My oldest brother isn't expected to make it much longer

They said he is too unstable to move to hospice and now they say they need to talk today about whether or not to turn off the machines and when to do so if they decide to.

They are planning to unhook the respirator tomorrow morning. I didn't realize until the other day that he and his wife have been together since she was 14. They've been married 48 years and he's only 67 years old. They got married pretty much right out of high school and not long before he enlisted in the Marines and went to Vietnam. Even knowing what he is going through and knowing that he isn't going to get better, I can't imagine how hard it had to be for her to make the decision to just let him go.

Holy crap. Hate to hear stories like this, Ben1. Prayers to you and yours.
Find solace knowing his pain and struggle will be over and he'll be in a better place.
It is good to be with family at times like these.

BenOne, she can do it because she loves him. I had to make the decision to quit chemo for my husband, but I knew that continuing it would do no good.
It will be hard for her, but because she loves him, she can do it. There comes a point where further efforts are in vain. We don't like it, but that's the way it is.
She had his love and devotion for 48 years. That will sustain her.

My thoughts and prayers are with her and the family.

Very sorry.

Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and prayers. I can't imagine the level of incompetence required for this to happen, but they just told me that they couldn't unhook the respirator until tomorrow because the attending has to be there. It's not like "sorry, we can't mow your lawn until tomorrow" or something like that. This seems like kind of an important thing for them to be able to get right, especially since they decided on this several days ago.

He passed quickly and peacefully surrounded by his family just a few minutes after the vent was turned off a few minutes ago. Thanks again for your prayers, thoughts, concerns, and kind words of support.

This was my brother. He leaves a hole, but he also leaves a legacy and a family who loves and appreciates his toughness, his service and his many sacrifices made for others over a life well spent.

I don't know what to say Benevolent One, other than I know you are a music lover and we both know it can help the grieving process in times like this.

Sorry for your loss and I dedicate this song to you both .....

RIP, Jimmy
