Move the finale to Texas!

Here's a column I wrote for Popular Speed making the case for moving the championship race to Texas.

Flame away. :lol2:
Glad you got published but I'm not a fan of your idea at all. At the same time, I'm not a fan of moving the race to Vegas. Heck, I wasn't even in favor of Vegas getting a second date. If anything, NASCAR needs to move away from those types of tracks and hold races at venues that actually produce an exciting event.

Well done. I don't see why the finale needs to be at just one track every year. Though, like the Super Bowl, it does make sense to have it in warm weather markets. And I agree that a short track or plate race doesn't make too much sense (though the argument for a short track is intriguing). But that leaves a handful of nice options for venue if they decide to move it every year like the Super Bowl. Texas certainly jumps out as an appealing market, big venue, fast track.

Then build it by the beach :D

I mean, I love Rockingham, but Phoenix and Darlington fill the void nicely.

As for a race at the beach, we have Daytona and Miami. I'd personally love to see the Truck Series at Myrtle Beach Speedway, although I think Carteret County Speedway is a much better atmosphere for a beach destination race.

I'm still trying to figure out why the finale needs to be moved anywhere. Homestead is one of the few unique tracks on the schedule and it's not bad racing there. Short of holding the event on dirt, ratings aren't going to rise. There's no reason to go anywhere else outside of want. It's certainly not need.

The finale is not the problem with NASCAR. It's what it takes to get there. NASCAR's turned a blind eye to the real problems with this sport and in turn, fewer eyes are on the sport.

I have been going to Carteret County my whole life - my parents are both from there. I have never been to the speedway, I'm ashamed to admit. I'm going to commit right now to making sure I get there at my next chance. We will be in Morehead City for July 4th week - I need to check the track schedule.

They race on July 5th and July 8th.

That place is astonishingly beautiful. And it's just a few miles from the beach, so the weather's usually pretty nice.

Top four play elimination rounds of rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock.
Shhhh don't let the brain find out, he might implement it!!!! :)

Is the racing really that great at Homestead? Or does the championship drama make the racing great? I mean, if you watch the 2011 Homestead race and take the championship drama out of it, it wasn't that good..

I think the finale moving to Las Vegas is inevitable. Las Vegas is the new "Los Angeles". I'd rather see it in Texas, if it moves anywhere. Although, doing like they do in the NFL and alternating venues works for me. Homestead-Miami, Texas, Las Vegas, Phoenix and, just for fun, Darlington.

Isn't every other Vegas race a fuel mileage finish? I suppose they could use stage placement to try to change that.

I'm rather ambivalent about moving the finale around. I think overall, I'd rather have it at a set track --- doesn't matter to me
which track -- just pick one and that's it.

The Phoenix, and Dallas, area is too dull. A trip to Phoenix is about as much fun as a trip to grandmas retirement home when you're five. California and vegas have terrible tracks, but plenty of off track entertainment, and I've been informed that daytona is too much of a lottery, to hold a championship that is already a lottery. In the end, it just doesn't matter to me, I probably won't be watching anyways. The cup trophy currently holds the same value as the trophy of the track they decide to hold the final race at, meaning the value of a couple pounds of plastic and wood.

You cant run it in Michigan in November at least most of the time or you'll need snow tires, But California could do it. I like competition and these 1.5 milers aint getting it done. 2 milers are a step above, barely though.

I have to wonder if you have been watching Homestead racing with an open mind. IMO, Homestead produces great racing, among the best of the year. Fast and treacherous, a true test of driver skills. It is weighted down by the championship hoopla, as the finale will always be, but Homestead as a race track is a great venue.

If Nascar had raced at Homestead "back in the day" but then stopped going there 20 years ago, losing that track would be mourned like Rockingham is mourned. JMO.

makes a game 7 type finish more exciting.....I wont get into the Superspeedway skill discussion....

Until all four championship drivers are involved in a lap 17 "Big one". Or, even worse, three of the four cars are and the fourth just has to ride around for a few laps.

Heck, Homestead is a lottery. Just ask retired driver, Carl Edwards.

The guy who blocked the whole track and took himself out? What's that got to do with luck?

They could come up a crazy rule that the drivers in the 'ship can go to a back up car during race......

IDK what the rationale is for moving the season ender but if you wish it to be as dull as dishwater with more empty seats than full Fort Worth is the place to have it. Miami ticks all the boxes in terms of what the finale needs in that it is a small venue, should be warm enough as we know how temperature sensitive Nascar fans are and Florida is crawling with people in Nascar's demo so why move it?

Well, the completely unnecessary debris caution for tire smoke was pretty unlucky...

Since Texas hasn't followed the trend of ripping out seats, NASCAR probably doesn't want their finale at a track in which less than half the seats would be filled.

Maybe if they put this kind of seating in they could sell it out.

What if someone botches a restart and takes out all 4 at Homestead? What if all 4 drivers get caught cheating? What if someone wins more than a third of all the races, and the championship goes to the driver that gets 15th at homestead, because the three other cars had problems? What if Goodyear has another tire fiasco?

Nascar is asking for trouble with this current format regardless of where this race is held.

Yeah!

A whole (hole for our special friends) buncha people will say rude things and vow never to watch NASCAR again!

I like the idea of moving the races around that are a part of the Chase. It shouldn't be left to the same fans that get to see these races when others are left out.

I really think NASCAR is missing out by not letting tracks bid to host the final race. If the sport can get healthier again, I can see that happening. Not a good way to go now.

If all four cars are involved in the same wreck, the car that wrecked furthest down the track might win the championship because they would all be knocked out of the race due to the 5 minute rule.
