Points Standing before Richmond

I was looking at the points and the statistics between Elliott and Bowman last night and I just cannot understand how there can be a points system where Elliott is #1 and Bowman is #4 with the way they have finished in races so far this season. Bowman leads Elliott in every category except laps lead. I guess it must be passing points or they are giving a bucket load of points for laps lead. I hope they are not giving extra points for most popular driver awards or best-looking cars. :(

It's always the stage points that are always in question when trying to make sense of the scoring and they are almost impossible to keep up with. That is one of the reasons I posted it. You can't go by wins and top 5's, 10's etc only. But we CAN tell some of the crying Chase fans to shut the hell up now.

Thanks, I figured it was stage points... but at least the 48 is in the playoffs again so far and seems to be on the right track performance wise.

Chase has been pretty good this year, just hasn't closed the deal yet. I will say we're getting pretty close to Larson time here, Bristol Dirt-Dover-Darlington-Kansas-Charlotte are where I believe he can really shine. Not enough people talking about how difficult these cars will be to race at Dover & Darlington, with no side force these things are going to drive like a damn wingless sprint car out there.

Even Richmond, with those long straights and tri-oval design is going to be significantly trickier than it's been in years

I don't know what GL stands for on the chart, but what it does is show how many positions a driver moved up, down or stayed the same for the race. Bowman gained 5 spots FWIW

Those tracks could give drivers like Larson, Bell, Bowman, and Elliott a little advantage.

Eh I have thought for years that the road courses are where some drivers have an advantage. Short tracks are a dime a dozen when drivers are coming up thru the ranks and almost all of them have tons of experience with short tracks. Case in point is A.J. on road courses, but just about the time I thought I had it figured out, Mr. where did he come from Elliott blew that theory all to hell.

I love when in NASCAR they describe a guy as a short track specialist...like that's 99% of them

Thats one of the reasons I said I don't understand how they can have such a points system. With this system Elliott is not ahead of Bowman because he has really done a better job of driving, or his car has outperformed the 48 team. It is because the 48 team had a few unlucky races where they got taken out in wrecks from just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The same thing happened last year. The points system has already been beaten to death, so it is what it is...I just wished it didn't hurt a team so much when they are taken out of a race for no fault of their own.

I mean at this point it don’t really matter who has the most points all season. If the playoffs started right now, then Bowman would be ahead of Chase because of the win, and that’s what matters.

What has made it not that great in your opinion?

Richmond just hasn't lived up to it's "action track" nickname lately. It's not bad by any means, just not as exciting as it once was. It seems like it has been a while since guys could run side by side here.

This is just one example off the top of my head. Start watching this video shortly after the 45 minute mark, and watch Dale and Rusty side by side for several laps.....

I'm not concerned that the 9 or the 48 team won't be in the playoffs. I was just using those two teams as an example because they are so close in points, and they are both the teams I root for, so I pay a little more attention to them. I would be very surprised if the 9 team doesn't have at least 1 win before the playoffs start.

They never say "well here comes your points leader" anymore, or so in so in second place blew up. So little emphasis on points now that I didn't know Elliott was leading the points and I bet most on here didn't know it either. That is why I posted it in the first place.

You just pointed out another reason why this is not a very good points system. ;)

RE: Points System.

Honestly I agree, NASCAR forgot about K.I.S.S. Hopefully with the NextGen cars actually producing good racing, the NASCAR executives will look at repealing some (if not all) these gimmicks that was put in place because of the poor performance of the Gen6 cars.

The time to do it would be when they negotiate the new contracts. This points system is a leftover from the "Brian" era. Who knows if it was his idea or the networks. It's just one more indicator that racing isn't stick n ball.

Points are incredibly simple...
I thought so until they started stopping the race at arbitrary times and awarding points. Then they threw in regular season points and playoff points. It's pretty confusing for a casual fan. Imagine giving the team leading a football 7 extra points for a game that will be played 3 months from now.........

I'll say this though, certain tracks are more tailored to some than others. Chase for instance might be the smoothest guy in the series when it comes to hard braking zones which is why he'll probably go down as the NASCAR road course GOAT, but also that serves him really well at a place like Martinsville where he always seems to be competitive.

Likewise, Bristol & Dover are great examples of where a stock car drives a bit like a 410 sprint. With that shape and high banking the lines with the speed carried through the corner it gets that rear end stepping out a lot like what you see at Eldora in a 410. Larson typically does really well at both

Some of my fellow Chase fans were really counting on him winning yesterday and they may be taking his loss a little hard to handle...so you may want to go a little easy on them for a couple of days. :)

Nope still simple playoff points aren't added until the playoffs for seeding. Fans overthink it and lack reading comprehension.

Actually if the playoffs started today, Chase would get the 15 playoff points awarded to the season points leader. Bowman would get 7 points for 4th place, so added to his current 6 points he would have a total of 13 playoff points. So the overall points standings do have some value and importance.

I’m going off this https://www.espn.com/racing/standings which has Bowman as the leader in points.
