance that he never took methamphetamine. He also said he no longer consumes alcohol, largely due to the fact, he said, his father was a "bad alcoholic." Asked if he had ever taken illegal drugs, Mayfield responded, "What are you calling illegal? I've drank beer. I don't drink beer at all anymore. I don't drink. Don't do anything."

He said he feels as though NASCAR is attempting to make an example of him.

"I feel like that's exactly what they thought I was going to be. Exactly. To a 'T,'" Mayfield said. "Now, all the sudden, Brian's [France, NASCAR's chairman] coming back saying, 'Well, we have positive tests all the time.' Well, if it's a zero-tolerance policy, how in the hell do you have people testing positive all the time?

"Then he comes back and says there's a list. I forget what big word he used -- an exhaustive list of drugs. Everybody in the world has asked him why the drivers don't have a list. What did he say? Now there's a list -- an exhaustive list. Right? Where's it at?

"It's bull----, man, and somebody needs to stand up and see through this. There's experts out everywhere saying the same thing I'm [saying]."

Mayfield points out inadequacy in the NASCAR drug testing policy:

To drive home his point, Mayfield cited quotes from a pair of drug experts, Dr. Gary Wadler of the World Anti-Doping Agency and Travis Tygart of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Both have recently questioned NASCAR's policy of not releasing its list of banned substances.

"I sit here listening to Brian [France] on a daily basis, defending their policy and talk about how thorough, accurate and fair it is. Then you turn right around and look at what, say, like, Dr. [Gary] Wadler, for example. Quote: 'Their policy is way, way behind those of other sports.'"

Good luck, Jeremy.

That's a classic 97. Kelloggs being a Labonte fan will really appreciate it. LOL

"Kelloggs being a Labonte fan will really appreciate it. LOL"

Good,tkj.:beerbang:

And yeah, old Dale really did pull a sucker punch on Terry in that one. I think his own fans were ticked about that move.

I think so too. I was there that night. Very few were happy about it. LOL

Do you remember the way Mayfield moved Earnhardt in the race we are talking about here too? It was smooth as silk, you have to admit. Just enough to move him without crashing him.

Well according to Mayfields step-mother he's been using for 7 years, and he tested positive again. Stick a fork in him he's done:eek:

Oh my, I think you may be right.
Wonder how much she got paid for that affidavit?

Im staying out of the speculation as much as possible personally, but I agree that stepmom angle does seem a bit of a stretch. The stepmom very likely had a very big profit for that affidavit. And the real question should maybe be not how much but rather WHO paid her if in fact thats the case.

Are we now speculating that the mother in-law didn't see Jeremy take meth and that she was paid for making that statement, based on what info. At least the speculation on Jeremy is based on tests from Nascar. Perhaps she is simply telling the truth. :)

Perhaps. All we really know is someone on some side is obviously lying. We haven't seen Mayfield's response to this latest allegation yet, and Im sure he will have a different story . lol

NASCAR obviously expected Jeremy to just submit to their guilty until proven innocent "rehab' clause without a fight, and now will do anything to make themselves come out looking good.

In my opinion, you make a logical assumption. This is rapidly becoming more a case questioning the sanctioning body's credibility as much as it is Mayfield's alleged substance abuse. They accuse him of being a meth addict, he accuses them of being a poorly run professional sport with sloppy drug testing policies.

Mayfield, rightly or wrongly, can afford to lose this case. NASCAR can't.

But one thing is for certain. IF Mayfield is in fact still using any banned substance while this is ongoing, he is a damned idiot.

Remember Tim Richmond? Tim had enough $$$ to make a stand and prove a point. I hope the truth comes out.

:bsflag:

I don't believe this for a second. There is no way in hell he's that stupid. Until they do a hair test, I don't believe them.

One thing for sure SOMEONE is lying. If this is true Jeremy don't need to be on the track or the highway for that matter. If not he is probaly ruined anyway with all the aligations. I did see on NascarNow where his last employee has quit now saying that he probaly won't be racing anymore this year anyway.

The photos of Mayfield taken during his recent court appearances don't look anything like someone under the influence of Meth, especially for the duration and levels that NASCAR is alleging with their recent statements. someone with that level of addiction wouldn't even be functional, let alone put together a 'Cup race team and secure sponsorship. IMO NASCAR is just digging a deeper hole for themselves by trotting out this stepmother with her wild accusations.

True. Frankly, Jeremy looks like he has to much weight on him for the common meth head in my opinion. And they are as common as ticks on a hounds ass all over the rural south.

His complexion is a dead giveaway- if he was guilty as charged his face would be covered with crank blossoms.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Real meth addict below.

Plus if he has been using for 7 years something would of showed by now. And meth is not something you can just take everyonce in a while once you get hooked (and it just takes one time with meth) its HARD to get off of and just gets worse.

I personaly never have seen a photo of him since all this started, but i dont see why he would be fighting this deal this hard if he had used.

Mayfield Speaks

Mayfield came on NASCAR Radio's Late Shift program last night. Here is the link to the transcript. You can read and decide.

I do find it interesting that his chosen drug testing facilities are a Urgent Care Center and a hospital emergency room rather than a drug testing facility. It seems to me his argument may hold more weight.

Thanks for that link. Interesting big time.

Doesn't meth use play havoc with your teeth? JM's appear to be ok. Why don't they take hair samples? It can prove recent and long term drug abuse.

Yes, it affects teeth.

Here is Jeremy's latest counter:

Jeremy Mayfield didn't spare his stepmother or NASCAR in defending himself against Wednesday's report that he has again tested positive for methamphetamines.

NASCAR filed court papers on Wednesday saying that his most recent drug test came back positive and including an affidavit from Mayfield's stepmother Lisa who claims to have seen the racer using drugs on numerous occasions.

Mayfield said he does not trust NASCAR testing and saved his strongest words for his stepmother.

"She's basically a whore," he told ESPN.com's David Newton. "She shot and killed my dad."

Mayfield's father Terry died in 2007 at age 56 of what the Chapel Hill, N.C., medical examiner called a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Nevertheless, Mayfield told ESPN.com on Wednesday that his stepmother will be served with a wrongful death suit on Thursday.

"She knows what we've got on her," Mayfield said. "For her to come out and do this is pretty ballsy. Everybody that's ever known me knows I never, ever have been around her for more than 10 hours of my life. She's a gold digger. I knew that from Day 1."

Although he said he has no proof, Mayfield claimed that NASCAR paid Lisa Mayfield for her affidavit.

"It wouldn't take much money. She tried to get money from me," Mayfield said. "I have a very short fuse when it comes to her."

Mayfield said he has been tested for drugs every two to five days by an independent lab and never tested positive. He said it was no coincidence that the tests by NASCAR's lab resulted in his suspension and now another positive test. In blasting NASCAR, he went straight for the top, chairman Brian France.

"Brian France talking about effective drug programs is like having Al Capone talking about effective law enforcement," Mayfield said.

Mayfield, who was suspended in May for a violation of NASCAR's substance abuse policy, had been granted a temporary injunction against his suspension ... before this latest test. Now, he has no interest in getting back on the track and will instead concentrate on fighting these latest troubles.

"They're playing this high school [expletive], they better be ready," Mayfield said of NASCAR. "I'm coming after them in a big way. I'm prepared to go all the way and have the backing to do it if it takes everything I've got. I'm not going to back down for something I didn't do."

David Newton covers NASCAR for ESPN.com.
