NASCAR is in the home stretch of finalizing a new television deal with FOX for the first half of the Sprint Cup Series season.

According to a Sports Business Journal report, the network is willing to lock up a new package with NASCAR for 2014 and beyond. FOX has been a NASCAR partner since 2001 and will reportedly continue to televise the first half of the Sprint Cup Series campaign annually beginning with the Daytona 500.

It is expected the rights fees will at least be on par with the $220 million a year deal NASCAR currently has with FOX, as part of the total $2.74 billion agreement the sanctioning body has with FOX, TNT and ABC/ESPN through the end of the 2013 campaign.

Although FOX is willing to sign early, NASCAR is not expected to finalize the remainder of its rights fees until sometime next year.

The second half of the Sprint Cup Series season, the Nationwide Series schedule and the Camping World Truck Series slate are all up for grabs. New players NBC and CBS could be involved in the next round of negotiations.

NBC is the real loser in this if FOX gets the first half. The only sports worth watching on NBC are football and the Olympics. And then there's the calamity that is NBCSN.

I don't know. I figured FOX was gong to dump them when the new MLB contract was announced. Guess not.

Do the TV ratings fall off when the races are moved to satellite or cable broadcasts?

By cable, do you mean Fox vs ESPN vs TNT? If so yes. The ratings for the OTA network, FOX, are higher than ESPN & TNT almost weekly.

That is exactly what I meant. I know a lot of people who can't afford cable or satellite services.
That's always been my contention too. It has to be obvious that there are not as many people getting ESPN or TNT as there are OTA networks. NASCAR can't be blind to that. I guess though, they've got to deal with the networks that will pay. If the OTA networks don't want them then I guess they have little choice.

nascars TV deals are a mess, but the France family sure likes the money. These fragmented 'maximum dollar' deals do little to grow the sport.

Yep. I'm guessing FOX is going to use NASCAR to leverage the cable providers in to carrying Fuel TV. There's just no room for NASCAR on FOX with the new MLB contract.

I'd rather see FOX out altogether. Their coverage is horrendous.... almost, not quite, but almost as bad as TNT. I can't stand listening to Jaws.

Someone should get him a keyboard and a nifty skunk avatar. ;)

Jaws is the worst. Jarrett is a close second. I would like to see one network cover all the races so they can do it right. We're missing so much each week.

I'm guessing when SPEED becomes Fox Sports 1, some of the MLB games and maybe even some NASCAR races could go there.

I don't see CBS being a player at all. The have the NFL on Sundays, no room for NASCAR unless all NASCAR races after Labor Day are moved to Saturday nights, which would require a schedule shuffling since Dover, Martinsville, and Talladega do not have lights.

FOX used to do such a good job. Now, it's unwatchable crap.

I just wish they could combine TNT's pre-race coverage with ESPN's race coverage. FOX, I don't know what happened to them..... pure crap. The pre-race shows on FOX and ESPN/ABC are useless. Same goes for RaceDay.

No one will ever be completely happy with NASCAR television coverage. It's one of those sports that just does not transfer well to TV (for several reasons). If not for Hotpass and Trackpass Scanner I'd DVR every race and fast forward through the commercials and cautions.

I personally like having three or four networks covering NASCAR. The sport needs some new blood in the television department though. NBCSN does such a great job with the IndyCar Series, that's why I hope they come back to NASCAR.

???????? I'm confused???????

I enjoyed Fox's coverage until MW arrived. The 2 brothers are too much. I think they have the best camera work to. They all have commercials and about the same amount. If there has to be multiples though I'd like NBC to have a shot. I don't enjoy TNT's or ESPN's coverage.

I am upset with the Canadian coverage. TSN had promised to carry all the races, yet they have allocated many of the ESPN/TNT races to TSN2 so that they could cover golf, football, etc on TSN1. I unfortunately do not get TSN2 although my parents do...looks like Ill be heading to their place this Sunday to watch Talladega.

Last weekend I saw that ESPN was broadcasting the race from somewhere on their website. Maybe that's an option for you?

I will check that out, thanks for the tip. However if it is like NBC, ABC, etc, most of the content gets filtered from Canadian's even on their website (they track our IP's and give us a message saying "Sorry this isn't available in your region").

you could use a proxy that lets you choose IP based on region or country.

I wish I had a sweet app on my TV that let me choose what cameras I want to watch.

TNT is famous for showing something that doesn't matter at all, listening to a couple of odd jobs in the booth rattle on, and then they cut to the shot where the leader gets passed after a 3 lap battle that I watched on HOTPASS.

On SiriusXM Radio this morning they are talking about there be online streaming content of the races next year. They are saying that all races that fox airs will also be available on their website. That sounds cool.

Here's a bit of info about my personal experience of online and cell phone app viewing of NASCAR races. It will be three weeks this Saturday since I switched from DirecTV to Dish Network. Through Dish Network I purchased something called a Sling Adapter for $49. It was a one time fee that works with their version of a DVR called a Hopper. The Sling adapter allows me to view any of the live or recorded television from my own home over the net on a computer or on my smartphone. This allows me to watch the race live or recorded anywhere that I am at. It's very cool. DirecTV may have a similar product that they sell but I am not sure. I do know that there is something called the Slingbox that does the same thing as the adapter that I have. I'm not sure of the price but it may be an option for some of you out there.

From Jayski's article on the fox tv rights negotiations.

CBS or perhaps niche outlets like "The History Channel" might also dip their toes into the negotiations.(CBS Sports)(10-3-2012)

Be watching races on oprah winfrey network next DP.

I could see CBS making a play for the NNS series, Trucks, or the "Summer Season" that TNT currently has. CBS wants to build their CBS Sports Network. They could make a deal to have the Summer Season of Cup which will show on the CBS mother network, and they the NNS or Trucks which would air on their sports channel. The exact same can be said for NBC and their Sports channel.

Why the hell would History need NASCAR? Or is it just an excuse to have Larry the Cable Guy, Rutledge, and Chumlee in the booth?
