Decent read.....

When racing’s attendance and TV ratings fell in recent years, NASCAR officials knew they needed a change.

After decades of growth under the iron rule of founder Bill France Sr. and his son Bill France Jr. – both enshrined in NASCAR’s Hall of Fame – current Chairman Brian France pushed his organization to listen more to the people who were the backbone of the sport.

Working with the team owners, drivers, tracks and sponsors, NASCAR came up with an “Industry Action Plan” that aims to help the sport rebound from the economic downturn and changing consumer habits that have affected all sports.

The goal? Inject more youth and diversity into a fan base that is mostly white and aging by ramping up digital and social media offerings, consider changes to the cars to make the racing more exciting, and even contemplate more radical moves.

Bring dodge back in. If other makes wanna bring it in go for it, we already got Toyota. Don't shorten races

PLEASE dont shorten races !!!!!!!!!! I wait all week for the next race and want it to last as long as possible. The young folks dont give a hoot about Nascar races from what I have seen. They have their cell phones and video games, oh and facebook. shorter races aint gonna help any more than Pastrana and Danica did.

But Andy, would Honda and Subaru be willing to spend the money to develop the car? I have no problem with them racing, but they
might not see any advantage in it.
Honda yes Suby I doubt they would go for it, they pulled out of Rally car and I think run a limited scca schedule. Honda would be a great addition to Nascar as well as Nisan.

I'm an old timer when it comes to Nascar and I'd like to see the races shortened to what the Nationwide runs and run both these races on the same day when they are at the same track. Races are way too long, I usually watch the first third and then the last 50 laps now, no point otherwise. Shortening the races would create more.... go for it mode... and I think the racing would be better.

I could see them shortening more races. They already shaved both Pocono races down from 500 miles to 400 miles. Long race distances like that meant more back when there was a lot of attrition due to mechanical failures. That isn't happening nearly as much anymore.

I see your point about the "go for it" part. Makes sense I guess.

Dear NASCAR: Please do not shorten races to accommodate those who do not care about this sport! Otherwise, those of us who care about NASCAR will get to watch less racing while no new fans come in just because you shortened races.

First thing should be to allow and encourage Honda and Subaru to join the sport. I don't care if it pisses off the rednecks.

That's why I say go to OHC engines. That's stock. Pushrods were done long ago, and now it's done simply to keep older fans happy. Go to a consumer based OHC block, along with a real street look, and new fans will feel the old magic of seeing 'their driver' racing 'their car' with 'their engine'.

Good job..more wi fi so they can do even more not paying attention to what is happening around them..for generation ADD-attention deficit disorder.
And this is more of a generational issue than a NASCAR issue. Even universities with major football programs are struggling to get their own students into games because of poor cellular reception and no or poor WiFi networks. Alabama and Georgia have two of the best college football programs in the country and 32% and 39%, respectively, of their student sections were unfilled over the last four years. If they can't text, tweet, or share photos on Instagram young people are a lot less likely to attend any sort of sporting event.

I think it's bull**** to say young people don't love cars. Young people don't love Ford and Chevy cars because they're pieces of ****. Honda and Toyota owners definitely love their cars because their cars take care of them. Subi owners are a different breed - it's a Subi world.

I care about this sport more than most do, I see no point in a 500 mile race, 250 miles is plenty.

Absolutely!

There was nothing wrong with the races years ago with only a few cars on the lead lap. There was no aero problem , and it was great racing . The best car actually won. Now everybody wants photo finishes and side by side beatin and bangin. Nascar can't make that happen any more than shorter races can make that happen . Seems to me , lower series like the trucks had short races , next series up (Nationwide) had longer races , more strategy and endurance . Then you moved up to cup with longer races still, harder and harder to win ,not using your stuff up too early ,etc. Stop with the changes.

yeah, I don't think that running 500 miles is selling people about cars being reliable anymore . It would change the face of Nascar if they shortened the races, more then most people think. They make a tire that can run almost a whole shortened race, at the most changing two tires, so it would take a lot of pit adjustments and pit strategy out of the race. Making any change is like making ripples on the water..I think our government has pretty much killed the backyard hot rodder. With all the pollution equipment required and some states like California have made it almost impossible to pass smog with a hot rod engine. My state has so many hoops to jump thru for a 16 year old to get a license(brought to you by the United insurance of America) that they are waiting until the are 18 or 19 when the restrictions are lifted. So kids today can only drool as a 40,000 buck Camaro loaded with all the electronic whiz bangs drives past. There is little to hot rod out there anymore, young hot rodders race what they can afford. I would have a different series for the OHV as a test market to see how it goes. I don't happen to think that throwing the baby out with the bath water is the way to go unless there was support for it. Young people are so flaky and they have the attention span of a gnat.

I wouldnt mind seeing some races shortened -- maybe one Dega and one Daytona by 50 miles, and a couple 1.5 miles by 50-100 miles.

I believe the attendance dose mean something to sponsors who may see it as a lack of interest in the sport.

Sponsors don't need to look at attendence . Just look at this board , most 'fans ' here hate Nascar.

As a ticket buyer to these events I say DO NOT SHORTEN THE RACES! It costs me a lot of money for the 1000+ mile round trips to these events. The last thing I want is less racing for my $'s.
That's why you have companion races on the same day, trucks, NW, Cup, hell all three.

500 miles races used to be about the car making it that far. Petty, with his top notch mechanics, averaged 8 dnf's due to mechanical failure for his entire career. Breaking down was part of the drama. It isn't anymore. I would like to see 2 250 milers each weekend run with the same car, and you get to keep the best result. The truck races are short, and those guys go at it the whole time.

I think running a 250-300 mile Cup race with 1 to 2 companion races on a Sunday would generate a lot of interest. I know when I go to a local track, if there are 3 or 4 different series running it makes for a great day or night of racing, the more variety the better, after all it is the spice of life....lol.

Speed Channel should show the last fifty laps on Monday so all you guys could tune into a fifty lap Nascar race . Leave the 500 miler on Sunday alone .
